Two other police personnel named for Shaurya Chakra this Independence Day eve are anti-Naxal encounter specialists of Chhattisgarh Police - inspectors Laxman Kewat and Rameshwar Prasad Deshmukh.
On Thursday, home ministry also announced 1,090 police medals, including 233 for gallantry, for personnel of police, fire, home guard, civil defence, and correctional services. As many as 99 police personnel were picked for the President's Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM) and 758 for Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM).
While two CRPF Shaurya Chakra awardees - constables Sanjay Tiwari and Feda Hussain - had engaged in a fierce terrorist encounter in Srinagar on Nov 2, 2024, and neutralised hardcore terrorists despite being injured, constable Saddam Hussain had killed a foreign terrorist three days later in a critical engagement with terrorists in Bandipora.
Among 1,090 medals announced on Thursday, J&K police lead the table with 143 medals, followed by UP police with 95, CRPF with 82, BSF with 67, Maharashtra police with 49, Intelligence Bureau with 31, Gujarat police with 23, Andhra police with 22, and CBI with 21 medals. As many as 18 medals were announced for Delhi Police, including three PSM and 15 MSM.
Among the 233 personnel honoured for bravery, 127 (or over 54%), are from J&K police, 20 from CRPF, 17 from UP police, 16 from BSF, 14 from Chhattisgarh police, nine from Odisha police, seven each from Maharashtra police and Bihar police, five from Jharkhand police, three from Assam police, and one from Telangana police.

While 152 gallantry medals honour actions in
Jammu and Kashmir
, 54 were announced for brave acts in Left-wing extremism-hit areas, three in the North-East and 24 in other regions. Five gallantry awards will be conferred posthumously.
Twelve of the 14 gallantry medal awardees from Chhattisgarh police are personnel of District Reserve Guard (DRG), which comprises mostly surrendered and former Maoists.
DRG has been instrumental in blowing the cover of senior Maoist figures and has been in the lead during anti-Maoist operations in Chhattisgarh.
In fact, it were DRG personnel who neutralised top Maoist Basavaraju in May this year. The awards this year, though, are operations undertaken in 2020, 2021 and 2023.
Senior Chhattisgarh police officer Sunil Sharma (IPS), who as Sukma superintendent of police had led an operation that resulted in neutralisation of two Maoists, is also on the 2025 gallantry medal list.

Bhubaneswar: OdishaChief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Friday said he has given 'absolute power' to the police to take action against those involved in crimes against women. Addressing the Independence Day function at Mahatma Gandhi Marg in Bhubaneswar, Majhi said his government will not hesitate to bring a special legislation to 'completely end' organised crimes. From the function, the Chief Minister also announced an additional 5 kg of rice will be provided to the poor people in 11 districts for three months. 'People who are involved in crimes against women have no place in society, they must be in jail. Therefore, I have given absolute power to the police to take necessary actions in such cases,' he said. Majhi said nobody, how influential he may be, will be spared if he is involved in crimes against women. The statement came as the State reported a slew of crimes against women, with the Opposition raising questions on the law and order situation. 'The law and order situation of the State is more or less under control. However, we have to strengthen and make it more effective,' he said. Noting that intoxication was one of the major factors behind the rise in crimes, Majhi said he has directed the police to against such activities. 'The government will take all measures to firmly control 'goondaraj'. The process of identification of criminals has already started,' he said. 'In order to completely end organised crimes, the State government will not hesitate to bring special legislation. Extortion and other such activities are completely illegal and those will be considered as organised crimes and dealt with firmly,' he said. Majhi said his government was committed to making colleges and universities safe for women by implementing initiatives like 'Shaktishree'. He maintained that women's empowerment is not just a slogan for his government. 'We have provided financial assistance to over 1 crore women through 'Subhadra Yojana'. Women have been able to become small entrepreneurs by utilising the assistance. The State has so far produced 17 lakh 'lakhpati didis',' he said. The Chief Minister said the State's commitment to women's empowerment is evident from the 2025-26 annual budget, in which allocations of Rs 89,861 crore have been made for schemes in regard to this. Listing the social welfare measures undertaken by his government, Majhi announced that 27 lakh poor families, who are beneficiaries of the 'Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana', in 11 districts will be given 5 kg additional rice per month for three months free of cost.

On I-Day, around 1500 convicts granted special remission at Tihar Jail
On the occasion of the 79th Independence Day, special remission in a range of 15 to 25 days, was granted to 1497 convicts at the Tihar Jail. During the Independence Day celebration at Tihar prison, Director General (Prisons) Satish Golchha, said that a total of 1,497 inmates were eligible for special remission ranging from 15 to 25 days based on their conduct during their time in the prison. In an effort to tackle overcrowding in the Capital's prisons, DG Golchha announced that a new jail will be built in Narela with Rs 145.58 crore sanctioned by the Delhi government. Golchha said that around 600 inmates are being provided training in Unnati Cognitive Behavioural Programme of the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) in collaboration with Osmania University, while several other organisations are contributing to vocational training across jails. DG Golchha further said that over 3,200 vacant posts in Tihar Jail have been filled after Jail Cadre staff were promoted. '1,697 warden and 93 assistant superintendent posts have been newly advertised to strengthen manpower,' the DG said. The DG also informed that the department had recently taken over the operation of the Lampur Detention Centre.
