World's largest container ship MSC IRINA makes historic debut at Vizhinjam International Seaport
Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], June 9 (ANI): The MSC IRINA, recognised as the world's largest container ship by TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) capacity, docked at the Vizhinjam International Seaport on Monday morning and will be berthed till Tuesday.
According to an Adani group press release, this monumental arrival marks a significant milestone for the seaport, which was dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 2.
The MSC IRINA boasts an impressive capacity of 24,346 TEUs, making it a formidable player in global shipping. With a length of 399.9 metres and a width of 61.3 metres, the vessel is approximately four times longer than a standard FIFA-designated football field.
Designed specifically to facilitate the transportation of large volumes of containers between Asia and Europe, the MSC IRINA is pivotal in enhancing trade routes and logistics efficiency.
This vessel makes its maiden visit to a South Asian port, highlighting Vizhinjam's capabilities in handling Ultra-Large Container Vessels (ULCVs). The port has recently welcomed other Icon-class vessels, including MSC Turkiye and MSC Michel Cappellini, further establishing its reputation as a key hub in maritime trade.
The MSC IRINA was launched in March 2023 and embarked on its maiden voyage in April of the same year. It is engineered to stack containers up to 26 tiers high, offering unparalleled capacity in container stacking.
Notably, the MSC IRINA surpasses its predecessor, OOCL Spain, by a margin of 150 TEUs. In alignment with contemporary environmental standards, the vessel is equipped with energy-saving features that contribute to a reduction in carbon emissions by up to 4 per cent, significantly lowering its carbon footprint while maintaining operational efficiency.
The docking of the MSC IRINA at Vizhinjam International Seaport not only underscores the port's strategic importance in global shipping but also represents a leap forward in sustainable maritime practices, setting a benchmark for future developments in the industry. (ANI)

Pakistan boosts defence budget by 20% but slashes overall spending in 2025-26
Pakistan will raise defence spending by a steep 20% after a military clash with its old enemy India last month, but will slash overall federal expenditure for fiscal 2025-26 by a hefty 7% to 17.57 trillion rupees ($62 billion). The budget presented on Tuesday by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's government allocated 2.55 trillion rupees ($9 billion) to defence in July-June 2025-26, up from 2.12 trillion. It projected a deficit of 3.9% of GDP against the 5.9% targeted for 2024-25. Inflation was projected at 7.5% and growth at 4.2%. The South Asian nation wants to kickstart growth while boosting its defences after the worst fighting with its neighbour in nearly three decades – which it has cast as a victory – and meeting the strictures of an International Monetary Fund finance programme. 'After defeating India in a conventional war, now we have to surpass it in the economic field,' Sharif said in a statement. Pakistan must also contend with the uncertainty of new import tariffs being imposed by the United States, its biggest export market. The clash with India was sparked in April by Islamists who killed 26 men in an attack on Hindu tourists in Indian Kashmir. Islamabad denied New Delhi's allegation that the militants were backed by Pakistan. Four days of fighting featured jets, missiles, drones and artillery. For the coming year, Pakistan's government allocated 742 billion Pakistani rupees ($2.63 billion) to military pensions, taking the entire defence budget to 3.292 trillion Pakistani rupees ($11.67 billion). That included 704 billion Pakistani rupees ($2.5 billion) in spending on equipment and other physical assets. India's defence spending in its 2025–26 (April-March) fiscal year was set at $78.7 billion, up 9.5%, including pensions and $21 billion earmarked for equipment. It has indicated that it too will boost defence spending further. Sharif's government has projected 4.2% economic growth in 2025-26, saying it has steadied the economy, which looked at risk of defaulting on its debts as recently as 2023. Growth this fiscal year is likely to be 2.7%, against the budgeted target of 3.6%. Pakistan's growth lags far behind the region. In 2024, South Asian countries grew by an average of 5.8% and the Asian Development Bank expects 6.0% in 2025. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb said the government intended to complete the privatisation of Pakistan International Airlines, a request of the IMF. Growth should be aided by a sharp drop in the cost of borrowing, the government says, after a succession of interest rate cuts. But economists warn that monetary policy alone may not be enough, with fiscal constraints and IMF-mandated reforms still weighing on investment. Aurangzeb said that the budget was the start of a strategy to boost exports, increase foreign currency reserves to avoid the balance of payments crises of the past, and create a more competitive economy. 'In short, our budget strategy is to change the economy's DNA by bringing basic changes,' he said.

