A nasty mystery illness left Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts nearly 20 pounds lighter and had many doubting he'd be able to make much of an impact this week for his team.
The Detroit Tigers didn't seem to notice a weaker Betts, who hit two home runs on Friday night, including a walk-off 3-run blast that lifted the Dodgers to an 8-5 victory in 10 innings. The Dodgers are 4-0.
Betts' first homer of the season broke a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning, as it barely made it over the left field fence at about 396 feet.

Closer Tanner Scott blew the save as the Tigers' Manuel Margot had a game-tying RBI single in the ninth inning. A 2-run triple from Dillon Dingler the following inning put the Tigers up 5-3.
The Dodgers' rallied quickly to tie the game on RBI hits from Michael Conforto (double) and Will Smith (single), setting the stage for Betts' heroics.

It seems like some difference-making arms could be made available, such as Tomoyuki Sugano from the Baltimore Orioles or Andrew Heaney from the Pittsburgh Pirates. And it seems they will still avoid doing so despite the persistent injuries, according to an update from Harris that many Dodgers fans will find disappointing. "Even if only half of the arms currently on the IL get back to where they were before, they could still have a pitching staff capable of contending for another World Series title," he noted. "Because of that, it seems unlikely they'll make overly aggressive moves on the trade market leading up to the July 31 deadline. ... For now, they continue to trust that pitchers such as Snell, (Tyler) Glasnow and (Shohei) Ohtani will be impact contributors for the stretch run of the season." Refusal to take an aggressive approach at the trade deadline might serve as a bummer for Dodgers fans, but it could be a necessary symptom of assembling such a deep and talented roster. Incredible Mets misplay allows Dodgers to tie game in 4-run comeback
Blowing a four-run lead to the Los Angeles Dodgers was a bad enough time for the New York Mets on Thursday. The game-tying play made it even worse. With the Mets up 5-4 in the bottom of the eighth inning, reliever Reed Garrett seemingly got a big out when Andy Pages hit an easy grounder right at third baseman Brett Baty. Dodgers catcher Will Smith had no choice but to make a break for home from third base, where he should have been tagged out. Advertisement However, Baty spiked the throw to home and catcher Francisco Alvarez couldn't get a hold of it. As the ball bounced into the air and came down, Alvarez and Garrett collided into each other in a play worthy of a "Three Stooges" episode. Had Alvarez not essentially set a basketball-style pick against Garrett after losing the ball, Smith still probably would have been out. Instead, he tied the game. It was the kind of play that harkened back to the days when the Mets inspired more mockery than fear as a large-market team. They're doing everything they can to shed that reputation under owner Steve Cohen, but plays like that can happen to any baseball team. Advertisement The inning got worse three batters later when former Mets All-Star Michael Conforto punched an RBI single into the outfield for the go-ahead run. That single was Conforto's first hit with a runner in scoring position since March 31, the Dodgers' fifth game of the season. It was his first with two outs of the entire 2025 season, which hasn't quite gone according to plan after he signed a one-year, $17 million deal to join the reigning World Series champs. He entered Thursday slashing .167/.311/.270. With the Dodgers suddenly leading, they brought in Tanner Scott, another new acquisition who has been struggling, for the ninth inning. He struck out two and allowed a single before ending the game on a Luisangel Acuña flyout. The Dodgers' win split the four-game series with the Mets and kept them in first place in the NL West at 38-25. In arguably the hardest stretch of their season — with series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Cleveland Guardians, New York Yankees and Mets — they went 9-7 despite a heavily depleted pitching staff.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Michael Conforto drove in the tiebreaking run in the Dodgers' three-run eighth inning, and Los Angeles rallied for a 6-5 victory over the New York Mets on Thursday to split the NL powers' four-game series. Conforto has struggled mightily in his first season with the Dodgers, but he drove a two-out single to left off Reed Garrett (1-2) for the Dodgers' third unearned run of the eighth. Will Smith delivered an RBI double moments earlier, and he scored the tying run when the Mets comically misplayed Andy Pages' grounder to Brett Baty at third. Mookie Betts had an RBI double and reached base four times for the Dodgers, who went 4-3 on their homestand against New York's two teams. Alex Vesia (2-0) got one out in the eighth. Tanner Scott earned his 11th save with his second straight solid performance during a rough season. Pete Alonso, Brandon Nimmo and Starling Marte hit early homers and David Peterson pitched seven effective innings of three-run ball for the Mets, who lost for only the third time in 12 games. Landon Knack couldn't escape the fourth inning for the Dodgers, allowing four hits and five walks. He has been forced into the rotation of a team with 15 pitchers making more than $100 million combined on its injured list. Key moment Smith appeared to be a sure out at the plate when he tried to score from third on Pages' short grounder — until Baty made a low throw home and catcher Francisco Alvarez couldn't field it.
