AMD's press conference won Computex 2025

Of all the chipmakers at Computex, AMD had the most announcements for consumers and enthusiasts. But don't get too excited — Qualcomm, Intel, and Nvidia set a low bar.
AMD's Jack Huynh, SVP and GM of Computing and Graphics, hosted the company's Computex press conference.
While AMD's conference was held off-site, it just may have been the most interesting speech of the show.
Huynh kicked off with gaming announcements, unveiling the Radeon RX 9060 GPU, new Ryzen AI Pro processors, and improvements to its FSR ("FidelityFX Super Resolution") upscaling and frame generation technology.
So, what's new from AMD this summer?
To set the stage for Redstone, Huynh recapped the success of the Project Amethyst partnership with Sony to improve FSR into the fourth iteration.
FSR 4 was released earlier this year with the RDNA 4 Radeon RX 9070 GPUs and will be improved with FSR Redstone when it is released later this year. It is also currently supported in 60 games, with more to come.
FSR Redstone will be available on all RDNA 4 GPUs, and at launch, 40 games will support Redstone super sampling. Redstone brings machine learning enhancements like advanced radiance caching, machine learning ray regeneration, and machine learning frame generation.
These advanced features will become available as an update to AMD's FSR 4 super sampling software later this year.
AMD's more budget-friendly Radeon RX 9060 XT GPU features RDNA 4 architecture and offers all the advantages of FSR 4 for just $349 for the 16GB model, and $299 for the 8GB variant.
If you're hoping to get your hands on the latest AMD graphics card, the Radeon RX 9060 XT will go on sale on June 5, 2025.
While the Radeon RX 9060 XT is a less powerful GPU than the Radeon RX 9070 and 9070 XT, it gets all the same benefits of FSR 4, including frame generation and the upcoming Redstone improvements.
Huynh recapped the Ryzen AI 300 series' successes, though some of AMD's claims are a bit suspect.
AMD claims the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 is 15% faster than Apple's M4 Pro 12-core CPU. Based on our own testing, this is true on the Geekbench 6 multicore benchmark, but the M4 Pro wins in more real-world benchmarks, like the PugetBench for Adobe suite.
As for new announcements in this segment, AMD has brought the power of the new Ryzen AI Pro 300 chipsets with new devices by Asus.
'If you're a fan of AMD technology,' Huynh enthused, 'you're a fan of Asus innovation.'
Asus is expanding the ExpertBook P-series lineup to include AMD CPUs on desktops, mini-PCs, and laptops. It is also offering monitors with Free-Sync compatibility.
While AMD's workstation Threadripper Pro 7000 series CPUs are relatively unmatched in terms of raw computing power, the company is upgrading the chip to a new generation on the 4-nanometer Zen 5 architecture.
With up to 96 cores and 192 threads, the Threadripper 9000 series is the ultimate chip for those who believe 'bigger is better.'
While Apple's Ultra processors and Intel's Xeon line are in a similar class, neither company has gone as heavily into the over-spec segment as AMD's Threadripper lineup. Of course, there are often diminishing returns by adding so many additional cores and threads, which is why Intel ditched hyperthreading on the Arrow Lake platform.
However, there will always be exceptions. And that's the Threadripper gamble.
Previous iterations of the chip have often proved AMD correct in the benchmark stakes, as the Threadripper 7980 outperforms even the Epyc 7773X data center CPU in Cinebench 2024. So if you want the most powerful workstation chip to power your special effects business, like AMD partner WetaFX, the Threadripper 9000 Series is worth the excitement.
And if you need more endorsement than the facts, WetaFX's Daniel Seah told James Cameron 'who is like a god,' that he couldn't meet to talk about the next Avatar film because 'I have to go to Taipei for AMD.'
AMD also announced the Radeon AI Pro 9700 GPU to further support the desktop workstation ecosystem.
AMD has also announced ROCm support for the Radeon RX 9000 series and AMD Ryzen AI Max APUs, with support for additional hardware and Linux operating systems like RedHat coming later this year.
ROCm is also expanding Windows support to Pytorch and ONNX-EP.
AMD announced the most new chips and software support at Computex, thanks to its expanded gaming, professional, and workstation lineup.

Taiwan places export controls on Huawei and SMIC
In Brief Chinese companies Huawei and SMIC may have a difficult time accessing resources needed to build AI chips, due to Taiwanese export controls. Bloomberg reports that Taiwan's International Trade Administration placed the two companies and their subsidiaries on an updated list of entities designated as strategic high-tech commodities. That means Taiwanese businesses will need government approval before they can ship anything to either company. As a result, Huawei and SMIC will lose access to Taiwan's plant construction technologies, materials, and equipment, potentially setting back China's efforts to develop new AI semiconductors, Bloomberg says. 'On June 10, we added some 601 entities from Russia, Pakistan, Iran, Myanmar and mainland China including Huawei and SMIC to the entity list to combat arms proliferation and address other national security concerns,' the trade administration said in a statement.

