Starz's time-travel drama will come to a conclusion with its upcoming eighth and final season, a 10-episode run that will bring the ballad of Jamie and Claire to its resting place. Outlander's final season does not yet have a premiere date, but we'll be sure to update this post as soon as Starz announces one. Some context: The bulk of Season 8 filming wrapped in September 2024, though several cast members filmed reshoots shortly after. And in March 2025, series star Sam Heughan announced via Instagram that he'd just finished 'the last ADR' (aka re-recording dialogue that wasn't captured clearly during filming) on the series finale.
Yes, Season 8 will be the time-travel drama's final run of episodes. Starz announced the series' ending in January 2023. 'It's been an incredible journey,' Heughan said in a video released at the time of the announcement. 'Thank you so much for being with us since Day 1,' series star Caitríona Balfe added.
Since its start, Outlander has covered roughly one book in Diana Gabaldon's novel series per season. So it reasons that Season 8 would follow the events of Book 8, Written in My Own Heart's Blood. However, given that Gabladon has published Book 9 (Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone) and is working on Book 10, there's a good chance Season 8 will include storylines from all of the above.
Co-showrunner Matthew B. Roberts says the guidelines for Season 8 were 'Nothing that doesn't affect Jamie and Claire gets in. It's gotta affect Jamie and Claire. All the main characters do — they're a part of it — but that's the drive. There's so many aspects. I mean, they're all big books. There's things where you kind of go over here, and you go over here — that's what makes the books so readable and fun. But when you have 10 episodes, you have to stay literally on track.'
One plot that is not in the novels but will be addressed at the top of the final season: The Season 7 finale cliffhanger of whether Claire and Jamie's daughter, Faith, somehow survived what we thought was her stillbirth in Season 2. Roberts promises that fans will have that point cleared up 'visually' in the upcoming season.
On the MacKenzie side of things, might Brianna and Roger have another baby in Season 8, like they do in Go Tell the Bees? 'As you know, we sometimes stick to the books, and we sometimes don't,' Skelton told TVLine coyly in February. 'But I think it would be great if they had another child. And wearing the fake pregnancy bumps is super fun, so sign me up.'
Though Starz has not yet released an official cast list, we have it on good authority that Heughan, Balfe, Sophie Skelton, Richard Rankin, John Bell, Charles Vandervaart and David Berry will be back for the final season.
Someone who won't return for the series' swan song is Kristen Atherton, who played Jamie's sister, Jenny, in Season 7. Though Jenny eventually joins her brother and his family in America in the novels, Roberts said time constraints meant making some tough cuts for Season 8. 'With 10 episodes,' he explained, 'there's a lot less you can do.'
Along those lines, Tobias Menzies — who played Claire's husband, Frank, and his villainous forebear Jonathan 'Black Jack' Randall — also will not return, TVLine reported exclusively in March 2024. 'They're going to bring it home magnificently, I'm sure,' Menzies added.

EMERY KNOWS |Early in the episode, Emery lets Joe know that he's very aware of the youngest Stabler brother's contact with Elliot. So he makes sure Joe is present when Emery has his thug kill a man who reneged on a deal. The unspoken message: Fear my wrath. On Emery's orders, Joe trashes the place afterward, but makes sure to leave a little clue for his brother before he goes. Det. McKenna is first on the scene and finds the foil-wrapped packet of drugs Joe placed at the scene. While McKenna doesn't know the ins and out of Joe's involvement, he knows enough to call Elliot to let him know what they found. The substance is something brand new, and when Det. Tanner gets wind that McKenna gave Stabler a heads-up, she wants to know why. Oh, and she also informs him that they're now working the case together. Stabler makes reference to his confidential informant being on the inside of whatever's going down, but when she presses him for more information, he's squirrelly. Eventually he lets her know that his CI is his brother, and I'm grateful for her very important reminder that THIS IS A TERRIBLE IDEA. Law & Order: SVU Season 27: Everything We Know So Far View List WHO'S USING WHOM? | Joe calls Elliot to give him a heads-up about a big drug deal that's about to go down, but after they get off the phone, we see that Emery is forcing Joe to feed his brother misinformation. There is, indeed, a drug operation at the address Joe gives Elliot. But when the New York Police Department rolls in to shut it all down, it's not quite the huge deal Joe implied. Tanner quickly realizes that Emery used them to take out his biggest competition in selling the new drug, and as much as Elliot doesn't want to admit it, it seems like his brother is playing him. 'COME HOME' | Meanwhile, Randall finds out that Joe called Elliot — thanks, Kathleen — and storms down to the office to yell that he's having premonitions that something bad is going to happen to their little brother. Elliot lets him know that Joe is back in town, and tasks him with telling Joe to call Elliot the next time he rings Bernie's cell. Randall does as instructed, which leads to Elliot and Joe having a rooftop meet-up. Joe gives El the location where Emery is going to seal a gigantic drug deal the next day. El gives Joe a medallion — likely the same one Bunny gave him in the season premiere, no? — and says that Bernie wanted him to have it. Joe desperately wants his mother to know he's clean, but Elliot reassures him that she never knew he was using heroin in the first place. They hug before they part, with Elliot telling his brother, 'Come home.' GOODBYE, JOE | Thing is, Joe lied to Elliot to keep the cops away from where the deal is actually going down, in a whole different borough. But ANOTHER thing is, Elliot is a lot smarter than his Guy Fieri-haired sibling. And when the cops creep in with a caravan of backup, Emery figures out that Joe's new medallion has a tracker on the back of it. An incensed Emery, Joe and Emery's thug make a run for it; Elliot is desperately searching the warehouse when he gets a call from Emery. The rich Brit, who has a gun on Joe, offers a deal: 'Remove the APB on me,' which will allow him to leave town unencumbered, 'or he dies.' Stabler stammers that he'll work on the situation, but as a helicopter circles overhead, it's too late. Emery hangs up, and Stabler hears a gunshot in the vicinity soon after. He runs to find Emery gone and Joe bleeding out from a gunshot wound to the chest. 