John Oliver Urges ABC to Keep Doctor Odyssey, Mocks ‘Premise-Defying' Season 8 Renewal for The Rookie
John Oliver will not sit idly by and watch ABC sink Doctor Odyssey.
During Sunday's installment of Last Week Tonight, the late-night host railed against the aforementioned broadcast network for dragging its feet on a Season 2 renewal for Ryan Murphy's seafaring sudser, which stars Joshua Jackson as [checks notes] 'Doctor Hot Boat.'

'I actually agree [with President Donald Trump] that ABC should be embarrassed — not for that entirely legitimate question [about accepting a luxury Boeing 747-8 jumbo jet from the royal family of Qatar], but for the fact that, as of this taping, they still haven't renewed Doctor Odyssey for Season 2,' Oliver pointed out. 'What the f–k are you doing, ABC? It's sexy ER on a boat! It's The Pitt with sharks! It's got — and I'm not even going to try and beat their tagline on this — 'big deck energy.''
After showing his studio audience a clip from the Doctor Odyssey pilot, wherein the series' central throuple rush to the room of a cruiser with a broken penis, Oliver asked, 'How is ABC renewing shows called The Rookie and Will Trent — whose premise is apparently just, 'despite being dyslexic, he's become a Special Agent in the Georgia Bureau of Investigation' — but they haven't renewed the only show brave enough to answer the question, 'What if sick, but boat?'
'I shouldn't complain about the other shows,' Oliver continued, as he attempted to keep his composure. 'I shouldn't care that a show called and about a rookie is returning for its premise-defying eighth season, and I don't begrudge any audience members for sticking around to find out if their favorite characters will or won't Trent. All I'm saying is, ABC's The View has been on since 1997, and Doctor Hot Boat is still in limbo.
'You're a disgrace, ABC!' the HBO comedian exclaimed. 'Your network is a disaster!'
Season 1 of Doctor Odyssey has been averaging 4.8 million total viewers (with delayed playback), right on par with what Grey's Anatomy did in the Thursday hammock spot last year, and ranking No. 5 out of the 7 dramas ABC has aired this TV season. In the coveted 18-49 demo, it does not rank amongst broadcast TV's Top 20 shows.
Ahead of the series' freshman finale, TVLine asked Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich where things stand with the network's renewal/cancellation decision, and when fans might expect one. As seen with the unveiling of ABC's fall schedule, 'Doctor Odyssey is not on our schedule currently,' he answered. 'We're in talks with [series creator] Ryan [Murphy], and we really look to him about what the next chapter might be.' As of press time, a decision still has not been made.

The Cleaning Lady Ends Season 4 on an Unresolved Note — Do You Want to See a Fifth Season?
The Cleaning Lady is still awaiting word on whether it will return to Fox for a fifth season — but in the meantime, Tuesday's Season 4 conclusion sure didn't feel like a series finale. On the contrary, Thony's got more unresolved mess to clean up than ever before. The season ender was a two-hour roller coaster for Thony, who began the episode in prison for Rex Blackley's murder, but ended it as a free woman with all charges against her dropped. In the middle, she a) survived multiple beatings from Ramona Sanchez and her cronies while incarcerated, b) snuck out of prison during a riot in which Ramona and several other inmates escaped, c) avoided getting buried alive by Ramona, thanks to a last-minute assist from Fiona, and d) was reunited with sweet Luca, despite Ramona's attempt to abduct both him and Violeta and raise them as her own children. And that's to say nothing of Thony's eventful few days in jail, which included everything from healing her cellmate's arthritis to giving an entire cell block food poisoning. Our girl's been busy. Thony initially planned to finish the job by killing Ramona, calling it 'an act of compassion for the world,' but ultimately couldn't bring herself to do it. Instead, she tossed Ramona into the grave intended for herself, closed the lid, and covered the box with dirt. Thony later told Jorge that Ramona wouldn't be a problem 'ever again'… but in the closing moments, we saw Ramona regain consciousness underground, screaming as she realized she'd been buried. * Jorge lost control of the Sin Cara cartel, and he was replaced by the power-hungry Feng. Jorge and Violeta then boarded a private plane that would take them somewhere safe — a place where Jorge could also get 'what I need to crush Feng; I refuse to let him take Sin Cara away from me.' Jorge invited Thony and Luca to join him, but she insisted that she chose the cartel life, and she'll find a way to deal with Feng while Jorge's gone. * Before jetting off, Jorge gave Thony a small book of crucial information, which she was told to use as a bargaining chip with Joel Herman, now the new district attorney. ('It's what Joel needs to take down Sam Heller,' Jorge explained.) Thony did meet with Joel later on, but she gave the book of secrets to Feng instead — a record of 'dirty players and deals' kept by the former D.A., which Feng can now use to bribe and manipulate the appropriate people. In exchange for the book, Thony told Feng she wants to be made a full cartel associate. Meanwhile, in her meeting with Joel, Thony offered to make herself an informant for the D.A.'s office; she'll go back to the cartel, do her job, and report everything to Joel in order to help him prosecute a major corruption case against Sin Cara funder Sam Heller. In exchange, Joel would drop all charges against Thony and let her walk free. Both men appeared to agree to Thony's terms, but at the end of the finale, we found out what she really wants from these new arrangements. 'They all want to control me. But this puts me back in control,' she told Fiona. 'I'll let those men think that they own me, but I don't want to be a cartel associate. I don't want to be an informer. John Oliver Slams the 'Genius' Who Keeps Changing HBO Max's Name, Admonishes Parent Company Exec for Anticipating His 'Hot Take'
