For those engrossed in the rising popularity of daily brain teasers,
The New York Times
' 'Connections' puzzle has once again delivered a challenge laced with subtle wordplay and lateral thinking. Puzzle #715, released today, has already caused a stir among enthusiasts, many of whom took to social media to discuss its cryptic categories and deceptive overlaps. If you're among the countless players scratching their heads over today's word clusters, you're not alone.
Here's a breakdown of how today's grid unraveled.
Understanding the Game: How 'Connections' Works
'Connections' presents players with a 4x4 grid of sixteen words each day at midnight. The task? Sort the words into four distinct groups of four based on a shared theme or linguistic pattern. It could be a set of items, common expressions, or even words that transform with a letter tweak. One incorrect grouping costs a life, and four errors spell game over.

The groups are color-coded by difficulty: yellow (easiest), green and blue (intermediate), and purple (often the trickiest, involving clever wordplay). Today's game leaned heavily on interpretive thinking, especially for the elusive purple set.
Hints That Set the Tone
Here are the subtle nudges offered for the May 26 puzzle, as mentioned in a report by Forbes:
Live Events
Something a guest might expect upon arrival.
Concepts or words that stand on opposite ends.
Items that might be worn—albeit with flair.
A linguistic trick where a single-letter change reveals the link.
Each hint signposted the path to unlocking the puzzle. Yet, the real fun came from realizing how everyday words could morph into themes with just a shift in perspective.
Breaking Down the May 26 Puzzle Grid
The 16 words players had to sort today were:
JOKER, TEDDY, SHEET, FRIDGE, POLAR, TOWEL, COUNTER, GUMMY, SLIP, DIN, WASHCLOTH, HOSE, REVERSE, PILLOWCASE, GARTER, OPPOSITE.
At first glance, the connections might seem loose. However, patience and pattern recognition would have revealed the following thematic sets:
Yellow Category
– Linen Closet Staples
These soft essentials evoke a well-stocked guest room:
PILLOWCASE
SHEET
TOWEL
WASHCLOTH
This grouping played on domestic familiarity, offering the gentlest entry into the puzzle.
Green Category
– Polar Opposites
A conceptual set, these words convey contrast and opposition:
COUNTER
OPPOSITE
POLAR
REVERSE
Here, the connection lay not in function but meaning, highlighting extremities.
Blue Category
– Lingerie Items
Subtle, perhaps even risqué, this cluster required both cultural and fashion awareness:
GARTER
HOSE
SLIP
TEDDY
Not all players caught this on first glance, but the grouping proved unmistakable once spotted.
Purple Category –
Altered Card Games
This set featured playful manipulation: replace the first letter of these words and they become recognizable card games:
DIN (→
Gin
)
FRIDGE (→
Bridge
)
GUMMY (→
Rummy
)
JOKER (→
Poker
)
This was arguably today's trickiest segment, owing to the need for lateral and phonetic thinking.

Jagadish withdraws from AMMA presidential race; Director M.A. Nishad calls move questionable

(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) Actor Jagadish, who had filed his nomination for the president's post in the AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists) election, unexpectedly withdrew his candidacy—a decision that has triggered strong, contrasting reactions from within the Malayalam film industry. A surprise exit that stirred mixed reactions While some called it a selfless move, others have questioned the motive behind it. Jagadish claimed he stepped aside after consultations with veteran actors Mohanlal, Mammootty, and Suresh Gopi. Reported by Manorama, these stars supported the idea of a woman leading the association. Sandra Thomas calls it a historic step Taking to Facebook. producer and actor Sandra Thomas lauded Jagadish's gesture, calling it a 'progressive' decision that would be remembered in silver letters. 'His decision in the context of AMMA's murky election is both progressive and welcome,' Sandra wrote. 'Choosing to step aside and encourage women to take leadership roles is something worth highlighting. But calling something progressive alone isn't enough — it becomes truly meaningful only when put into action.' Her words read, "ജഗദിഷിന്റെ നിലപാട് പുരോഗമനപരം കലുഷിതമായ അമ്മയുടെ സംഘടന തെരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട് ജഗതീഷ് എടുത്ത നിലപാട് പുരോഗമനപരവും സ്വാഗതാർഹവുമാണ് , അതിൽ സ്വയം സ്ഥാനാര്ഥിത്വത്തിൽ നിന്ന് പിൻവാങ്ങി സ്ത്രീകൾ നേതൃത്വത്തിലേക്ക് വരട്ടെ എന്ന സമീപനം എടുത്തു പറയേണ്ടതും ചരിത്രത്തിൽ വെള്ളിവെളിച്ചം പോലെ തിളങ്ങി നിൽക്കുന്നതുമാണ് . by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo പുരോഗമനപരം എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞാൽ മാത്രം പോരാ അത് പ്രവർത്തികമാക്കുമ്പോൾ ആണ് വ്യക്തികൾ തിളക്കമുള്ളതായി മാറുന്നത് ." M.A. Nishad raises doubts over the intent Not everyone was convinced. Director M.A. Nishad openly questioned the reasoning behind Jagadish's withdrawal. In a sharply worded post, Nishad asked why Jagadish had sought the blessings of superstar actors before stepping down if he had always intended to withdraw. 'If 'Annan' was going to withdraw anyway, why did he need Mammootty's and Lalettan's consent? Did he ask them before filing the nomination?' he wrote, adding, 'It all smells like a bit of 'Ayyyo Achaa, don't go!' Something's just off. ' M.A Nishad's Facebook note read, "അത് ശരി... Chess: Divya Deshmukh dedicates World Cup title to her first trainer, who passed away in 2020

Divya Deshmukh received a massive reception on arrival in Nagpur after winning the Women's Chess World Cup. (PTI) Nineteen-year-old Grandmaster Divya Deshmukh received a grand reception at Nagpur airport on Wednesday after winning the Women's World Cup title in Batumi, Georgia, where she defeated Indian veteran Koneru Humpy in a tie-breaker following two drawn classical games. The victory earned her the Grandmaster title, a spot in the Candidates tournament, and USD 50,000 in prize money. Deshmukh, who entered the tournament as an underdog aiming for a GM-norm, traveled from Batumi to Mumbai before reaching her hometown Nagpur, accompanied by her mother. Her relatives and fans gathered at the airport well in advance to welcome her. "I am feeling very happy that so many people have come to felicitate me, and chess is getting the recognition," said Deshmukh upon her arrival. The young champion credited her success to her family and first coach Rahul Joshi, who passed away in 2020 at the age of 40. "My parents have played the biggest role in my career. Without them I would not have reached here. Credit to my family, my parents, my sister, and my first coach, Rahul Joshi sir. He always wanted me to become the Grandmaster, and this is for him," she said. Expressing gratitude to her family members, she added, "My mother and father had a bigger role to play but definitely my whole family, my sister Arya Deshmukh, my grandmother, grandfather...I by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Historic Cars Every Enthusiast Should Know Undo don't think whatever I will say will be enough."
