ED deputy director Chintan Raghuvanshi walks out of Bhubaneswar jail on bail
The HC also granted bail to Chintan's associate Bhakti Binod Behera, from whose vehicle the CBI sleuths had recovered the bribe money.
Justice Gourishankar Satapathy allowed their separate bail pleas through a common order, imposing stringent conditions.
Raghuvanshi and Behera were arrested from two locations in Bhubaneswar after the CBI caught them red-handed while accepting bribe from a city-based mining businessman.
According to the agency, Raghuvanshi had placed a bribe demand of Rs 5 crore, which was reduced to Rs 2 crore and Rs 20 lakh was received as an installment.
Raghuvanshi had reportedly demanded the amount from the businessman with a promise not to arrest him or attach his property in the 12 cases of financial irregularities pending against him with the ED.
Earlier this month, Raghuvanshi was granted an interim bail for 10 days by the HC to visit his ailing wife and their newborn. He returned to jail as soon as his interim protection was over.
'The IRS officer was released from the jail on Friday evening after relevant documents from the HC and lower court were produced to the jail authorities", his lawyer Lalitendu Mishra said.
Besides Mishra, senior advocates Ashok Kumar Parija and Soura Chandra Mohapatra also represented Raghuvanshi.
Observing that the investigation has made significant progress and that the trial is unlikely to commence soon, the HC stated that bail is the rule and jail is the exception.
'The bail applications of Raghuvanshi and Behera are allowed and both are allowed on furnishing bail bonds of Rs 1 lakh with two solvent sureties for the like amount to the satisfaction of the trial court," the HC said.
The other conditions include that the petitioners shall not commit any offence while out on bail, shall remain present in the trial court during hearings, and shall not leave the country without prior permission of the trial court. They are also required to provide the address of their place of stay and surrender their passports before the court. PTI COR AAM AAM MNB

Remove Ads The Maharashtra government aims to create one crore " lakhpati didis " in the state as part of its women empowerment efforts, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Saturday."Lakhpati didi" is a term coined by the Union government for a self-help group (SHG) member who earns an annual household income of Rs 1 lakh or more. This income is calculated for at least four agricultural seasons and/or business cycles, with an average monthly income exceeding Rs 10,000."Last year, we created 25 lakh lakhpati didis. This year, we want to add another 25 lakh. Our target is to make one crore lakhpati didis in Maharashtra. The Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana is part of this push. Some people tried to create confusion by claiming the scheme will be stopped. We won't shut it. Instead, we will increase aid at the right time," the CM Ladki Bahin Yojana is the state government's flagship scheme under which women beneficiaries get Rs 1500 as monthly aid provided they fulfil some conditions like limits to annual household income etc."Some people have misused the scheme. For example, men uploaded photos of motorbikes on the portal to claim benefits. We are removing such names from the beneficiaries' list," Fadnavi has the highest number of SHGs in the country, and malls will be set up in 10 districts where products made by them will be sold, the CM informed."We have increased funding and revolving funds. Women have a much higher rate of loan repayment compared to men. Police 'assault' RG Kar victim's mother, lathicharge protesters in Bengal
The mother of a trainee doctor, who was raped and murdered at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital a year ago, on Saturday accused the Bengal police of assaulting her while she was on her way to join a protest marking one year of the crime. Police also carried out a lathicharge on demonstrators, leaving over 100 people injured, according to the report by news agency PTI. Her bangle was broken and she also sustained a head injury during the scuffle. The victim's father said that despite permission from the court for a peaceful rally, Kolkata police tried to prevent the family from reaching Dorina Crossing to join the march. According to the report, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, BJP leader Agnimitra Paul, and several BJP MLAs staged a sit-in at the Park Street, alleging that over 100 protesters, including senior party leaders, were injured in the police action. Rally demanded Mamata's resignation The Mamata Banerjee administration is fearing this massive crowd which has gathered in protest, said Adhikari. She will pay dearly for this as the protest is only going to get bigger from here, he warned.
