CITU Urges Massive Participation in Nationwide General Strike on July 9 Against Anti-Labour Policies

Hans India02-07-2025
Gadwal: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has called upon all sections of the working class to actively participate and make the Nationwide General Strike on July 9, 2025, a grand success. The call was issued by CITU district president A. Venkataswamy and secretary V.V. Narasimha, who urged workers across sectors to oppose the anti-labour policies of the central government.
Speaking at the CITU district office in Gadwal on Wednesday, the leaders released a special General Strike Booklet in preparation for the strike. The event was attended by trade union members and activists from various sectors, including workers from Sanghala and Marlapalli villages.
The leaders stated that this strike is being organized nationwide following a joint call by central trade unions against the labour law amendments introduced by the central government. They emphasized that the hard-earned labour rights achieved through decades of struggle and sacrifice are being undone in the name of 'four labour codes.' These new laws, they claimed, are designed to take away the fundamental rights of workers, including the right to form unions.
They criticized the central government for amending labour laws to favor corporate interests, arguing that the amendments aim to make union registration more difficult and isolate workers from union activities. 'The Centre is trying to expand capitalist exploitation by weakening labour protections and silencing workers' voices,' they warned.
CITU accused the central government of pushing pro-corporate policies under the guise of "Ease of Doing Business," which in reality aim to destroy trade unions, deny minimum wages, and remove social security schemes for workers. They alleged that the Centre is dividing the working class through political and communal strategies while handing over national wealth to corporate forces.
The leaders reiterated that the July 9 strike is a united resistance against these anti-worker, pro-corporate policies. They called upon not just industrial workers but also farmers, agricultural labourers, sanitation workers, construction workers, mid-day meal workers, ASHA workers, and hostel staff to join the strike in large numbers and make their voices heard.
Among those present at the event were:
Uppair Narasimha, CITU District Vice President,
Thimmappa, Gadwal Mandal President of VOEL Union,
Ananda Raju, District General Secretary of Hostel Workers' Union,
Raju and Padma, Government School Sanitation Workers,
Ravi, Sharabanna, and Devanna, Gram Panchayat Workers,
Shiva and Harikrishna, Building Construction Workers,
Sunitha and Govindamma, Mid-Day Meal Workers,
Shivamma and Suseela, ASHA Workers,
Rameshwaramma and Saraswati, Hostel Workers,
Ramakrishna and Beesanna,and Farmers.
The CITU leaders concluded by urging all sectors to stand united and ensure that the July 9 general strike becomes a strong message of worker solidarity and resistance to exploitation.

FM Sitharaman to brief GST panels on rate rejig, cess phase-out starting Wednesday

As the Centre pushes ahead with its next wave of tax reforms, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman will brief the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council's groups of ministers (GoMs) in New Delhi this week on rationalizing tax rates and phasing out the compensation cess, two persons informed about the development said. Sitharaman is expected to brief the three separate ministerial groups of the GST Council that are scheduled to meet in the capital on Wednesday and Thursday. The three groups pertain to rate rejig, insurance and compensation cess. 'The meetings scheduled for the next two days are crucial in implementing GST reforms,' said one of the persons cited above on condition of not being named. The development highlights the urgency with which the central government is pursuing the tax reform that is expected to give a boost to consumption demand in the economy. Notably, Sitharaman also chairs the GST Council. The ministerial group on rate rationalisation led by Bihar's deputy chief minister Samrat Chaudhary and the group on compensation cess led by Union minister of state for finance Pankaj Chaudhary will examine the proposals for finalising their recommendations to the GST Council, which is expected to meet sometime in September, the second person quoted above said. Combined with the income tax relief offered to individuals in the budget this year, an above-normal monsoon that is expected to support rural incomes, and interest rate cuts by the RBI, the proposed GST rate reduction is expected to help in stimulating the economy. The central government is also working on other reforms that could accelerate economic growth. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held meetings with his senior cabinet colleagues and economists to discuss next-generation reforms,Mint reported on Tuesday. As per the Centre's proposals circulated among the ministerial groups, the 12% and 28% GST slabs will be dropped, a new 40% slab will be introduced for a handful of products, and the compensation cess will be done away with. This restructuring may lead to some short-term revenue loss, which the central government expects will be made up by the boost in demand for goods and services. According to a note by City Research, the annual fiscal cost could be ₹ 1.1-1.2 trillion, with around two-thirds of this burden eventually falling on states. Queries emailed to the finance ministry and to the GST Council secretariat on Tuesday seeking comments for the story remained unanswered. According to City Research, doing away with the 12% slab and shifting most of the products to 5% would lower the tax burden on a host of essential goods including medicines, processed foods and non-alcoholic beverages, some dairy products, some apparel, hotel accommodation and some construction materials. Merging the 28% slab with the 18% would benefit white goods such as air conditioners and refrigerators, and cement, City Research said.

Omar Abdullah's Cryptic 'Severus Snape' Post Amid J&K Statehood Speculation Gets Internet's Attention

Last Updated: J&K CM Omar Abdullah's Harry Potter post on X got the internet talking, with many asking him the meaning behind the cryptic meme while others asked Grok to help Amid speculation over statehood for Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah set the internet ablaze by sharing a Harry Potter meme on Tuesday. Featuring the character of Potions master Severus Snape from the beloved series, the text accompanying the visuals said: 'Please I can't take anymore of this." Abdullah's post on X got the internet talking, with many asking him the meaning behind the cryptic meme while others asked the AI, Grok, to explain what it is about. 🫣 — Omar Abdullah (@OmarAbdullah) August 19, 2025 'Statehood?" one user asked while another said: 'No statehood. Sit down and enjoy the mayorship." (sic) One user asked: 'Why other CMs are not as cool as him ?". Another said: 'No statehood bt administration rules." (sic) At the time of writing this report, Abdullah did not clarify what his post was about, further fuelling speculation especially since it came shortly after at least two media outlets reported that the central government could move a Bill related to J&K's statehood in Parliament on Wednesday (August 20). On August 5, 2019, the Union government split the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) into two union territories – Jammu and Kashmir with a legislative assembly, and Ladakh without one. The government and top ministers have said J&K statehood will be restored when the time is right. The Supreme Court, too, had asked the government to restore J&K's statehood at the earliest. It had earlier upheld the Centre's August 5 decision to nullify Article 370, which gave special status to the region. The restoration of statehood and special status is an emotive issue in J&K, and several political parties and activists in the Kashmir valley have been vocal in their demand to roll back the milestone move that made international headlines and sparked protests. Last year, in an election held after a decade, the National Conference-Congress alliance came to power in J&K. Omar Abdullah of the NC has called for the early restoration of statehood. 'PAID A POLITICAL PRICE' A few days ago, in a fiery Independence Day speech, Abdullah said he was paying a political price for pinning his hopes on India's democracy and the Centre for restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's rights, including statehood. He said he took a big political risk when he took a stand that J&K will get whatever it needs from democracy and that nothing can be achieved through a confrontation with the government. 'Probably, I have paid a political price for it," he said, referring to recent speculation that statehood reinstatement will be announced on Independence Day. He said though he did not have much expectations, he was led to believe that it might happen after all. 'I had no expectations but I was being constantly told that the documents are ready and now just the announcement is to be made. But the announcement never came. The ray of hope is fading, but we will not give up," he added. Click here to add News18 as your preferred news source on Google.
