Ryan Murphy's ‘Doctor Odyssey' and ‘9-1-1' Set Crossover Episode for March (EXCLUSIVE)

Athena Grant, meet Dr. Max Bankman.
On Thursday, March 20, the Ryan Murphy-created worlds of '9-1-1,' starring Angela Bassett as LAPD sergeant Grant, and 'Doctor Odyssey,' led by Joshua Jackson as on-board cruise doctor Bankman, will collide in a special crossover episode of the soapy, seafaring medical drama.

Continuing 'Doctor Odyssey's' premise of each episode being centered around a different themed cruise, the action takes place during Casino Week aboard The Odyssey, and 'unexpected guest Athena Grant suspects two passengers are targeting the ship's vault,' the logline explains. 'Enlisting Max's help, Athena raises the stakes in a dangerous game where not everyone will end up with a winning hand.'
While '9-1-1' fans might be shocked to see Bassett's Grant board a ship so soon after her and Bobby's (Peter Krause) harrowing honeymoon cruise disaster (a three-episode emergency!) in Season 7 — but both shows hail from the house of Murphy, who loves a crossover arc.
Murphy's 'American Horror Story' saw characters from various seasons of the horror anthology series appear in other installments, like Bassett's Marie Laveau from 2013's 'AHS: Coven' popping up during the 2018 'Apocalypse' run. Then, in 2021, the firefighters of '9-1-1,' the long-running drama about high-pressure experiences of first responders, headed from Los Angeles to Texas to lend a hand on '9-1-1: Lone Star.' Plus, Murphy has another '9-1-1' spinoff in the works: '9-1-1: Nashville,' nabbed a season pickup and will debut on ABC during the 2025-2026 season.
But the special episode of '9-1-1' and 'Doctor Odyssey' marks the first time that two of Murphy's multitude of shows (the prolific creator launched six shows in two weeks in 2024) that are not from the same franchise will cross paths.
'Doctor Odyssey,' which stars Jackson, Don Johnson, Phillipa Soo and Sean Teale, has been a hit for ABC since it premiered last October, directly after the Season 8 premiere of '9-1-1.' Meanwhile, '9-1-1' was the biggest broadcast program of the night, averaging 4.9 million viewers. 'Doctor Odyssey' maintained 86% of that audience, hitting 4.2 million viewers and marking ABC's best drama launch since 'Big Sky' in 2020.
'9-1-1' and 'Doctor Odyssey' air Thursdays on ABC, beginning at 8 p.m. Both series return for new episodes on March 6.

Eddie Murphy Recalls 'Clairvoyant' Girlfriend Who Predicted He'd Become Famous

Eddie Murphy says his teenage girlfriend accurately foresaw that he'd become famous. During his recent interview on Complex's 360 With Speedy, The Pickup star recalled believing that he'd be famous when he was 13 years old. But it wasn't just from Murphy's own admission: He said his then-girlfriend, Sherry Bell, was a "clairvoyant" who knew he'd become a star. "She could really, like, read stuff. She could like put her hands on stuff and see stuff with her hands," Murphy told Speedy Morman around the 1-minute mark of the video above. "She could put her hand in the newspaper and tell you the stuff in the paper," he continued. "And you could put money in her hands, she could tell you what the bill was. She could put her hand in the photo album and tell you who was on the picture." COMPLEX SHOP: Shop the brands you love, anytime and anywhere. Uncover what's next. Buy. Collect. Obsess. The actor-comedian said Bell's predication about his career arose when he was 13 or 14 years old. "She told me, 'You're going to be famous,'" Murphy said. "I was like, 'Yeah, I knew it, I knew it.'" Murphy called Bell the first person who "really solidified" that he'd make his mark in Hollywood, adding that she had a "neurological problem" that caused her to be "bedridden" throughout her 20s. "She passed away when I was doing [1996 comedy] Nutty Professor," Murphy said. "And I took care of her all the way from high school all the way up to those years when she was bedridden." Murphy, who was married to his then-wife Nicole Murphy at the time, said a strange occurrence during filming seemed to indicate that Bell had passed away. "We're shooting one big scene and all the lights go out. And the whole set is all black. All the power left," he said. "We go back to the trailer. Then on the way to the trailer, somebody came and told me, 'Hey, Sherry Bell passed away.' Lights out." Murphy's sit-down with Speedy marks the first time he's publicly talked about Bell. His movies have grossed $6.5 billion globally. Eddie Murphy Says Turning Down 'Rush Hour' for ‘Holy Man' Was a ‘No-Brainer'