Punjab CM, Arvind Kejriwal launch 'Fast Track Punjab Portal' for ease of doing business, boost industry in state
Mohali (Punjab) [India], June 10 (ANI): Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday launched the 'Fast Track Punjab Portal', which aims to simplify the process of starting new businesses, setting up projects, and expanding industries in the state. Speaking on the occasion, Mann alleged that earlier governments treated industrialists like ATM machines and extracted election funds from them. 'Industrialists were so harassed that they would say, 'Forget it, we won't set up industries here.' Some moved to Madhya Pradesh, others to Himachal Pradesh. But now, industrialists can identify land and apply through the Punjab Invest Portal. Within two weeks, all clearances will be granted, and the registry will be completed. You can start your industry within 24 hours,' he said. Mann emphasised that the initiative aims to boost both revenue and employment opportunities. 'We want industrialists' to grow and employment to increase. When your revenue rises, you'll set up more industries, creating more jobs. Previous governments had a share in every sector. Mandi Gobindgarh, once Asia's largest iron market, now looks like a deserted city. They always claimed the treasury was empty, but we never said that. We will fill the treasury and provide jobs,' he stated. He said industralists are 'annadatas' like farmers but some people are afraid because of previous governments. 'We have released budget for constructing 19,000 km of link roads in Punjab and are opening skill development centres to ensure you get skilled workers right here,' he added. Kejriwal said the initiative is unprecedented in India and reflects his government's distinct policy approach. 'We met traders and received their proposals. After listening and understanding their concerns, we made this decision. We want traders who left Punjab to return and work here. Our intent is clear, and that's why we are making this announcement,' Kejriwal said. He emphasised creating a business-friendly environment where industrialists can focus 90 per cent of their time on business growth rather than running around government offices. 'Simple policies, quick approvals, and an honest system--this is the identity of the new Punjab. When industries grow, Punjab will progress,' he added. Highlighting the significance of the portal, Kejriwal described it as a 'historic' move, stating, 'No government in any state has made such announcements until today. Starting a new business, setting up a project, or expanding an industry in Punjab has now become extremely easy. Just apply on the Invest Punjab Portal, and all approvals will be granted within 45 days. For projects up to Rs. 125 crore, approvals will be given in just three days. No running around, no delays, no corruption. Punjab is ready for your industry's new journey.' (ANI)

Dharavi Redevelopment aims for
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 10 (ANI): SVR Srinivas, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP), said on Tuesday that the project is central to Mumbai's redevelopment, with an emphasis on housing and livelihoods. In an interview with ANI, Srinivas provided an in-depth overview of the project that also lays thrust on building resilient ecology and infrastructure. 'The vision is slum-free Mumbai. That is the broader vision. And through that, to become slum-free Maharashtra. And it's a project of importance and central to the redevelopment of Mumbai. So it is also a step towards slum-free India. That is the vision,' he said. 'The motto is housing for all. Nobody should be left out in the process as far as housing is concerned. It is the most inclusive Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) project ever undertaken in India,' he added. The Dharavi Redevelopment Project is a major urban renewal initiative for country's financial capital. The project aims to transform Dharavi area, Asia's largest slum, into a modern, integrated township. Srinivas emphasised the government's unwavering commitment to transforming one of Asia's largest informal settlements into a sustainable and inclusive urban space. He added that the DRP is as much about preserving livelihoods as it is about providing shelter. 'The most important part of this project is number one, housing for all, which we are giving. Number two, ensure that the livelihoods are protected. It is more of a livelihoods issue. And I call this project a movement, because such a project has never ever taken place in our redevelopment history or urban history anywhere in India,' Srinivas said. The DRP is being implemented through a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. The project is a joint venture between the Adani Group and the Government of Maharashtra. All eligible residential tenements in Dharavi, are slated to get flats with independent kitchens and toilets measuring a minimum 350 square feet (sq ft), which is 17 per cent more and the highest among slum redevelopment projects in Mumbai. The ambitious Dharavi Redevelopment Project, received approval from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis last month. The proposed master plan is an attempt to build on the existing characteristics of Dharavi and create a world-class district for Dharavikars and reimagine a new heart for Mumbai. The Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) is a unique opportunity to transform the lives and 'live-work' conditions of Dharavikars, aiming for a higher quality of life with great infrastructure and public amenities. As per the Dharavi Master Plan, it is being built on the foundation of three guiding principles: driving economic change through redevelopment, building resilient ecology and infrastructure, and fostering an equitable Dharavi. It will have an interconnected network of green and public spaces, ranging from large city parks to smaller community playgrounds, ensuring every resident can access vibrant, walkable open areas. This network shall strengthen ecological resilience and enhance Dharavi's quality of life every day. A large active public open space is being planned in the centre of Dharavi, which will not only serve the recreation needs of the residents but also of Mumbai city at large. (ANI)
