EuroMillions: Rare 'Must Be Won' rule triggered if no one wins €250m tonight
There's no end to the list of things you could buy if you scooped the jackpot but it's easier said than done. The odds of securing all five numbers plus the two lucky stars in the EuroMillions draw is, according to lottery.ie, a staggering 1 in 139,838,160.
The EuroMillions jackpot is capped at €250m and Tuesday's draw is the last chance to win before a 'Must Be Won Draw' is triggered.
If there is no winner on Tuesday the 'Must Be Won Draw' will take place on Friday June 20. A 'Must Be Won Draw' essentially means the entire €250m will be divided out amongst winners regardless of whether anyone secures five numbers and two lucky stars or not. It also means the chances of winning the jackpot are potentially slashed as someone with five numbers and one lucky star could scoop the €250m - the odds of securing five numbers and one lucky star is, according to lottery.ie, 1 in 6,991,908.
If there are no winners in this tier, the prize money will roll down to the category below and so on.
"The EuroMillions Jackpot has hit the €250 Million Jackpot cap Friday June 6," said Lottery.ie.
"That became the first draw at Cap. For each draw that the Jackpot is at Cap, any excess which would normally be allocated to the Jackpot will flow down to the next prize tier at which there are winners," they added.
The flow down works in two ways.
Firstly, on draws at the cap any excess which would normally be allocated to the Jackpot will flow down to the next prize tier at which there are winners - e.g. based on sales when the Jackpot is capped at €250 Million, the Jackpot could naturally grow to €260 Million, then the Jackpot remains capped at €250 Million but the excess €10 Million flows down to the next tier, which is 5 numbers + 1 Lucky Star. If there are no winners at the 5 numbers + 1 Lucky Star tier, the funds continue to flow down to the 5 numbers + 0 Lucky Stars tier, and so on.
Any winners(s) at that lower tier will share the excess flow-down. For example, if €10 Million flows down and there are 2 winners the 5 numbers + 1 Lucky Star tier, those players would take home an additional €5 Million each.
Secondly, on the fifth draw at cap, if there is no Jackpot winner, the entirety of the Jackpot prize fund flows down the next prize tier at which there is at least one winner. Meaning the winner(s) at the next tier share the Jackpot prize of €250 Million.
The Jackpot can remain capped at €250 Million for a total of five successive draws. On the fifth draw if there is still no Jackpot winner then the full amount, the €250 Million and any excess Jackpot value, flows down to the next prize tier that there is/are a winner(s) and so Must Be Won.