Hindsight is 20/20. Eddie Murphy is among the many Hollywood stars who have passed on a role that they regret until this day. In an interview with Speedy Morman on 360 with Speedy, Murphy spoke about choosing Holy Man over the role of Detective James Carter, which ultimately went to Chris Tucker. "They came to me, and they was like, it was two scripts," he recalled. "It was like, 'It's Rush Hour, and it's going to be [an] action comedy, and you're gonna be [with] Jackie Chan. And it's action, summertime, running, and all this physical stuff." "And this other one was, 'You in a robe in Miami.' I was like, hey, hey, hey," Murphy continued, referencing his role in Holy Man. "It was a no-brainer! And we went to Miami, and made a horrendous film." COMPLEX SHOP: Shop the brands you love, anytime and anywhere. Uncover what's next. Buy. Collect. Obsess. The 64-year-old actor and comedian almost immediately walked back calling Holy Man "horrendous." The 1998 movie currently has a 12 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, so he may be onto something. Murphy also confessed to turning down the role of Hoke Colburn in Driving Miss Daisy, which earned Morgan Freeman an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Even though the part was initially developed for him, Eddie was adamant that he "wasn't doing no s**tlike that." Murphy confirmed on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon that he turned down Ghostbusters in favor of Beverly Hills Cop, and passed on Who Framed Roger Rabbit because he did not believe in the idea of pairing animation with actual people. Darren Aronofsky Tried to Stoke Rivalry Between Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis On ‘Black Swan' Set: ‘Was All in Good Fun'

'Black Swan' returns to theaters on Aug. 21 and 24, playing in Imax for the first time to celebrate fifteen years since the psychological thriller first hit cinemas. Director Darren Aronofsky recently reunited with stars Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis to reflect on the film's milestone anniversary for Vogue, and their discussion revealed that the director had tried and failed to stoke rivalry between the two stars to reflect their on-screen feud. 'My take is that I was trying to be a sneaky director and make them argue,' admitted Aronofsky, 'Mila and Natalie both realized very quickly what I was doing and made fun of me, so it quickly became a joke that we all understood. They're both very clever and were instantly privy to whatever trick I was playing.' More from Variety 'Black Swan' Getting 15th Anniversary Imax Re-Release 2025 Made in NY Awards to Honor Darren Aronofsky, Michelle Buteau, Tracy Morgan and Thomas J. O'Donnell (EXCLUSIVE) 'Fountain of Youth' Review: John Krasinski and Natalie Portman Bicker Their Way to Immortality Aronofsky's method was meant to help the actors get into character, as both play ballerinas in the film, competing for top billing in a prestigious production of 'Swan Lake.' The on-screen contention between the two devolves into a fever dream of violence, deception and abuse— both mental and physical. Behind the scenes, however, Portman and Kunis were too professional and supportive of one another to give in to Aronofsky's tactics. 'I remember being separated from Mila and that we weren't in the same space a lot when we weren't shooting,' Portman recalled, but when the director would try bating her with comments about Kunis' talent and commitment, she responded, 'She's so fucking talented and I love her so much and I'm happy she's doing a great job!' Kunis faced similar situations. She said, 'Darren would tell me, 'Nat is working really, really hard. She's not even taking Saturdays and Sundays off.' Then I would text Nat and she'd be like, '…No, I'm not?' I think that's how we figured out what Darren was up to, but it was all in good fun.' Nevertheless, both actors reflected fondly on their experience working with Aronofsky. ''Black Swan' was the first time I felt like I had a mind meld with a director, where each of us always knew exactly what to say. Every time we talked it felt like he gave me a little key that unlocked a scene for me,' said Portman. Kunis added that when journalists would ask her about Aronofsky's intensity on set, she'd respond, ''He's actually a really kind, lovely guy who took us to see 'Twilight' one time because we had the day off.' And journalists were always so disappointed that he wasn't some tortured soul who treated us like garbage.' Their collaboration paid off, as 'Black Swan' earned $329.4 million at the worldwide box office. Portman took home her first Academy Award for her performance and the film garnered four additional nominations— including best picture and best director for Aronofsky. Portman summed it up well when reflecting on her first time watching the film, calling it 'shocking and exhilarating in a really wonderful way.' Audiences will be able to relive that shock and wonder in Imax next weekend, and Aronofsky's next film, 'Caught Stealing,' will hit theaters Aug. 29.
