
How Birmingham food and drink businesses adapted after Covid
If it had not been for the government's Eat Out to Help Out scheme, owner and manager Kiswar Hussain thinks things could have taken a turn for the worse. Despite his concerns, Mr Hussain still dished out more than 1,000 free meals to key workers during lockdown.
It is something he said he would do again, even though Patiala is currently barely breaking even: "Because of the cost of living, the food prices have gone really high. "It's very hard to make a margin at the moment."To try and boost sales, he has been thinking of new ways to spruce up the Stirchley-based restaurant, such as regularly changing the menu and offering free meals to children.Someone else looking at new tactics is Adrian Maxwell, the managing director of coffee machine manufacturer Fracino.
Lockdown was "decimating" for Mr Maxwell's business, with no orders coming in and everything grinding to a halt."My main concern was what we were going to do with the staff," he said."When we got the furlough announcement from the government, it was a massive relief." While Fracino managed to survive the pandemic, the Birmingham-based company has not seen any growth since. "We've noticed a decline. We're probably 15 to 20% down on where we were, and we're trying to hold our own, but it's very erratic at the moment," Mr Maxwell said.He is hoping that looking at new machine models and investing in adjacent products will turn things around.
While Covid has posed difficulties for many businesses, some have been able to use it to their advantage. Brothers Brendon and Jaydon Manders were on a lockdown walk in Quinton in 2020 when they came up with their BBQ seasonings and sauces brand, Lumberjaxe. Since then, the Halesowen-based business has made a £90,000 deal on Dragons' Den with British entrepreneur Emma Grede. But both of them believe setting the company up during Covid was key to their success."Everyone was buying barbecues because they were forced in their gardens, so there was this whole cult community online," Jaydon said.When everything started slowly opening up again, outdoor food festivals helped the business get more exposure.
Brendon thinks having to follow Covid guidelines was a blessing in disguise: "We're used to adapting, changing and, if something happens, reacting to it."It's given us a great foundation for how we run the business today."Looking back on their journey, the brothers would not go as far as to say they are grateful for the pandemic, but they recognise how it played a part in their survival."It's almost like the universe has set something up for us here," Jaydon added.

Plans to complete the redevelopment of Glasgow's second largest station have finally been unveiled - seven years after The Scotsman revealed a partially-constructed previous attempt costing up to £15 million would be torn down. Queen Street Station owner Network Rail announced on Thursday it was working on plans for new shops and offices on the 1.85 acre gap site east of the concourse along with a new entrance from North Hanover Street. It also follows the completion of a £120 million revamp of the concourse in 2020 which was extended south towards George Square along with the platforms to accommodate longer trains. However, in an extraordinary 11th hour rethink by Transport Scotland during that project in 2018, a building being constructed on the gap site was demolished after an estimated £3-15m of work because it was decided to scale up the plans. The building was due to have housed shops and space for rail staff, but Network Rail revealed it had paused the development while 'potential changes to the scope' were discussed with the Scottish Government agency. It said: 'If the discussions result in a new development, then we'd most likely have to remove the steelwork' - which is what happened. Network Rail, which is working with joint venture development partner blocwork, said the scheme would involve a 'landmark office building' and could support some 350 construction and permanent jobs. The UK Government-controlled body said the first phase would 'set a new standard for sustainable offices in the city' which could be followed by residential buildings. Aberdeen strip club to reopen after £150,000 revamp
One of Aberdeen's best-known gentlemen's clubs is to reopen next week following a major £150,000 refurbishment. Private Eyes on Chapel Street will welcome customers once again from Friday, August 29, having remained closed since the early days of Covid-19 pandemic. Originally opened in 1998, the venue was the first in what was to become a well-known chain of Private Eyes clubs operating across Scotland. While the company's Bridge Street Aberdeen location continued remained open, the Chapel Street venue was mothballed – until now. Owner Tony Cochrane, who also runs clubs in Inverness and Dundee, said the decision to reopen followed demand from long-time customers. He said: 'It was our original club – it was well-liked. 'People had fond memories of the place and kept asking when we'd bring it back. 'We decided it was time to do a proper refurb and do something a bit different.' The reopening coincides with SPE Offshore Europe, the international oil and gas exhibition starting on September 2, which typically draws thousands of delegates to the Granite City. 'Oil week is by far our busiest time,' Mr Cochrane said. 'It wasn't planned that way – but it's a good accident.' The finishing touches are now being made to the club's internal transformation, including new stages for an expanded entertainment offering. 'We went all out to make sure this is good,' said the owner. 'We're making it more of a show event.' The venue will feature 24 dancers performing on stage each evening, with continuous shows throughout the night. VIP rooms have also been added for high-end clientele. Looking ahead, the club is preparing to launch a live-streaming platform, allowing customers to watch performances remotely via pay-per-view. The digital infrastructure was developed during the pandemic and is ready to go live in the coming months. 'We want to get everything running smoothly first, then that is stage two,' Mr Cochrane added. 'In the evening there can be quiet spells, so the girls can end up sitting twiddling their fingers. 'This way they could actually do the internet – it's another way to stay one one step ahead.' Private Eyes was previously shortlisted for Best UK Club at an international industry award in Las Vegas and Mr Cochrane believes the relaunch reflects the need to change in a fast-evolving sector. 'You've got to adapt and reinvent yourself,' said club owner. 'If you stand still you die very quickly. 'Instead of throwing in the towel, we thought: let's rethink and move forward.' Mr Cochrane, also owns Club Tropicana and Sing City, which adjoin the Chapel Street venue. He says he's looking forward to seeing familiar faces back through the doors. Earlier this month, he announced plans to replace Club Tropicana in Dundee with a new LGBTQ+ venue called Rainbow Loft.

Plans to create 'train station quarter' in Scottish city centre
Network Rail, in partnership with its joint venture development partner blocwork, is working on the plans to create "new commercial office space" and "enhanced station retail space" in the 0.75 ha (1.85 acre) lot. The scheme intends to create an "enhanced Station Quarter improving the experience and station environment" for the estimated 15m million customers that currently use Glasgow Queen Street every year. The Proposal of Application Notices (PAN) submitted to Glasgow City Council outline the proposals for: a new office building a new station entrance from North Hanover Street enhanced station retail space public spaces improve connectivity from the station to the new look George Square and 'The Avenues' public realm programmes currently in development The first phase of the development will include the delivery of office space, with future phases of the project potentially seeing the addition of more office and residential buildings, according to Network Rail. Robin Dobson, group property director for Network Rail, said: 'It's an exciting time for Glasgow as the city's recovery gains momentum with ambitious transformation and public realm projects being brought forward. "Aligning with Glasgow's 2030 City Centre Strategy, the plans unlock and transform disused railway land at the heart of the city, to enhance the station and create modern, connected spaces for people to live and work. The development is a great example of public and private sector collaboration, to deliver investment and community benefit. "It is a real statement of our confidence in Glasgow and the potential for continued future growth.' The design team for this project is led by Scottish-based architects, the Comprehensive Design Partnership (CDA), in collaboration with Arup. CDA projects span across the UK including MODA Edinburgh, Printworks Manchester and Old Brewery Brighton, while Arup was involved in the recent Glasgow Queen Street station development project. The PANs also detail how blocwork and Network Rail plan to engage with the local community regarding their proposal. As part of the statutory pre-application consultation process, a public consultation event will be held in the Autum to provide information about the proposal and to invite comments from stakeholders, customers and the community.
