Moo Deng turns one: Thailand's viral baby hippo gets a birthday bash fit for a star

Time of India10-07-2025
It was a special day at Thailand's Khao Kheow Open Zoo as Moo Deng, the country's most beloved pygmy hippo and social media sensation, celebrated her first birthday.
The tiny hippo, whose name translates to 'bouncing pig' in Thai, marked the occasion with her mother Jona, feasting on a colorful spread of tropical fruits carved in traditional Thai style.
Visitors flocked to the zoo—located about 100 kilometers from Bangkok—to join in the festivities, which will continue over four days.
Moo Deng shot to worldwide fame shortly after her birth on July 10, 2024, when her keeper, Atthapon Nundee, began sharing clips of her on Facebook, TikTok, and the zoo's pages. Her rosy cheeks, playful charm, and clumsy steps made her an instant favorite online, inspiring everything from memes and fan art to merchandise and even a viral song.
Moo Deng, the global icon
Since her debut, Moo Deng has become more than just an internet hit—she's a national treasure. In the past year, she has been featured in a popular Saturday Night Live skit, correctly predicted the outcome of the U.S. presidential election by choosing between two cakes, and was even honored with a special Google Doodle. A Thai music label released an upbeat song dedicated to her that quickly became an earworm for fans of all ages.

The Khao Kheow Open Zoo has seen a surge in visitors thanks to Moo Deng's fame. Attendance nearly tripled, reaching close to 600,000 people in the last three months of 2024 alone. The zoo's director, Narongwit Chodchoy, has embraced the hippo's celebrity status by launching themed merchandise, from hippo-shaped ice cream to Moo Deng souvenirs, and securing brand endorsements.
Celebration with heart—and conservation
For her birthday, Moo Deng and her 26-year-old mother were treated to a massive 20-kilogram 'cake' made entirely of fruit, lovingly prepared by the zoo's staff.
Fans could also bid on some of Moo Deng's personal items, including the plastic tub she used as a baby and a cast of her footprints. The auction raised significant funds, with one set of footprints selling for over $21,000. All proceeds will support wildlife conservation efforts.
People who cannot visit the baby hippo themselves are wishing him through their social media posts. One user wrote, "Happy 1st birthday to moo deng!!!!!!!!! It is july 10th in Thailand, where she was born and lives.
God's most beautiful creature. 1 year old!!!!!!! we love you moo."
A second user commented, "Happy 1st birthday moo Deng. we love you so much baby." Another user chimed, "The only birthday I acknowledge today is Moo Deng's 1st birthday, the people's princess, nobody else was born on the 10th of July, definitely nobody else famous (or INFAMOUS)." Clearly Moo Deng's charm is unmatchable and its fan base is ever growing.
Once a round, wobbly baby, Moo Deng is now growing into a sturdier toddler—less of a 'bouncy potato' and more of a 'trotting burrito,' as some affectionately say. But for her fans, she remains the joyful, quirky hippo who captured hearts around the globe.

'Men can impregnate any woman and run away,' says Kangana Ranaut reacting to the recent debate on live-in relationships after Disha Patani's sister Khushboo criticised Aniruddhacharya Maharaj

Kangana Ranaut who is known for her always calling spade a spade has now shared her insights on live-in relationships amidst the ongoing debate on this concept. It all began as Disha Patani 's sister Khushboo Patani reacted to Aniruddhacharaya Maharaj's viral clip. In this video, he said, "Ladke laate hain 25 saal ki ladkiyon ko, jo 4-5 jagah mooh maar ke aati hain," as he spoke about live-in relationships these days. Khushboo expressed anger towards his choice of words, thus questioning him why his remark targeted only women in live-in relationships and not men who choose the same before getting married. Amidst this ongoing discussion and debate, Kangana Ranaut has opened up on this and revealed why marriages are important. "Court says now that live-in relationships are as good as marriage. Court yehi kehta hai ke agar aap mahila ke saath sambandh rakhte hai toh aapko usko as wife samajhna padega. Yeh saare kanoon woman-friendly hi toh hai." She added, "Aaj kal log live-in relationships ke baare mein baat karte hai. But I feel marriages are very important in our society, and it is the promise that a man makes to stay loyal to his wife. I have been in relationships, and I have seen other people who indulge in such things, but I can assure you that these are not women-friendly things." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Indonesia: New Container Houses (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search Ads Search Now Undo The actress cryptically addressed Khushboo's reaction on Aniruddhacharaya Maharaj and said, "Aap santon ko gaaliyan de rahe hai, it's a cancel culture. But like an elder sister I want to say, that live-in is not a woman friendly concept." She also said, "Who's going to help you get an abortion? If you get pregnant tomorrow during a live-in relationship, who is going to take care of you? Men are hunters who can impregnate any woman and run away. No matter how much we empower ourselves or educate ourselves with books and surveys, scientifically speaking, men can compartmentalise and women can't.' Kangana explained further, "People say men are from Mars, Women are from Venus and we can be modern. But scientifically, there have been surveys. Men were asked about the list of things they would admire about women as a girlfriend and as a wife. They had different lists. But women has the same list for boyfriend and husband." '4 The People' trend - Why the film is getting love in 2025 and its cult status

(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) Two decades after its release, Jayaraj 's 2004 Malayalam film '4 The People' is enjoying an unexpected second life in 2025. Social media timelines, particularly on X, are flooded with nostalgic posts and excited rediscoveries of the vigilante thriller that once turned heads for its audacity. A 2004 film finding fresh relevance The story following four college students who take the law into their own hands to fight corruption, feels eerily relevant today, as debates over governance, accountability, and youth-led activism dominate India's political discourse. Many online users call it 'ahead of its time,' pointing to how its central message mirrors current frustrations with systemic issues. The chartbuster 'Lajjavathiye' became a cultural phenomenon, and even now, fan edits and reels featuring the song are racking up views on Instagram and YouTube. Viewers are finding that the film's combination of social commentary and youthful swagger hasn't aged — if anything, it feels more impactful in today's climate. Film buffs on platforms like IMDb praise its raw energy and note how it influenced later vigilante dramas across Indian cinema. "I believe there is an audience for a slightly more nuanced film" - Director Jayaraj Mollywood director Jayaraj is surely one of the unique filmmakers who doesn't love to remain in a comfort zone. From drama to horror, the ace director who made 'Four the People' has indeed placed his hands on every genres. In an exclusive chat with ETimes, the filmmaker said, "'I believe there is an audience for a slightly more nuanced film. Films where everything is not so obvious to you (audience), or every thought of the character is not spelled out." Talking about his film 'Oru Perumgaliyattam', Jayaraj said, "'Oru Perumgaliyattam' also goes into that category. In this (Mollywood) industry, we feel there is also space for this kind of cinema.' A cult revival The film's current wave of popularity is also thanks to accessibility. Available on Amazon Prime and YouTube, 4 The People is reaching audiences who either missed it the first time or are eager to revisit it. Regional cinema enthusiasts frequently list it alongside other iconic early-2000s films that shaped an era. This year marks the movie's 21st anniversary, and media retrospectives — along with fan campaigns — have only intensified the buzz. From memes celebrating its dialogues to posts lauding Bharath, Arun, and Jayaraj's vision, the film has transitioned from a hit of its time to a cultural reference point. In 2025, '4 The People' isn't just a film remembered fondly — it's a story reinterpreted through the lens of a generation still wrestling with the same questions it asked 21 years ago.
