PNP: Over P43-B worth of illegal drugs seized under Marcos admin
The Philippine National Police (PNP) said Sunday it has confiscated P43.3 billion worth of illegal drugs in the first three years of the Marcos administration— three times higher than the record of the Duterte administration over the same period.
This was according to PNP spokesperson Police Brigadier General Jean Fajardo, who noted that in the first half of the Duterte administration, where the controversial war on drugs was launched, there were P14.3 billion worth of drugs seized.
'So talagang napakalaki ng diperensya dahil talagang nag-focus tayo doon sa mga high impact operation. Hindi lang ang Philippine National Police, kasama na diyan ang PDEA at NBI, dahil ang gusto natin talagang tumbukin--- sino ba? saan ba dumadaan 'yang mga malalaking shipment ng drugs?,' Fajardo said in a Super Radyo dzBB interview.
(So there is a huge difference because we really focused on the high impact operations. It's not just the Philippine National Police, but also the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency and National Bureau of Investigation because we really want to find out who are behind the big shipments of drugs and where do they enter the country.)
Aside from big time syndicates, President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. earlier said he wants law enforcers to also go after small-scale drug dealers while strictly upholding due process in its anti-drug operations.
Marcos also stressed that his administration would carry out the anti-drug campaign without resorting to killings—-a different approach from his predecessor, former president Rodrigo Duterte.
Duterte is now detained in the Scheveningen Prison in The Hague for charges of crimes against humanity for the extrajudicial killings during his administration's war on drugs.
Fajardo said the PNP will comply with the President's order and will focus again on street-level drug pushers and users.
The police official said the PNP will also implement maximum police visibility on the streets.
'Ngayon, pagtutuunan natin ng parehong focus itong mga tinatawag nating mga street-level pushers and users kasi sila 'yung nasa mga komunidad natin, sila 'yung nandoon sa mga bara-barangay na maaaring direct sources nitong mga user natin,' Fajardo added.

American nabbed for alleged repeated abuse of minor in Pampanga
An American was arrested in Angeles City, Pampanga for the alleged repeated assault of a minor for more than a year, according to a "24 Oras" report by Emil Sumangil on Friday. The Philippine National Police (PNP) had conducted a joint operation in a rental home in Angeles, Pampanga to arrest the suspect, following a rescue operation in which the victim, who is a minor, had been arrested in the same place. 'Kagagamit lang sa [biktima] ng isang foreigner. Nagkasa agad kami ng entrapment or hot pursuit operations against doon sa foreigner,' said Police Lieutenant Colonel Armelina Manalo, chief for the Luzon Field Unit of the PNP Women and Children's Protection Center (WCPC). ICC judges seek dismissal of Duterte's disqualification bid
Two judges handling the crimes against humanity case of former President Rodrigo Duterte in the International Criminal Court (ICC) have asked the tribunal to dismiss the disqualification bid against them, calling it groundless. In a 3-page document dated May 22, Judge Reine Adélaïde Sophie Alapini-Gansou and Judge María del Socorro Flores Liera stressed that they abide by their undertaking to exercise their judicial functions impartially. '[T]here are no grounds to doubt our impartiality in the current case and none of the criteria established under article 41(2) of the Rome Statute are met,' it read. 'We, as judges, act at all times in accordance with our judicial duties under the Rome Statute and kindly request the Plenary of Judges to reject the Disqualification Request,' it added. Duterte's camp previously requested the Presidency to disqualify Alpini-Gansou and Flores Liera from adjudicating on the issue of jurisdiction. The judges, however, said that when the ICC Pre-Trial Chamber 1 addressed the issue of jurisdiction in the Philippines' case, it did so in accordance with its duties, within the limits of the proceeding, and without prejudice to the future determinations of the same issue. It said that the chamber only previously considered the matter of jurisdiction in relation to the question whether there is a basis for the ICC Prosecutor to proceed with its investigation in the country. The judges said that the arguments raised by the Duterte camp were not considered by the Chamber at that time. 'Thus, it is untenable to suggest that judges cannot adjudicate a matter which is legally within their competence just because they previously issued judicial decisions at different stages of the proceedings in the same Situation on the basis of different arguments,' it read. 'As mentioned earlier, judges are professionals capable of deciding on issues before them relying solely and exclusively on the evidence and submissions adduced in the particular case,' it added. VP Sara back in Netherlands to visit dad Duterte, Imee in tow
Vice President Sara Duterte is now in the Netherlands, ahead of the impeachment trial against her. According to Maki Pulido's report in '24 Oras' on Thursday, Duterte arrived in Amsterdam on Wednesday, accompanied by Senator Imee Marcos, who will be one of the senator-judges at her trial. Her office had earlier announced her schedule this week, which included a trip to the Netherlands to once again visit her father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, who is detained at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. She is also scheduled to celebrate her 47th birthday on Saturday together with Filipino Duterte supporters in front of the ICC. While the vice president is abroad, the Senate is busy preparing for the trial, with the rooms already prepared and the robes for the senator-judges already measured. The reading of the articles of impeachment against the Vice President had originally been scheduled for June 2, when she would have still been in Europe. On Thursday, Senate President Francis "Chiz" Escudero announced that the reading has been postponed to June 11. The trial will be held at the Senate's session hall with the gallery open to the media and members of the public. The witness stand that had been used during the impeachment trial of President Joseph Estrada in 2000 has been brought out of the museum to be used again. The Senate of the 19th Congress will adjourn on June 13. The 20th Congress will then convene on July 28, the day of the President's State of the Nation Address. Senator-elect Vicente "Tito" Sotto III has questioned whether the impeachment is transferrable to the 20th Congress. In response, House prosecutor Lorenz Defensor likened the impeachment trial to a regular trial, saying, "Once a case is filed with the trial court, the judge may retire, the judge may get promoted, but the case stays on with the trial court. Hindi nadi-dismiss ang kaso just because napalitan ang mga judges [The case is not dismissed just because the judges are replaced]." For his part, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian said, 'Yung prinsipyo kasi ng Senate is a continuing body, kaya merong 12-12. Twelve ang incumbent katulad ko, may 12 na bago. So continuing body siya, so 'yang principle na 'yan, tingin ko ma-a-apply 'yan sa mga ganitong situation, tulad ng impeachment.' So it's a continuing body and that principle will apply in this kind of situation like the impeachment.) Senator Joel Villanueva also said that an impeachment court is still functional regardless if there are changes in members. He added that the vice president could question this before the Supreme Court, noting that the senators can discuss the matter next month.