'I mailed it,' the younger Stabler gasps, blood trickling from his lips, as Elliot pulls him close and begs him to stick around because 'Mama's been waiting for you.' But things are going downhill very quickly. 'Tell her I was clean,' Joe whispers, then he's gone. Elliot puts his face very close to his little brother's and sobs. 'LET'S GO FOR A RIDE' | Later, Stabler breaks down again when another officer asks if he moved the body. 'I held him,' Elliot barely gets out, crying as he looks down at Joe's blood on his hands. SWAT: Exiles: Deacon & Victor Tan Actors React to the Spin-off Announcement
While the upcoming spin-off series, titled SWAT: Exiles, will soon usher in a new era for the fan-favorite franchise, its abrupt announcement seems to have drawn a bittersweet reaction from Jay Harrington, who played Deacon, and David Lim, who portrayed Victor Tan in the original series. The duo has come out to share their disappointment about being informed of the spin-off just two days after the premiere of the SWAT Season 8 finale. In a recent discussion, Jay Harrington, who played the role of Deacon on SWAT throughout its eight-season run, noted that the cast was completely unaware of the existence of SWAT: Exiles. While speaking with TVLine, the Better Off Ted alum revealed that 'not once' was he notified of the recently confirmed SWAT spin-off. Harrington, along with most of the rest of the show's cast, only came to know about plans for Exiles on May 18, from Hondo actor Shemar Moore. Understandably taken aback by the sudden announcement for SWAT: Exiles, Harrington stated, 'I did not have a spin-off on my bingo card, for sure.' While he admitted that the SWAT producers did not owe him anything, he did say that the studio should've let him know that they wanted a 'clean break [and to] start fresh.' 'If there was any disappointment, it's that when they announced it, we weren't mentioned at all,' Harrington added. While Harrington expressed his feelings about SWAT: Exiles in an expansive interview, his co-star, David Lim, penned a heartfelt message on his Instagram profile to do the same. After showing gratitude to fans for celebrating his eight-year stint on SWAT, Lim let his thoughts about the forthcoming spin-off be known. He wrote, 'I'd be lying if I said the rollout of the new spinoff didn't sting. It was tough to see it announced just two days after our finale—with no mention of the cast who helped build S.W.A.T. from day one. After 8 incredible seasons, it felt like we were brushed aside when there could've been a moment of reflection and recognition—for the people who built this show, and for the impact it had on so many.' Despite his criticisms of how the announcement of SWAT: Exiles was handled, Lim reiterated how proud he was of his castmates before concluding his message by noting, 'No version of this story can take that away.' Could Sydney Sweeney be a murderer, and if so, would her mother Julianne Moore even care? Such are the questions at the center of the highly-anticipated Apple Original Film 'Echo Valley,' directed by 'Beast' and 'Encounter' filmmaker Michael Pearce and written by 'Mare of Easttown' scribe Brad Inglesby. Sweeney stars as Claire, the troubled daughter of Kate (Moore), who shows up on her doorstep covered in someone else's blood. 'As Kate pieces together the shocking truth of what happened, she learns just how far a mother will go to try to save her child in this gripping tale of love, sacrifice and survival,' the logline reads. The film is set on the secluded Echo Valley Farm in Pennsylvania, with the tagline teasing that the feature is a 'heart-pounding thriller about just how far a mother will go to save her child.' 'I've kind of had firsthand experience with it. I mean, there's a manipulation underneath a lot of it. But when there was love in the air in the room, you truly still felt it. The person that they are at the core, as buried as they might be, is still there.' Director Pearce credited Sweeney for going all out for the role, saying, 'It's kind of spooky how quickly she can get to a very raw emotional place when you call 'action,' and she's just straight away exactly where the character needs to be. Which is often a very place of extreme emotional duress. Then you'd call cut and maybe change your lens, and she's very light. You'd call 'action' again, and she's straight there in a matter of seconds.' Pearce continued, 'The way that she was screaming at Julianne, I thought she was going to burst her eardrum. It was so intense. But as soon as we called 'cut,' they were just laughing. They were just so happy to get their teeth stuck into such a meaty scene.' And co-lead Moore hinted at just how twisted the film is: 'These are my favorite kinds of movies: movies about relationships,' Moore said. 'What will people do for one another? What kind of decisions do you make? How far will you go? I'm kind of curious what the reaction will be,' she says. 'There will be a sense, certainly, among parents going, like, 'well, would I do that? How far would I go?' You're left with those questions.' 'Echo Valley' premieres June 13 on Apple TV+.
