Exemplary Dembele steps up again to inspire depleted PSG
Dembele found the back of the net six minutes into added time after being superbly set up by Achraf Hakimi and the French forward also shone defensively by pressing relentlessly and initiating the move that led to his decisive goal.
"I'd give the Ballon d'Or to Mr Ousmane Dembele," coach Luis Enrique said after PSG's Champions League final win over Inter Milan. "The way he defended...only that can be worth the Ballon d'Or. This is how you lead a team."
Dembele proved his coach right once again against Bayern.
Rested for the group stage after sustaining a thigh injury and only coming off the bench after halftime in the last 16 and in the quarter-final, Dembele brought an incredible energy to a team who had been dominated by Bayern.

"It's an important period for us. We had a score to settle with Bayern after the 2020 (Champions League) final (won by Bayern 1-0) and after they beat us earlier this season," captain Marquinhos said. "We want to win this competition."
PSG went ahead through Desire Doue, his first goal in the tournament.
"I try to help the team by scoring, but also with my efforts, notably defensively," Doue said.
PSG, seeking a quadruple of titles after winning the Champions League, French Cup and the Ligue 1 title, will face Borussia Dortmund or Real Madrid for a place in the final.
They will be without centre back Willian Pacho and defender Lucas Hernandez, who picked up straight red cards after Doue's opening goal.

Orlando Pirates coach backs young striker
Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has explained why he continues to back under-fire striker Boitumelo Radiopane despite growing criticism from fans. The 21-year-old has already featured three times this season across the MTN8 and Betway Premiership but is still waiting for his first goal. His latest appearance came in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 semi-final first leg at Orlando Stadium, where he came off the bench and fluffed a late chance to win the game. Kaizer Chiefs coach involved from Tunisia 'These kinds of players, I think, it's easy for a coach because he has a fantastic mentality. He's a well-educated player and a man, respectful,' said Ouaddou. Orlando Pirates forward Boitumelo Radiopane Image via @OrlandoPirates on X 'He is a worker. So, I'm lucky to have such players to train, and he's a professional. It means when we call him for duty, he doesn't have any problem sitting on the bench and coming back to give everything. Kaizer Chiefs star accepts criticism 'And all my players, I'm really, really lucky about all the players that I have in Orlando Pirates. They have a fantastic mentality. It's one of the first dressing rooms that I have seen with such a great mentality of the players,' the French-Moroccan coach concluded. Cupido opens up about early Sundowns struggles
'Before, it was tough personally, but my wife made it very easy and she told me that everything works through God,' said Cupido. Keanu Cupido has opened up about settling in at Mamelodi Sundowns after initially struggling for game time following his arrival from Cape Town City midway through last season. Sundowns' Cupido on the rise Cupido forced his way into the Brazilians' line-up at the recent FIFA Club World Cup, where he featured in all three group-stage matches against Ulsan HD, Borussia Dortmund and Fluminense. ALSO READ: 'We must play to win' – Cardoso on Sundowns' MTN8 ambitions This season, the 27-year-old has already played in all four matches across all competitions, a marked improvement from the previous campaign where he managed just two league appearances before the Club World Cup. 'Before, it was tough personally, but my wife made it very easy and she told me that everything works through God and if it's His time then everything will work out, and that kept me going,' Cupido said. 'She played a part in keeping me motivated and keeping my head up by continuing to work hard, so I feel like that's the most important thing, having a supportive structure. 'Going into the (Club World Cup) tournament helped me a lot and it showed people who I am basically. Now, I feel like I have more confidence going into this season than the previous one.' Cupido will again be expected to play a key role when Masandawana face Magesi FC in the Betway Premiership at Seshego Stadium on Wednesday night. 'I just played simple and it helped me a lot' He credited his teammates for helping him settle quickly and establish a strong partnership with Grant Kekana at the heart of Sundowns' defence. 'The players at Mamelodi Sundowns make it very easy for each and every one of us,' he added. 'If you go into a big game, the players will tell you to just do the basics for the first two minutes, keep it simple and your confidence will grow from then on. 'That's what I did, I tried to take it easy by not forcing and rushing. I just played simple and it helped me a lot to settle into the first game and from there onwards, it's been a dream.' Kick-off for the match is 7.30 pm with Magesi still searching for their first win of the new season after two successive draws against Polokwane City and Stellenbosch FC. Orlando Pirates' spirited draw with Mamelodi Sundowns offers hope of revival, says Motale
Evidence Makgopa led the line with authority, his performance against Sundowns offering fresh optimism for Pirates' attacking fortunes. Photo: Itumeleng English Independent Media Image: Itumeleng English Independent Media Orlando Pirates' draw against Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 might have been a stalemate on paper, but it could well prove to be the spark that launches their season. A lot could have gone wrong over the weekend. Pirates entered the clash on the back of two consecutive league defeats that sent shockwaves through the Premiership, and facing a Sundowns side heavily tipped to be their strongest challengers this campaign. Another loss could easily have sparked a full-blown crisis. Against a well-oiled opponent whose squad continuity has been the foundation of their dominance for over a decade, the writing appeared to be on the wall. Yet, the Buccaneers rose to the occasion, delivering what was arguably their most convincing performance of the season so far. Video Player is loading. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad loading Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou is still finding his feet in the hot seat, and while he does not have the luxury of time, his decision to reintroduce several regular starters from last season, including Deano van Rooyen and Thalente Mbatha, paid dividends, with the team producing a much-improved display compared to their opening two matches. That performance now sets the stage for a packed schedule. Pirates host Stellenbosch FC on Wednesday night (7.30pm kick-off) before turning their attention back to Sundowns for the second leg of the MTN8 semi-final on Saturday, already confirmed as a sold-out affair. Reflecting on the team's progress, former Pirates defender and CAF Champions League winner Edward Motale believes the side is beginning to show encouraging signs after their slow start. 'We have started the season badly, but it is not as bad as it seems because the coach is still trying to find his combinations,' Motale told Independent Newspapers. 'There are a lot of new players and he is trying to accommodate everyone into the side and get them going this season.' Motale also pointed out that despite the disappointing results, there have been positives, particularly in chance creation. 'There were a lot of positives,' he continued. 'They have been managing to create chances. In the first match they had about 13 shots at goal but they lost. In their second league match they had about 12 shots, and that shows that they are able to create chances and they are playing good football. They just need to convert their chances.' Ouaddou has faced pressure after the team's poor start, but Saturday's result against Sundowns provided some breathing room. Motale feels the performance showed the players are beginning to understand each other better. 'In the second leg fixture Pirates will be in the final at the end of it. The players are starting to understand each other well now even though they are not fully there yet. They are about 80–85% there and you can see that.' While the Sundowns showdown looms large, Ouaddou is unlikely to underestimate Stellenbosch. The Maroons frustrated Pirates last season, claiming an impressive four points in their two meetings. And while they remain a huge threat, for Pirates, two back-to-back good results may just be the reset they need to get back on the horse and fight for top honours.
