Commanders GM Adam Peters reportedly a tough negotiator
Don't let Adam Peters' nice-guy demeanor fool you. The second-year Washington Commanders general manager reportedly drives a hard bargain.
For the first time since Josh Harris bought the Commanders two years ago, the team is facing its first tough negotiation. And it happens to be with a player beloved by fans, coaches, and teammates: wide receiver Terry McLaurin.
McLaurin wants a new deal. The problem is that he wants to be paid as one of the best receivers in the NFL, but he'll be 30 next month. The list of wide receivers 30 or older who signed a third contract doesn't help McLaurin's case. The Commanders are more focused on paying for what they think McLaurin will be in the future, rather than what he's done for Washington in the past.
The numbers have been all over the place. McLaurin reportedly eyes the contract DK Metcalf signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers at an average annual value of $33 million as a starting point in negotiations. McLaurin and Metcalf were in the same 2019 receiver class, and McLaurin is the better player, but Metcalf is over two years younger. Washington has reportedly offered a much lower number. How much? No one knows for sure.
Back to Peters. Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports recently had some insight into Peters from another NFL executive.
'I think people are going to find out a lot about Adam Peters right now, because I do not like negotiating with him," Robinson said another NFL executive told him about Peters on Inside Coverage. "He has an edge to him that people don't understand, and they're going to see that now in this negotiation."
When this quote made its way across social media on Thursday, some fans became unnecessarily defensive of McLaurin. That's not the message Robinson was trying to convey. Essentially, what Robinson was saying is that Peters is not going to give in. He will not budge. The Commanders have a number for McLaurin, and while they are willing to raise that price to get a deal done, it will not be close to what many believe McLaurin initially asked for.
Isn't this what every Washington fan dreamed of after years of Dan Snyder?
While the Commanders should make a special case for McLaurin, they must be careful.
Robinson stated that no other team wanted to pay McLaurin $30 million or more per season. So, McLaurin will need to adjust his asking price in order to get a deal done. The clock is ticking.
As for Peters, it's good to have an adult in charge. It's also good that the Commanders support Peters and his decision-making.

Fantasy Football Video: Comparison to Jahmyr Gibbs has us thinking top-15 upside for rookie TreVeyon Henderson
The New England Patriots are looking to bust out of a rebuild that has been taking place since Tom Brady exited the franchise. Offense has been a big emphasis over the past few drafts with the Patriots looking like they've found a starting QB in Drake Maye. Might that again translate to this year with RB TreVeyon Henderson, who was selected in the second round in 2025? [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Going into fantasy football draft season, Henderson is getting plenty of hype as a rookie sleeper. We saw flashes of what could be from Henderson when he housed a kick return 100 yards for a TD in Week 1 of preseason. He was also plenty active in the passing game for New England, which is expected to rotate the rookie in with Rhamondre Stevenson in the backfield. Matt Harmon and Justin Boone discussed the situation on The Fantasy Forecast Podcast. Boone, who is a diehard Bills guy, has always refused to draft Patriots players in fantasy. This season has him rethinking his previous declaration. Boone believes that Henderson's pass-catching ability could make him a great safety valve for Maye. That type of usage reminds the Yahoo analyst of Detroit Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs in his rookie season, when he finished as the RB11 despite sharing the backfield with David Montgomery. Right now, Henderson is being drafted on Yahoo around the 75th pick on average, good for RB26 overall. Boone could see him finishing inside the top 15 at the position if all goes well and Henderson has a solid role as the passing-down back.

Bengals assessing options at safety with starter Geno Stone sidelined because of injury
CINCINNATI (AP) — After the Cincinnati Bengals secondary struggled in the preseason opener, starting safety Geno Stone learned that he has a soft tissue injury that has him out on a 'week-to-week' basis. Those recent developments gave the Bengals a lot to discuss and work on heading into their second preseason game against the Washington Commanders on Monday night. Coach Zac Taylor said that the Philadelphia Eagles' success against the Bengals in last week's preseason opener showed the Bengals defensive backs some areas to focus on going forward. Penalties from the Bengals also made a big difference last week, and Taylor wants to see those cleaned up in Washington. 'We were just in a lot of one-on-one positions where we were fingertip away a lot of times,' Taylor said. 'Continue to be competitive, continue to be detailed up on scrimmage. I think overall, operationally, there were some things on offense, defense and special teams that we've we've got to be better at. That had nothing to do with Philly, and that's, that's one of our primary focuses right now as a team, not having a joint practice this week.' Without Stone in the short term, Tycen Anderson, Daijahn Anthony and PJ Jules have been battling for first-team reps on defense. Even though the Bengals didn't utilize their safety depth last season, they only added undrafted free agents into that position group. As a result, the backups behind Stone who are now contenders for a first-team role are getting their first real chance to show what they're capable of in a starting opportunity. Anthony played some backup slot cornerback during the first two weeks last season. But after he committed a key penalty, he lost that role and didn't play much during the rest of his rookie season. He has received a fresh start in 2025 with a new defensive coordinator, and he has been Stone's primary backup as the second-team free safety. 'Safety is just slowing down for me now,' Anthony said. 'What's changed the most is that Coach Al (Golden) has given us our own freedom. He gives us the tools and played to run. Then, he gives us the opportunity to make those plays and run the show back there. That's the biggest change for me. There's not as much stress with this is exactly what we have to do.' Anderson, a fifth-round pick in 2022, has played one career defensive snap while establishing himself as the team's top special teamer. He has played in 24 total games, and Anderson has 18 total tackles in the NFL on special teams. Jules was an undrafted free agent last season who spent 2024 on the Bengals' practice squad. An interception last Sunday during practice with the second team opened some eyes and led to him getting more opportunities. 'I don't care who you are, how you got here, I'll give you the same promise my coach gave me 15 years ago,' safeties coach Jordan Kovacs said. 'The best players will play. Every spot is open. Let's go compete and let's see how good we can get. Because competition is ultimately what's going to make us better players.' Taylor also didn't rule out the Bengals adding a free-agent option at the safety position. 'That's a group that we're looking to make sure we're deep enough there, so they're gonna continue to get a lot of opportunities,' Taylor said. ___ AP NFL:

Packers announce games for all-white uniforms, throwback uniforms in 2025
The Green Bay Packers will wear their all-white uniforms for a primetime game in September and their new throwback uniforms for a noon game to open November this season at Lambeau Field. The Packers announced they will wear their "Winter Warning" white-out uniforms featuring white helmets, jerseys and pants against the Washington Commanders on Thursday, Sept. 11 and their 1923-inspired throwback uniforms -- which includes an all-new, faux-leather airbrushed helmet -- against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, Nov. 2. The Packers want attending fans to wear white to the Week 2 showdown at Lambeau Field to "create a blizzard effect in the stadium under the lights" against the Commanders. The team will also honor Sterling Sharpe, a 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, during halftime. The ceremony will include Sharpe's name being unveiled along the facade inside Lambeau Field. The Week 9 visit from the Panthers will feature the debut of the Packers' 1923 throwbacks, which include the leather-inspired helmet -- the first of its kind at the NFL level -- and blue and gold jerseys.
