PHNOM PENH: The Military Attaché Corps Phnom Penh (MACPP), which comprises fourteen participants from nine countries, visited conflict-affected areas in Cambodia's Banteay Ampil district on Sunday (Aug 10) to inspect the situation on the ground, following Cambodia's implementation the ceasefire.
'This mission stemmed from the outcomes of the Special Meeting held on July 28, 2025, in Putrajaya, Malaysia and the Extraordinary Meeting of the Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee (GBC), which was concluded on August 7 and reaffirmed the full implementation of the ceasefire agreement of July 28, 2025, in Putrajaya,' said the Ministry of National Defence.
On Sunday August 10, the delegation inspected Thmar Doun Village in Kok Mon commune, where residents reported property destruction and lingering safety concerns.
According to Heng Ratana, director-general of the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC), an MK-84 bomb was discovered in the village — the scene of heavy aerial bombardment by the Thai air force during the recent clashes.
They also observed heavy damage at Ta Moan Sen Chey Primary School and Ta Moan Senchey Pagoda, which occurred Thai attacks that took place from July 24 to 28.
In addition, the attachés toured the Wat Phnom Thmar Kambor refugee site in Samroang town, where displaced families are sheltering.
The visit aimed to give them a first-hand understanding of the humanitarian situation and the needs of affected communities.
The delegation included representatives from Australia, Canada, China, France, Japan, Korea, Laos, the UK and Vietnam, underscoring international attention to the border tensions and their humanitarian impact. - The Phnom Penh Post/ANN

Thailand says another soldier injured by landmine near Cambodia

BANGKOK: A Thai soldier was injured by a landmine near the Cambodian border on Tuesday, the Thai army said, days after the Southeast Asian neighbours agreed to a ceasefire following last month's deadly five-day conflict. The soldier's left ankle was severely injured when he stepped on the mine while patrolling along a routine border route about 1 km (half a mile) from Ta Moan Thom temple in Thailand's Surin province, the army said in a statement. The soldier is being treated in hospital, it said. The incident is clear evidence that Cambodia has violated the ceasefire as well as international agreements such as the Ottawa Convention against landmines, Thai army spokesman Major-General Winthai Suvaree said in the statement. Cambodia continues to covertly plant landmines, while the Thai army has consistently adhered to peaceful approaches and has not been the initiating party, the statement said. "Should circumstances become compelling, it may be necessary to exercise the right of self-defence under international law principles to resolve situations that cause Thailand to continuously lose personnel due to violations of ceasefire agreements and sovereignty encroachments by Cambodian military forces," the army said. Cambodia rejected the Thai charges. It was the fourth time in a few weeks that Thai soldiers have been injured by mines during patrols along the border. On Saturday, three soldiers were injured by a landmine in an area between Thailand's Sisaket and Cambodia's Preah Vihear provinces. Two earlier incidents led to the downgrading of diplomatic relations and triggered the clashes. Bangkok has accused Cambodia of planting landmines on the Thai side of the disputed border that injured soldiers on July 16 and July 23. Thailand and Cambodia have bickered for decades over undemarcated points along their 817 km (508-mile) land border, with ownership of the ancient Hindu temples Ta Moan Thom and the 11th-century Preah Vihear central to the disputes. The latest clashes that started on July 24 were the worst fighting between the countries in more than a decade, and involved exchanges of artillery fire and jet fighter sorties that killed at least 43 and left over 300,000 people displaced on both sides. The fragile ceasefire has been holding since Thailand and Cambodia agreed last week to allow observers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to inspect disputed border areas, ensuring that hostilities do not resume.

Malaysia-led team investigating transparency of Thailand-Cambodia ceasefire

GEMAS: The Malaysia-led Interim Observer Team (IOT) plays a key role in investigating the transparency of the ceasefire along the Thailand-Cambodia border, said armed forces chief Gen Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar. "We have received reports from both countries of several ceasefire violations. "The team on the ground will investigate these main aim is to ensure that the ceasefire is implemented transparently and runs smoothly. "We have also requested Thailand and Cambodia to liaise with the Joint Action Group from both countries, including the legal section and others," he told reporters after witnessing the 2025 Firepower Training at Syed Sirajuddin Camp here today. Also present were Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari and Chief of Army Gen Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan. Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to strictly observe a ceasefire along their shared border, with both sides maintaining current troop positions while also refraining from any further reinforcements. According to the Agreed Minutes of the Extraordinary General Border Committee (GBC) Meeting issued after the Extraordinary GBC Meeting on Aug 7, both sides must avoid unprovoked firing towards the other side's positions or troops, which may escalate tensions. Meanwhile, Mohd Nizam said the IOT is currently holding meetings with Thailand and Cambodia at least twice a week to monitor and report on the latest developments in the area concerned. He said Malaysia is always ready to send representatives at the next stage after the IOT, namely the Asean Defence Attaché Observer Team (AOT), to both countries. – Bernama

US Ambassador urges Thailand and Cambodia to uphold ceasefire

US Ambassador to Malaysia, Edgard D. Kagan ( pic ), has called on Thailand and Cambodia to refrain from provocative actions or statements that could jeopardize the ceasefire between the two nations. This appeal follows a recent incident near the Cambodian border where a Thai soldier was injured by a landmine. Thailand has accused Cambodia of planting the device, an accusation that Cambodia denies. "We obviously condemn actions by either side that call into question the ceasefire, that violate the ceasefire," Kagan stated during the US Independence Day reception held at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur. He emphasized the importance of both countries taking appropriate steps to ensure their military and civilian personnel are committed to enforcing the ceasefire. "I don't want to take a position on who's responsible. But we definitely call on both countries to take all appropriate steps to ensure that their military and civilian personnel are doing everything possible to enforce the ceasefire," he said. Kagan highlighted the necessity for both sides to fully implement the ceasefire and suggested that some form of monitoring could help maintain confidence between the two nations amid rising tensions. The reception was held to celebrate the 249th anniversary of US independence on July 4 this year.
