Jr gold for Rashmika Sahgal; Manu Bhaker bags a bronze

PUNE: Left is right for Rashmika Sahgal. The left-handed shooter, who started with a right-handed grip three years ago, clinched her first international medal on Tuesday. Rashmika won gold in the junior women's 10m air pistol event at the Asian Championships in Shymkent, Kazakhstan. Paris double medallist Manu Bhaker won bronze in the women's 10m air pistol event. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! There were three Indians in the junior final, which Rashmika won with a score of 241.9. The other Indians, Vanshika Chaudhary (194.7) and Urva Chaudhary (151.9), finished fourth and sixth, respectively. "It was my first final, so I was nervous in the beginning, but I decided to focus on my target and not think about anything else," Rashmika told TOI. The 17-year-old, who started shooting three years ago in Delhi, spoke about her sporting journey. "My father is in the army so we have been to many cities, and have tried many sports including horse riding, badminton and swimming. When we came to Delhi, I tried shooting," she said. Rashmika also explained the challenges of being a left-handed shooter. "It was difficult for me, as I am a left-handed shooter. For the first five months, I shot with my left hand, using a right-handed grip," said Rashmika, a Class 12 student of Loreto Convent School. In the senior category, Manu Bhaker shot 219.7 in the final to take bronze. The gold medal went to China's Qianke Ma (243.2), while Korea's Jiin Yang secured silver with 241.6. Under Murali Sreeshankar's guidance, Shahnawaz Khan eyes bigger leaps

Shahnawaz Khan (Image credit: Athletics Federation of India) KOCHI: When 17-year-old Shahnawaz Khan crossed the 8-metre mark at the Indian Open World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze Meet in Bhubaneswar last week, Murali Sreeshankar was the first to rush and congratulate him. The milestone made Shahnawaz just the 12th Indian to breach the 8-metre barrier in men's long jump. It was a feat that barely registered with the soft-spoken teen. 'I didn't realise it was such a big deal until Sreeshankar bhaiyya hugged me,' said Shahnawaz. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'At the world level, 8m doesn't mean much. Maybe it's a big deal because I'm a junior, but for me, it felt normal.' Sreeshankar claimed gold with a leap of 8.13m, while Shahnawaz bagged silver with 8.04m. The young athlete trains under Bhupinder Singh at the SAI Centre of Excellence in Thiruvananthapuram and shares regular sessions with Sreeshankar, one of India's elite long jumpers. The fanfare notwithstanding, Shahnawaz remains focused on bigger goals. 'I want to clear 8.50m,' he told TOI, referring to the current national record of 8.42m held by Jeswin Aldrin. The qualification mark for the World Athletics Championships stands at 8.27m. His self-belief was evident even before the Bhubaneswar event. Confident of an 8-metre jump, he pinned a paper to his back marked '8+'. 'It's a habit. At the U-18 Nationals in Prayagraj, I wrote 7.90. Next time, I'll write 8.20,' he said. Shahnawaz's rise has been steady. He won gold with a 7.70m jump at the 38th National Games in February, followed by another gold at the Junior Federation Cup in June with a 7.90m effort. His physical build — muscular as well as tall — gives him explosive power at take-off, setting him apart from many of his leaner peers. A key part of his development has been training alongside Sreeshankar. 'I've learned a lot from him — runway technique, training routines, and his international experience. He's always ready to help, and even his father gives advice to our coach,' Shahnawaz said. It was Sreeshankar's guidance that helped him nail his fourth jump in Bhubaneswar after two fouls. 'He told me to control my runup, and it worked , ' said Shahnawaz, though he couldn't improve on his mark in subsequent attempts. 'I'll try to go farther in my next competition.' Off the track, the youngster faces hurdles of a different kind. 'I joined the Khelo India scheme two years ago, which provides Rs 30,000 every three months, but I haven't received it in the last six months,' Shahnawaz added, who lost his father when he was 10. Despite these setbacks, the teen's resolve remains unshaken. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!

Riku, Kuldeep set for Asia Cup action

1 2 3 4 5 6 Lucknow: Two UP players, chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav and batter Rinku Singh , have secured berths in the Indian squad for Asia Cup , to be played in UAE from Sep 8. The team was announced in Mumbai on Tuesday afternoon. Kuldeep, who was also a part of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test series in England, could not make it to the playing XI in any of the five Test matches. After the Indian Premier League in May, he was not seen in action in any official matches and now will head directly to Dubai for the Asia Cup, which will be played in T20 format. Rinku Singh has seen some action in the ongoing UPT20 League. He led the Meerut Mavericks in the inaugural match and bowled a couple of overs, taking one wicket. Talking to TOI, Kuldeep's coach Kapil Pandey said, "After the England tour he is in his home town (Kanpur) and doing a lot of net practice and playing friendly matches. He is fit and fine for the Asia Cup." "He is always a dominant force on Asian pitches and should do well again, like in the 2018 Asia Cup when he had the most wickets during the tournament. He is in form and India's number one spin bowler when playing in Asia," he said. Speaking about the squad, former India wicketkeeper Saba Karim said, "Inclusion of Shubman Gill is a good move. He has earned place in the T20 team on the sheer strength of his performance in the Test series in England. Being made the vice-captain, the team management and national selectors see him as an all format player-cum- captain." Asked about the middle order batter Rinku Singh, he said, "I'm glad he is being given another chance. The Indian team still believes in his value to the team. He bats well, has started bowling off-spin, and is an excellent fielder. You can place him anywhere in the outfield, and he has safe hands." "He has the quality to deliver a good performance," Karim told TOI on the sidelines of the UPT20 League where he is a commentator. On Kuldeep, he said, "In the Asia Cup, he will be the main bowler with Axar Patel. His wrist spinning quality was effective in every aspect. I hope he will perform well again and his contribution is so important for team India." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
