In a proud moment for Indian cue sports, Ahmedabad's Dhvajj Haria has won the Walter Lindrum Australian Open Billiards Championship 2025 held in Melbourne. An elated Dhvajj tells us, 'I feel proud and overjoyed.
This is my first World Billiards (WBL) title and I want to dedicate it to my father (Girish Haria), who has always supported my dreams. This was a level five tournament, and if I have to draw a comparison, it is like winning a Grand Slam in tennis. It has been a while since I have won an international tournament and I will celebrate the moment with my family and friends in Ahmedabad. In Melbourne, it (temperature) was nine degrees but the moment I landed in Ahmedabad, it was 40 degrees!'
Dhvajj adds, 'Once I won the semi-final against Robert Hall, the momentum was with me but facing the legendary Peter Gilchrist, a multiple-time world champion, in the final was a daunting task. It was a three-hour long final and once I started well and took a big lead (he sealed a convincing 1035–597 win), there was no looking back. I have got congratulatory messages from

They saw the live telecast and told me that I played well.'
'Happy to see school students taking up cue sports'
Talking about the growing popularity of cue sports in India, Dhvajj shares, 'I am glad to see more youngsters, including school students, taking up cue sports. When I started playing, there were just two categories-under-21 and seniors. Now, there are under-16 and under-18 categories too and there is government support. At the recent National Championships held in Indore, there were more than 1200 entries, which is an encouraging sign.

Talking about what helps him in concentrating better, Dhvajj shares, 'Meditation and regular morning walks help me stay focused. As a sportsperson, it's important to be disciplined and these activities are very helpful for achieving that. I am not very active on social media and it is a conscious choice. I am pretty old school that way.
Constantly checking Instagram takes up a lot of time.'
He adds, 'Also, physical fitness is crucial in cue sports because playing three-hour long matches can cause a lot of strain on your neck, shoulder and back. I do a lot of physio exercises to stay in good shape. While everyone appreciates when the results go your way, not many are aware of the constant hard work that an athlete puts in for years to achieve that result. All of us admire Virat Kohli's sixes and PV Sindhu's smashes, but they have followed a rigorous routine since childhood to reach that level.

PGTI kicks off today in Ludhiana: 72 players vie for ₹20-lakh prize
The fifth event of the 2025 Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) season will be played at the Imperial Golf Estate in Ludhiana from June 17 to 19. The tournament offers a prize purse of ₹20 lakh and marks the debut of professional golf and the PGTI in Ludhiana. The event will be played over three rounds (54 holes) with the cut being applied after two rounds (36 holes). The top 36 players and ties will make the cut for the third and final round. The tournament features a field of 72 players. The field will feature leading professional golfers from across India. The PGTI Order of Merit is currently being led by Rajesh Kumar Gautam of Lucknow who has a season's earnings of ₹4,29,600. The winner of this year's Order of Merit will earn an exemption on the main tour (PGTI) for the 2026 season. Amandeep Johl, CEO, PGTI, said, 'We are delighted to explore new territory this week as the PGTI makes its debut at The Imperial Golf Estate in Ludhiana. This initiative is part of our larger objective of growing the game across the country. Staging events in tier two cities will help us in further expanding the talent pool for golf and also create a wider audience and fan-base for the game.' No free swimming as NDMC pools need urgent repair
New Delhi: Unlike previous years when New Delhi Municipal Council offered free coaching to students at its three major swimming pools during the summer, the facilities cannot be accessed this year. The three prominent pools, also managed by NDMC, are located at Mandir Marg, Sarojini Nagar and Laxmibai Nagar, and each facility attracts 100 to 150 young students during the summer. According to officials, there was a desperate need for detailed repair work at these sites before opening them for students. "These facilities have not been repaired for a long time. There are broken tiles and damages at various places such as side periphery, stairs, etc. The civil department needs to carry out detailed repair work. Until the work is completed, we have decided not to open the facilities for students this year," said an NDMC official. For years, NDMC ran the facilities for free lessons for the students staying in the areas under its jurisdiction during the summer. "However, a fee of Rs 500 per month is charged from students residing outside the jurisdiction of NDMC. Unlike NDMC, Delhi Development Authority has made swimming pools accessible across various locations in the city to provide relief from the heat. The authority manages a network of 17 sports complexes featuring swimming pools for public use, and it has opened them after obtaining fresh permissions. They include swimming facilities at Saket Sports Complex, Yamuna Sports Complex, Netaji Subhash Sports Complex at Jasola, Dwarka Sports Complex Sector 11, Rohini Sports Complex, Major Dhyan Chand Sports Complex, and Hari Nagar Sports Complex. "These seasonal pools typically remain operational until the end of Sept," said an official. DDA also maintains all-weather swimming pools, such as at Siri Fort Sports Complex, which remain functional for 10 months annually—from Feb 1 to Nov 30. A maximum of 80 participants are allowed in one session at big DDA pools of Olympic size (25x50 metres) and 40 pools of small size (12.5x25 metres). The swimming coaching charges are Rs 1,250 per person per month in summer.