John Oliver didn't disappoint his corporate overlords Sunday night by addressing the recent HBO Max name reversal — the latest in a series of changes for the streaming service. During his main segment on Last Week Tonight, which was about President Donald Trump's often antagonistic relationship with the press, Oliver referred to the current administration's decision to ban the Associated Press from the Oval Office for refusing to refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the 'Gulf of America,' a move Trump made soon after taking office. He then turned to the recent decision by Warner Bros. Discovery, which owns HBO and HBO Max, where Last Week Tonight airs. Showing the various logos/names onscreen, Oliver noted: 'Sometimes, hypothetically, before we can even get used to one dumb name [HBO Go], some genius comes along and only makes it dumber [HBO Now], then somehow it gets dumber still [HBO Max], and then against all the odds, somehow it becomes even worse [Max], before inexplicably going back to the stupid thing it was before [HBO Max].' Meanwhile, Warner Bros. Discovery streaming marketing chief Shauna Spenley last week said she was anxiously awaiting Oliver's take on the streamer's name change. Oliver notoriously isn't afraid to go after whatever corporation owns his home network (from Time Warner to AT&T to Warner Bros. Discovery) on his show. 'We just cannot wait for his hot take on this whole rebrand,' Spenley told advertisers during the company's upfront presentation to advertisers last week. 'We think it's going to be pretty hot.' Oliver noted her comments, saying: 'Incidentally, only this week, my parent company apparently said they cannot wait for my hot take on this whole rebrand — believing that whatever I say about this change was going to be pretty hot, so please look me in the eyes when I say this: Fuck you, don't tell me what to do. I'm not gonna do it if you want it unless, wait, hold on, maybe you thought baiting me like that would be a good way to stop me from doing it, but on the other hand, how can a company be that smart when they're the same people that came up with so many stupid fucking names?' The show also featured a brief graphic at the end of the opening credits with the various logos the streamer has used with the caption 'Mutatis Mutandis.' Outlander's Final Season: Everything We Know So Far
Warm up those bagpipes, because Outlander is about to start playing its swan song. Starz's time-travel drama will come to a conclusion with its upcoming eighth and final season, a 10-episode run that will bring the ballad of Jamie and Claire to its resting place. Which storylines from Diana Gabaldon's books will make the cut? Which characters (aside from Himself and Herself) will be back? And when the heck will we be able to watch it?! Some context: The bulk of Season 8 filming wrapped in September 2024, though several cast members filmed reshoots shortly after. And in March 2025, series star Sam Heughan announced via Instagram that he'd just finished 'the last ADR' (aka re-recording dialogue that wasn't captured clearly during filming) on the series finale. Yes, Season 8 will be the time-travel drama's final run of episodes. Starz announced the series' ending in January 2023. 'It's been an incredible journey,' Heughan said in a video released at the time of the announcement. 'Thank you so much for being with us since Day 1,' series star Caitríona Balfe added. Since its start, Outlander has covered roughly one book in Diana Gabaldon's novel series per season. So it reasons that Season 8 would follow the events of Book 8, Written in My Own Heart's Blood. However, given that Gabladon has published Book 9 (Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone) and is working on Book 10, there's a good chance Season 8 will include storylines from all of the above. Co-showrunner Matthew B. Roberts says the guidelines for Season 8 were 'Nothing that doesn't affect Jamie and Claire gets in. It's gotta affect Jamie and Claire. All the main characters do — they're a part of it — but that's the drive. There's so many aspects. I mean, they're all big books. There's things where you kind of go over here, and you go over here — that's what makes the books so readable and fun. But when you have 10 episodes, you have to stay literally on track.' One plot that is not in the novels but will be addressed at the top of the final season: The Season 7 finale cliffhanger of whether Claire and Jamie's daughter, Faith, somehow survived what we thought was her stillbirth in Season 2. Roberts promises that fans will have that point cleared up 'visually' in the upcoming season. On the MacKenzie side of things, might Brianna and Roger have another baby in Season 8, like they do in Go Tell the Bees? 'As you know, we sometimes stick to the books, and we sometimes don't,' Skelton told TVLine coyly in February. 'But I think it would be great if they had another child. And wearing the fake pregnancy bumps is super fun, so sign me up.' Though Starz has not yet released an official cast list, we have it on good authority that Heughan, Balfe, Sophie Skelton, Richard Rankin, John Bell, Charles Vandervaart and David Berry will be back for the final season. Someone who won't return for the series' swan song is Kristen Atherton, who played Jamie's sister, Jenny, in Season 7. Though Jenny eventually joins her brother and his family in America in the novels, Roberts said time constraints meant making some tough cuts for Season 8. 'With 10 episodes,' he explained, 'there's a lot less you can do.' Along those lines, Tobias Menzies — who played Claire's husband, Frank, and his villainous forebear Jonathan 'Black Jack' Randall — also will not return, TVLine reported exclusively in March 2024. 'They're going to bring it home magnificently, I'm sure,' Menzies added. You'll be able to watch Outlander Season 8 on Starz and the Starz app. Starz has not yet released a trailer for Season 8.
