No Srimandir Daru used in carving idols of deities: Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan
After the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) submitted its inquiry report on Monday, Harichandan told mediapersons that the Daitapati Nijog secretary Ramakrushna Dasmohapatra had got the idols carved of neem wood by Bhubaneswar-based sculptor Sudarshan Maharana and no Daru was used for the purpose, as he had claimed before some news channels in West Bengal.
'It is now clear that the statements given by Dasmohapatra were complete lies. These statements had hurt the religious sentiments of all Jagannath devotees,' he said.
A team of SJTA officials including temple chief administrator Arabinda Padhee and Law secretary Manas Ranjan Barik had questioned Dasmahapatra and several other servitors of Srimandir, including the Maharana sevayats on the matter over the last three days. The SJTA has also sought an explanation from Dasmohapatra on his misleading remarks, within seven days. If his explanation is not satisfactory, the temple administration will take action against him as per the temple Act.
'Dasmohapatra, who had earlier indicated that surplus Nabakalebara Daru was used for making Digha idols, has clarified that the statement was a slip of tongue and he had no intention in saying so. Further, the Maharana sevayats (temple carpenters) said it is not technically possible to carve out three 2.5-ft idols from the surplus Daru,' the minister said.
Harichandan pointed out a mistake committed by the then state government in 1995-96 as far as keeping the surplus Daru in Srimandir's Daru Ghara.

No Aadhaar, no access to welfare schemes: officials offer to help tribal families
Following The Hindu's Spotlight report, 'An anonymous life without an Aadhaar identity' on August 17, government authorities from the Education and Tribal Departments, Aadhaar Seva Kendra, and the district administration, have reached out to NGOs to address the difficulties faced by families and children without Aadhaar or other government documents. Many tribal families in Maharashtra remain excluded from welfare schemes, schooling, health care and ration because they don't have Aadhaar cards, leaving children unable to secure school admissions or scholarships. Without an official identity, families face constant harassment, repeated rejection at government offices, and a life of invisibility, despite court rulings that essential services cannot be denied for want of Aadhaar. Aadhaar is a 12-digit individual identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India on behalf of the Government of India. The number serves as a proof of identity and address in India. The Aadhaar number remains valid for life. Many services, including banking, phone, and government departments ask for it. Rajashri Yewale, a supervisor with Pune-based Swadhar Institute for Development of Women & Children, a non-profit organisation working in slums and settlements, received a call from an Aadhaar Seva Kendra official. 'The Aadhaar card officer enquired about the children who do not go to school. He reached out to me after reading the newspaper report in The Hindu. He assured me that he will look into the matter,' Ms. Yewale said. In November 2024, the NGO prepared a list of 136 children without Aadhaar cards in various settlements and submitted it to the various government departments in the State. By August 2025, 16 children migrated with their parents. Ms. Yewale said for over one year, they had tried to address the issue by reaching out to various government departments but nothing happened. Later in the evening, the same day, NGO coordinator Kalyani Jagtap also received a call from the same officer, who sought details of the affected families and children. 'He shared his Email id and asked me to submit the list of children who require an Aadhaar card along with other government documents such as birth certificates. I have submitted a list of 120 children to him. The officer has given assurance to address it at the earliest,' she said. For every child On Monday, the NGO also received calls from the Education Department. 'The officials asked us what we needed. We told them we want not just enrolment, but also government documents created — birth certificates, Aadhaar, voter ID, and bank accounts — for every parent and child. They assured us that the children would be registered on the Maharashtra Education Department's Systematic Administrative Reforms for Achieving Learning (SARAL) portal and will be benefited by the direct beneficiary transfers that will allow them to receive uniforms, stationery, notebooks and allowances under the Right to Education Act,' Ms. Jagtap added. SARAL portal asks for every student's Aadhaar, as it helps link students to government schemes such as scholarships, free uniforms and textbooks.

After CSDS psephologist deletes X post, BJP accuses Congress of making 'baseless claims' on voter fraud
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday (August 19, 2025) accused the Congress of making 'baseless' claims about 'vote theft' and targeting the Election Commission of India in 'collusion' with a Delhi-based think tank. This came after Sanjay Kumar, a psephologist and a professor with the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), who had shared voter data from two Maharashtra Assembly seats related to last year's State election in a post on X on Sunday (August 17, 2025), subsequently deleted his post on Tuesday (August 19, 2025), apologising for posting erroneous data. The post had claimed a significant decrease in voter numbers in two Assembly seats in the State election compared to the 2024 general election, which was held nearly six months earlier. 'Fake data' Reacting sharply, BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia lashed out at Mr. Kumar for posting 'false data' which he claimed was used by the Opposition to target the EC, calling it a 'dangerous game'. 'This survey organisation [CSDS] is nothing but a puppet at the hands of leaders like Rahul Gandhi who could not win people's trust. He needs such an organisation which can provide fake data and facts so that he can make baseless allegations,' Mr. Bhatia said. 'Congress leader Pawan Khera tweets on this and then deletes. Rahul Gandhi's baseless allegations are also based on CSDS data,' he added. Deleting his post on Tuesday (August 19, 2025), Mr. Kumar wrote on X, 'I sincerely apologise for the tweets posted regarding Maharashtra elections. An error occurred while comparing the data of 2024 LS and 2024 AS. The data in the row was misread by our Data team.' The erroneous tweet has since been removed, he said, adding, 'I had no intention of dispersing any form of misinformation.'
