Gas leak investigation in Washington Heights forces buildings to evacuate
A suspected gas leak in Upper Manhattan forced dozens of people to evacuate buildings in the area. New York City firefighters and Con Edison started investigating reports of a leak Monday morning on Amsterdam Avenue between 158th Street and 159th in Washington Heights. Gas service to the area was shut down and Amsterdam was closed down to 156th Street as Con Ed crews started digging into the sidewalk to locate the source of the leak. The FDNY said approximately 50 people were evacuated from two buildings nearby as a precaution after the call came in at around 10:30 a.m. No injuries were reported. This is a developing story and will be updated.

Fire at industrial estate sparks huge 999 response as black smoke pours from building
A large industrial estate blaze has sparked a huge 999 response this afternoon. Police and multiple fire engines remain on Usworth Road in Hartlepool this afternoon (August 4) after a blaze broke out just before 3pm. According to residents, the surrounding area has been blocked off by 999 crews as plumes of black smoke continue to pour into the air. The fire which has broke out in Hartlepool. (Image: IAN SAUNDERS) Nobody is believed to be injured, as the fire service urge residents to keep doors and windows closed. A Cleveland Fire Brigade spokesperson said: "We are currently dealing with a large fire on Usworth Road in Hartlepool. "There are a number of fire engines at the scene, and our crews are working hard to bring the incident under control.
