Yahoo18-03-2025
A 6-year-old Texas boy has died after he was involved in an ATV crash on an Illinois sidewalk, authorities said.
The boy was driving a REX110 ATV on the sidewalk on Mission Boulevard in Joliet on Friday, March 15 when he 'lost control and struck a tree,' causing him to be 'ejected from the vehicle,' according to a news release shared by the Joliet Police Department.
Police Chief Bill Evans said the child was transported to St. Joseph Medical Center, 'where he was unfortunately later pronounced deceased.'
Family identified the child as Jason Alvarado, who was visiting his father in Illinois for spring break when the incident occurred, according to CW affiliate WGN-TV.

Lucero Quezada, the boy's grandmother, said her grandson was 'the most sweet boy I know.'
"He was the best kid in the world," Quezada said, NBC affiliate WMAQ-TV reported. She added, "He was an angel. He came to us to make everybody happy. And he was very lovely, always happy."
An 8-year-old boy who was a passenger on the ATV was not injured, according to Evans.
The police chief said neither the 6-year-old nor the 8-year-old were wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, according to WGN-TV and WMAQ.
The ATV involved in the crash was designed for children and could go up to 20 mph, he said, according to the reports, noting, 'I wouldn't advise just putting a youngster on it.'

In the news release shared by police, Evans said, 'There are no words that can fully capture the sorrow of losing a child. Our hearts are broken for the family, whose unimaginable grief is shared by our officers and the entire Joliet community.'
He later added, 'May this child's memory be a blessing, and may we all take a moment to remember those most deeply affected by this tragedy.'

Islam was the first to be struck inside the lobby, where the suspect shot several other people before heading to the elevator. On the 33rd floor, the suspect shot another person and then himself. Islam, 36, was a three-and-a-half-year veteran of the department and an immigrant from Bangladesh. During his funeral at a Bronx mosque three days later, New York's police commissioner promoted Islam to detective, as thousands of officers and mourners lined the streets. Since the deadly shooting, two online fundraisers on behalf of Islam's family have raised nearly $500,000 to help care for Islam's wife and three sons. A GoFundMe has raised nearly $80,000, while another fundraiser by several law enforcement and NYPD organizations has received more than $416,000. "I know how special Arham's birth is for this family that is still dealing with heartbreak after losing their hero," Adams said in a post on X. "Rest in peace, Det. Islam. Your legacy lives on in your beautiful family."

Maine police officer arrested by ICE agrees to voluntarily leave the U.S.

OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Maine — A Maine police officer arrested by immigration authorities has agreed to voluntarily leave the country, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Monday. ICE arrested Old Orchard Beach Police Department reserve Officer Jon Luke Evans, of Jamaica, on July 25, as part of the agency's effort to step up immigration enforcement. Officials with the town and police department have said federal authorities previously told them Evans was legally authorized to work in the U.S. An ICE representative reached by telephone told The Associated Press on Monday that a judge has granted voluntary departure for Evans and that he could leave as soon as that day. The representative did not provide other details about Evans' case. Evans' arrest touched off a dispute between Old Orchard Beach officials and ICE. Police Chief Elise Chard has said the department was notified by federal officials that Evans was legally permitted to work in the country, and that the town submitted information via the Department of Homeland Security's E-Verify program prior to Evans' employment. Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin then accused the town of "reckless reliance" on the department's E-Verify program. E-Verify is an online system that allows employers to check if potential employees can work legally in the U.S. The town is aware of reports that Evans plans to leave the country voluntarily, Chard said Monday. "The town reiterates its ongoing commitment to meeting all state and federal laws regarding employment," Chard said in a statement. "We will continue to rely on the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification form and the E-Verify database to confirm employment eligibility." ICE's detainee lookup website said Monday that Evans was being held at the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility in Central Falls, Rhode Island. However, a representative for Wyatt said Evans had been transferred to an ICE facility in Burlington, Massachusetts. ICE officials did not respond to requests for comment on the discrepancy. It was unclear if Evans was represented by an attorney, and a message left for him at the detention facility was not returned. ICE officials said in July that Evans overstayed his visa and unlawfully attempted to purchase a firearm. WMTW-TV reported Monday that Evans' agreement to a voluntary departure means he will be allowed to leave the U.S. at his own expense to avoid being deported.

Small West Lothian town rally together to save Galaday after vandals strike

A small West Lothian town have come together to save their local Galaday after thoughtless youth vandals caused thousands in damage. Residents of Armadale were devastated when several rented items were damaged by a handful of youths at the Galaday in June 2025. Fears were raised that next year's big celebration would be hampered when the committee for the event found out their insurance could not cover the damage. Brenda Spalding, a member of the Armadale Galaday committee, said: "The Galaday committee and community in Armadale were deeply disappointed that a few youths caused so much damage to rented property during our Galaday week. "The damage was assessed at a total cost of around £3000, although we have insurance it sadly wouldn't cover acts of vandalism. "To ensure the children next year weren't disadvantaged, this year's crowner set up a fundraising page which has now surpassed the £3000 we needed. "The whole committee have been overwhelmed by the financial support our brilliant community in Armadale have given. "This shows true community spirit and that the acts of a few won't deter the Galaday.
