IND vs ENG 5th Test: 'Hope it doesn't come down to him' - Nasser Hussain warns England ahead of letting Chris Woakes bat
As the gripping Test series heads into its final morning, the spotlight has unexpectedly turned to
Chris Woakes
, who may yet emerge as the most crucial figure at The Oval despite a shoulder injury that's left his arm in a sling.
England closed Day 4 at 339/6, needing 35 more runs to chase down a daunting target of 374 and seal the series 3-1. India, trailing 1-2, need four more wickets, and possibly just three, if Woakes does not bat, to pull off a stunning comeback and level the contest.

'England will hope it doesn't come down to Chris Woakes. India will hope that it does,' said
Nasser Hussain
on Sky Sports Cricket, summing up the contrasting expectations ahead of Day 5.
Joe Root, however, told reporters that Woakes is ready to put his body on the line and bat if the occasion arises.
Joe Root press conference : On Mohammed Siraj fake anger, why he punched his bat, update on Woakes
Woakes, seen in his whites on Sunday despite his injury, might bat at No. 11 if needed. But concerns around his condition have evoked memories of Malcolm Marshall famously batting one-handed at Headingley.
"What you have to be careful of — there's obviously got to be a duty of care as well. If you've got one arm in a sling and you've got bouncers coming, once you send someone out there, India do what they want to win the Test match," Hussain added, referencing the high-stakes nature of a possible Woakes appearance.

Earlier on Sunday, centuries from Joe Root (105) and Harry Brook (111) put England in command. Brook, who brought up his hundred in just his 30th Test to become the fastest Englishman to 10 tons in 70 years, was dropped on 19, which proved to be a costly miss by Siraj.
But India stormed back in the final session. Brook holed out to Akash Deep, Jacob Bethell played a stroke to drag onto his stumps, and Root fell in a wicket maiden to Prasidh Krishna, who ended the day with 3/109.

After India series draw, Ben Stokes eager to get to Australia for Ashes
After an epic drawn series against India, England captain Ben Stokes said that he is eager to get to Australia to play the Ashes later in the year. Stokes was one of England's standout players during the series against India, which ended 2-2 after the visitors won the Oval Test on Monday, August 4. Stokes scored 304 runs and picked up 17 wickets in the four Tests he played, as he had to sit out of the final one at the Oval due to an injury. Speaking after the match at the press conference, the England skipper praised his team for pushing the game close against India despite the injury to Chris Woakes. advertisementStokes said that the fight shown by the team during the series gives him confidence for the Ashes series. "When one of your bowlers goes down so early in the game, the role of the other seamers changes," Stokes said."Even in the second innings, the heart and desire they showed was amazing. There were many what-ifs in the last five days, makes the game great, but all (coach) Brendon (McCullum) and I asked was to give it everything. (Josh) Tongue, (Gus) Atkinson and (Jamie) Overton showed it.""The way in which we've been able to perform throughout the series, I'm looking forward to getting to Australia and doing what we want to go out there and do."The Ashes series is all set to start in November. Stokes pays tribute to WoakesOne of the biggest moments on Day 5 was seeing Chris Woakes come out to bat with his left hand still in a sling. Stokes paid his tribute to the pacer and said that never-say-die attitude almost paid off for them in the end. 'That never-say-die, never-back-down attitude we've installed in the group nearly paid off. It was never going to be a question for him to go out there. He was in a lot of discomfort even running between the wickets."'But we've had Rishabh Pant go out to bat with a broken foot, we've had Shoaib Bashir bowling, batting and fielding with a broken finger and then we had Chris go out there and try and get his team over the line with a quite recently dislocated shoulder."Stokes said that before Woakes went out he had a chat with him, where the bowler said he wouldn't have done anything else rather than have a bat, 'Before he went out I didn't get a chance to give him a tap on the back and say: 'Go well.' Coming off it's obvious what would have been said, just: 'Great effort, unbelievable.' He just shrugged his shoulder and said: 'I wouldn't do anything else,' said Stokes. England lost the Oval Test by 6 runs. - EndsTune InMust Watch

