Odisha govt forms panel to probe deaths in govt medical college after ‘wrong injection'
In Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital in Koraput district, five patients suffering from different ailments - cancer and liver disease - passed away in quick succession on Tuesday night during treatment in ICU and surgery ward.
The deceased included a cancer patient, an accident victim, and three individuals who were admitted following a stabbing incident. On Wednesday morning, one more patient passed away.
'We admitted the patient on Tuesday afternoon for treatment. After the operation, the hospital authorities told us that the patient would be kept in the ICU for intensive care. Our patient, who was recovering till then, died after the nurse administered a wrong injection,' alleged a relative of Bhagaban Parija, one of the deceased.

Santosh Mishra, director medical education and training, said a five-member team has been formed to probe into the allegations of 'wrong injection'.
'Though medical negligence has not been established so far, the team would find out whether there were any adverse complications due to the administration of the injection,' he said.
According to people aware of the developments in the hospital, patients were given a Norepinephrine injection to arrest falling blood pressure.
Koraput medical college superintendent Susant Sahu said four patients died in the surgery ICU and another in the surgery ward.
'One among the ICU patients was suffering from cervical cancer and was in the fourth stage. Three others had severe abdomen injuries because of stabbing, and one had serious liver issues. Another patient had severe head injuries because of a road accident. There is nothing unusual in these deaths,' said Dr Sahu.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, on Sunday, asserted that his government has prioritised qualitative growth in the healthcare and education sectors since assuming power in the state, government officials. CM Majhi made the statement during the inauguration of a 650-bedded facility, built at a cost of Rs 280 crore, at the Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital (SLNMCH) in Koraput district. He also assured that all the vacant healthcare professionals posts at the SLNMCH will be filled soon. In his speech during the event, CM Majhi also said that the state government is taking all the measures to ensure that the residents of Koraput district don't require to visit far off places for healthcare services and face any hardships. He also claimed that people from Koraput and districts like Malkangiri, Rayagada in Odisha and areas in neighbouring states Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh will get benefited by the medical college. The Chief Minister added that the people will get all the advanced treatment facilities at the newly constructed 650-bedded hospital inaugurated on Sunday. CM Majhi said that along with all the advanced diagnosis facilities the medical college will also have a special oxygen plant so that critical patients don't face the shortage of oxygen. The state government has sanctioned Rs 41.15 crore for the construction of an advanced cancer hospital on the land measuring 2 acre adjacent to the SLNMCH in Koraput, he added. CM Majhi highlighted the achievements of his government, the state and Koraput in particular, under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana and Gopabandhu Jana Arogya Yojana. He said that within just a one-year period in government, significant progress has been made across all sectors. "These efforts will be further accelerated in the coming days. Ours is a government of the people. Our government is putting efforts to create a 'Samruddha Odisha' by 2036 and make Odisha a leading state in a developed India by 2047. New era has begun in the entire state of Odisha in the fields of education, healthcare, agriculture, industry, creation of new employment opportunities, sustainable economic development, etc. Koraput district has been included in all these," CM Majhi added.

Six die within hours in Koraput medical college, government orders probe
JEYPORE/BHUBANESWAR: At least six patients of Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital (SLN MCH) in Koraput perished in a span of hours late on Tuesday, prompting the state government to order an inquiry after kin of the deceased brought up allegations of medical negligence. Sources said five patients, aged 27 to 45, suffering from cancer, stab and head injuries, died during treatment on Tuesday night while another died on Wednesday morning. Four of the five were admitted to the ICU of surgery department and the remaining two were in the wards. Family members of the patients admitted to the ICU alleged that they developed serious complications minutes after a nursing staff administered an injection and died in a quick succession. The deceased were identified as Sukra Majhi (Semiliguda), Rukmi Penthia (Ambaguda), Phulamati Majhi (Kalahandi), Bhagaban Paraja and Jagannath Pujari (Borigumma) besides Bati Khara (Koraput). The deceased included a road accident victim, a cancer patient and two liver patients, besides two others, who were admitted following a stabbing incident. Sources said the ICU patients were administered Norepinephrine injection, which usually helps stabilise blood pressure. 'My brother died nearly 15 minutes after he was administered the injection,' alleged Jagannath's brother.