Counterfeit Bitdefender Website Snares Victims

Making this story even more disturbing is that the malware used as a part of this scam is readily available for sale on the Dark Web, that part of the internet where criminals buy and sell goods and services. The internet has three distinct layers. The first is the Surface Web, where most people do searches using their standard browsers, such as Google Chrome. The second is the Deep Web, which is not indexed in standard search engines and is accessed by logging in directly to a site; it often requires authentication for access. Online banking and accessing your medical records are two examples of the use of the Deep Web. Finally, there is the Dark Web, which is only accessible through specific browsers, most commonly Tor, which encrypts all traffic and allows users to remain anonymous. Cybercrime-as-a-service (CaaS) is the business model for cybercriminal geniuses who create and provide services for creating phony or counterfeit websites, malware and delivery systems on Dark Web sites It is on these criminal Dark Web sites where criminals sell or lease all kinds of malware, including ransomware. Other things sold on the Dark Web include login credentials to bank accounts and personal information stolen through data breaches. These Dark Web sites look amazingly like regular retail websites. They have ratings and reviews, tech support, software updates, sales and loyalty programs. Many also offer money laundering services as well. Thus even relatively unsophisticated cybercriminals can access the latest tools to commit their crimes. Creating a counterfeit, but legitimate appearing website such as occurred with the counterfeit Bitdefender site is only the first step to accomplishing the criminal's goal. Next, victims must be steered to the website. The sophisticated cybercriminals who design these counterfeit websites are also adept at manipulating the algorithms that determine a high position in a search engine search. They do this in several ways including stuffing their sites with keywords making the site appear more relevant to the algorithms the search engines use to determine placement in a search engine search. In other instances, the criminals merely pay the search engine to have their counterfeit website appear high in a search engine search. Payment for a high position in a search engine search is a profitable advertising tactic for search engines. So how do you protect yourself from these phony and counterfeit websites that, particularly in the era of AI, appear to be so legitimate? First of all, this scam points out the importance of having dual factor authentication on all of your important accounts so that even if someone managed to steal your username and password, when you provided it to the counterfeit website they would be unable to access your account with the real company. Trust me, you can't trust anyone. It is more important than ever when you go online to make sure that you are on the legitimate websites you seek rather than a criminal's counterfeit website. If you know the URL of a website, make sure you type the URL in carefully to avoid going to a criminals' website. You can also confirm a website's legitimacy by going to to see who actually owns the website and how long it has been in existence. The Google Transparency Report will also help indicate whether a website is legitimate or not. Another very good tool is which is a free online service where you provide the URL of the website you are checking on and virustotal will send the file to dozens of antivirus companies including Bitdefender to see if it is legitimate. . Also Google Chrome has its AI powered Enhanced Safe Browsing feature which will allow you to check on the legitimacy of a particular URL and will warn you if it is a scam.

Researchers make breakthrough that could change electric vehicles forever: 'This technology overcomes the shortcomings'
A team of researchers has developed a high-performance supercapacitor that overcomes the traditional limitations of energy density through the use of carbon nanotubes and conductive polymers. Supercapacitors have the ability to charge and deliver large amounts of energy quickly, and they are resilient enough to survive millions of charge and discharge cycles without much degradation. However, they have less energy density than conventional batteries, which means they're not useful over long periods of time without recharging. This has limited their use in practical applications, such as electric vehicles and drones, according to the National Research Council of Science and Technology in a report shared by TechXplore. Scott Donne, a supercapacitor and battery material researcher at the University of Newcastle in Australia, clarified where supercapacitors stand in comparison to other technologies. "You've got capacitors with high power but low energy; fuel cells with high energy but low power; and batteries sitting in the middle — which is why they are the most popular of the three," Donne told Chemistry World. Now, researchers led by Dr. Bon-Cheol Ku and Dr. Seo Gyun Kim of the Carbon Composite Materials Research Center at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology and Professor Yuanzhe Piao of Seoul National University have discovered a way to improve the energy density and power delivery of supercapacitors through the use of new materials. The combination of highly conductive single-walled carbon nanotubes and polyaniline polymer created a sophisticated fiber structure that lets their new supercapacitor store more energy while being able to release it at a faster rate, the report explained. "This technology overcomes the shortcomings of supercapacitors by using single-walled carbon nanotubes and conductive polymers," said Dr. Bon-Cheol Ku. Tests have shown that it maintains stable performance, even after 100,000 charge and discharge cycles, and that it's durable enough to function in high-voltage applications. This opens up the possibility for use in electric vehicles, where it could replace or complement existing lithium-ion batteries. The technology provides efficient power delivery along with fast charging capabilities that could improve overall EV range and performance. These composite fiber structures of the CNT-PANI design also provide high mechanical flexibility, which means they could be rolled and folded, according to the report. In the study, published in the journal Composites Part B: Engineering and shared by ScienceDirect, data showed that the cells maintained 100% retention, even after being folded 180 degrees. This resilience has helped the researchers create thin film-like structures, which could further expand supercapacitor use in next-generation electronics, such as wearables. The addition of low-cost polymers has also helped them lower production costs and create a plan for mass production across a variety of applications, paving the way for commercialization. "We will continue to develop and industrialize ultra-high-performance carbon fibers based on carbon nanotubes," said Dr. Bon-Cheol Ku.
