Google Chrome issues urgent warning: Harmful extensions could be spying on everything you do online
If you use Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge on your computer, now is the time to take your online security seriously and check your browser for hidden risks. Security researchers at Koi Security have uncovered a campaign that compromised at least 18 different browser extensions, many disguised as helpful tools, all while quietly tracking users' web activity and putting personal data in jeopardy. So far, over 2.3 million people have been caught up in this silent invasion of privacy. The problematic extensions at the heart of this campaign appeared to do exactly what they advertised. They offered features users want, such as emoji keyboards, video speed controls, weather updates, volume boosters, VPN services for Discord and TikTok, YouTube unblockers, and dark themes. Once installed, these 'harmless' add-ons covertly turned into surveillance tools that secretly monitor browsing activity and send that data to remote servers. Google has already removed the extensions from the official Chrome Web Store. However, if you installed any of them before they were taken down, you will need to delete them manually. To make matters worse, some of these extensions continue to circulate on third-party websites, still putting users at risk. Security experts found that these extensions followed a set pattern. First, each one captured the address of every website you visited. That information was then sent back to a remote server and tagged with a unique identifier attached to your device. The server could respond with instructions to automatically redirect your browser to other websites of its choosing. All this happened silently, making it easy for the attackers to spy on or even manipulate your browsing experience. For example, if you clicked on a perfectly normal video meeting invite, the extension might redirect you to a fake site mimicking a necessary software update. Downloading anything from there could open your computer up to further malware. Some of the known extensions include Unlock Discord, Dark Theme, Volume Max, Unblock TikTok, Unlock YouTube VPN, Geco Colorpick, Weather, and various others for both Chrome and Edge. It's likely that even more unsafe add-ons are still circulating, especially if downloaded outside the official extension stores. To safeguard your information, open your browser's settings and look for 'Extensions' in the main menu or under 'More tools.' Go through the list and remove any add-ons you do not recognise or no longer use. Click 'Remove' or 'Uninstall' for anything suspicious, then restart your browser. It is wise to change important passwords, clear your saved autofill entries, and run a trusted antivirus or anti-malware scan for extra peace of mind. Sadly, even extensions from reputable stores can be updated to include harmful code, so it is important to regularly review what you have installed. Check for recent reviews and uninstall anything you do not remember adding. Most browser add-ons are safe when downloaded from official sources but cybercriminals are always finding new ways to hide their tracks.

Google's AI can now call local businesses on your behalf to check availability, pricing, and other details
Google is bringing back a familiar idea with a new twist, and this time, it's ready for the public. The tech giant has announced a new feature that lets its AI call local businesses for you through Google Search, gathering information like pricing and availability so you don't have to pick up the phone yourself. First tested in January this year, this feature is now rolling out to all users in the US, with broader access for those who subscribe to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra plans. It works with specific types of businesses for now, such as pet groomers, dry cleaners, and auto you search for one of these services, for example, 'pet groomers near me', you will see a new option: 'Have AI check pricing.' After selecting this, Google will ask for extra details like your pet's breed, the service you want, preferred timing, and how you'd like to get updates (either via email or text). Once that's done, the AI will make the call for you and send back the information it is not the first time Google has tried something like this. Back in 2018, at its I/O developer conference, CEO Sundar Pichai had famously demoed Google Duplex – an AI assistant that could make phone calls to book appointments. The demo got mixed reactions, with some people expressing concern that the voice sounded too human and lacked clear disclosure. Google had to put a pause on its plans to rollout the feature. Robby Stein, Google Search's vice president of product, explained to The Verge that the new feature uses a combination of Google's Duplex model and its newer Gemini AI system. 'Gemini, with Duplex tech, will be able to make calls on your behalf,' Stein said, adding that the AI will introduce itself clearly to the business as a Google bot, calling on behalf of a time, the AI introduces itself clearly and sticks to gathering basic service details. Business owners can also opt out of receiving such AI calls in their Google Business Profile this AI calling feature, Google is also testing more advanced capabilities under its Gemini AI programme. This includes Gemini 2.5 Pro, which is now available to users who have opted into 'AI Mode'. This version is built for more complex tasks like coding, maths, and deep research. It also powers 'Deep Search,' a new tool that can dig up in-depth reports by reasoning through multiple queries these advanced features are limited to subscribers, the AI calling tool is free to use but only available in the US. There is currently no information on if and when it will launch in India. However, with the AI Mode's launch in India recently, we can expect the AI Calling tool to make it to India soon too. Google to Apple users: Update these MacBooks now if you want to continue using Chrome securely
If you're using a MacBook that's still running macOS Big Sur, it might be time to finally hit that update button. Google has announced that Chrome version 138 will be the last one to support macOS 11, aka macOS Big Sur. After this, you won't be getting any more Chrome updates on that operating system — no new features, and more importantly, no security patches. That means if you keep using an older OS, you're putting yourself at risk. To stay protected and keep Chrome running smoothly, you'll need to update your Mac to at least macOS 12 Monterey or a newer move isn't out of the blue. Apple itself has already stopped official support for macOS Big Sur, so Google is following suit. Without updates from Apple, Google can't guarantee the security of its browser on that system. So even if Chrome still technically works on Big Sur after version 138, it's not going to be safe, and you definitely won't be getting the latest features your Mac is eligible for a newer macOS version, updating it now is the best step. It not only ensures that Chrome stays up to date but also gives you access to improved system performance and security across the board. If your device is too old to upgrade beyond Big Sur, unfortunately, your time with Chrome is likely winding down. Chrome usually updates itself in the background when you close and reopen the browser, but if it's been a while since you last restarted, you might want to check manually. On a Mac, click the three dots in the top right corner, head to Help > About Google Chrome, and you'll see if there's an update waiting. You can also set Chrome to update automatically for all users by enabling it from the About Google Chrome section, but only if it's installed in the main Applications those on Windows, Android or iOS, the update process is a bit different, but still simple. Windows users just need to close and relaunch Chrome. Android users should head to the Play Store, while iPhone users can update from the App the key point here is for Mac users still clinging to Big Sur — update your system now if you want to continue using Chrome safely.