When Mohammed Siraj 'stopped eating' biryani to represent India
Mohammed Siraj 'stopped eating' biryani (AP/AI Photo) Mohammed Siraj was the heartbeat of India's thrilling six-run win over England in the fifth Test at The Oval, and England head coach Brendon McCullum had nothing but praise for the fiery pacer's determination and match-winning effort. 'When Siraj took that final wicket, as much as we were incredibly disappointed, [I had] admiration for him and the fight he has got as a cricketer and the way he was able to do what he did,' said McCullum on Sky Sports. Bowled Over by Miya Magic: Mohammed Siraj shines brightest | IND vs ENG 5th Test The 31-year-old quick from Hyderabad bagged nine wickets in the match, including a fiery 5/104 in the final innings, and ended the series as the highest wicket-taker with 23 scalps. But Siraj's journey to becoming India's red-ball spearhead wasn't easy, and it began with sacrifices that went far beyond the cricket field. Back in 2019, the then 25-year-old revealed that he had even given up his favourite food, biryani, in pursuit of fitness and discipline. 'I have stopped eating biryani. It has become a cheat meal for me now... To be honest, if you want to represent your country, you have to quit a few things,' Siraj told TOI after a Hyderabad nets session . by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your donations can help this little boy see again clearly Donate For Health Donate Now Undo Inspired by Virat Kohli's fitness ethic and Mohammed Shami's comeback, Siraj changed everything, from diet to mindset. 'We all know about the fitness regime of Virat bhai, but the way Shami bhai has made a comeback, it is remarkable. He has become so lean and quick,' he said. Determined to break into India's elite bowling group, Siraj stayed focused on consistency. 'If I want to break into this present side, I have to be more consistent... My only aim is to work harder and win more games for Hyderabad in the Ranji Trophy,' the bowler had said back then. From giving up biryani to out-bowling England's finest at The Oval, Siraj's story is one of raw hunger, sacrifice, and grit. As McCullum summed it up perfectly: it's the fight that defines him. Chennai Grand Masters 2025: Gukesh's World Championship second Vincent Keymer in awe of India's chess talent pool
Chennai: Chess grandmasters R Praggnanandhaa, D Gukesh and Aravindh Chidambaram after being felicitated by Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin at his camp office, in Chennai. (PTI Photo) (PTI06_12_2025_000212B) Chennai: D Gukesh, the youngest world champion, is seen as a role model for prodigious chess talent who are working their way to the top. Gukesh's rapid rise over the years has positively impacted many a player, with world No. 21 Vincent Keymer being one of them. The 20-year-old Keymer, hailing from Germany, took key lessons from close quarters when he worked as a second for the 'Indian prince' before and during the World Championship late last year. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Gukesh's flexibility in his style of play has particularly caught Keymer's eye and he believes that the trait has been helping the Chennai boy to stand out in a highly-competitive arena. 'I feel that Gukesh is quite flexible in his repertoire. He can basically play whatever is given to him or he has an idea of. Of course, his fighting spirit is very good… he can find a way and understand positions that are very tough to understand. He also calculates extremely well,' said Keymer, who will fight for top honours in the Chennai Grand Masters. Exclusive | How India's World Junior Chess Champion Pranav Earned Wildcard to Grand Swiss 2025 Keymer described his stint with Gukesh as 'special'. It was the first time that I did this kind of work and it was interesting to see. I learnt quite a few things during that time. It is very tough to say what exactly translates into my play or level, but there are things that I learnt which are helpful for my own performances. All that matters is the sum of all those things,' he said. Poll Which trait of D Gukesh do you think is most impressive? Flexibility in his style of play Strong fighting spirit Exceptional calculation skills Keymer is in awe of India's enviable talent pool in the 64-square game and the backing the players receive. 'It is clear that India, if not already, is becoming the biggest nation in chess. There are so many top players, young talent. There are so many Grandmasters coming up, so it is really impressive. India can basically field three teams (in events like the Olympiad) that would belong to the top-10 of the world. Good support is being provided to chess players in India. I feel that there is more potential for it in Europe,' Keymer added. 'Goal is to qualify for Candidates': Keymer's immediate goal is to get himself into 'good shape' in the journey towards the Candidates. 'I did not play many classical tournaments in recent times. It is certainly going to be important now as Grand Swiss and World Cup act as qualifiers for the Candidates. Qualifying for the Candidates is more or less the main focus for the next few months. Obviously, it is going to be very tough, but I am going to give it my all. ' Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!
