16-Year-Old Nearly Dies After Desparate 2-Week Effort To Fit Into Birthday Dress
A 16-year-old girl in China was hospitalised after surviving only on vegetables and laxatives for two weeks to fit into her birthday dress, risking her life
Many young people, particularly girls, often go to great lengths to lose weight, making exercise a daily habit and experimenting with various diet trends. However, health experts have increasingly warned that no single diet works for everyone, and extreme methods can be dangerous.
One such alarming case has emerged from China, where a 16-year-old girl ended up in hospital after following a drastic diet plan that nearly cost her life. Her only goal was to fit into a new dress for her birthday.
The teenage girl, named Mei, from Hunan province in central China, narrowly escaped death. In a desperate attempt to lose weight quickly and fit into a new birthday dress, she started consuming only vegetables and laxatives. Laxatives are substances that stimulate bowel movements, and Mei assumed this would help her shed weight faster. For two weeks, she restricted herself to minimal portions of vegetables and regularly took laxatives.
Mei's extreme diet was motivated by a desire to look slim for her birthday celebration. However, after two weeks of this restrictive routine, her body began to shut down. She lost strength in her arms and legs and had difficulty breathing, prompting an emergency hospital visit.
Blood tests revealed that Mei was suffering from severe hypokalaemia – a dangerously low level of potassium in the blood. This condition, if left untreated, can lead to respiratory failure and even a sudden heart attack.
Mei was, quite literally, on the brink of cardiac arrest. She underwent a 12-hour emergency medical procedure and, fortunately, made a miraculous recovery. She has now been discharged from the hospital.
Doctors say Mei was extremely lucky to receive treatment in time. They are using her case to warn others, especially young people, about the dangers of following extreme diet plans without medical supervision.
'She treated herself really badly. She just needs to run 5km a day," one user commented on Weibo, China's version of Twitter. Another added: 'Laxatives! She's not trying to lose weight—she's trying to kill herself."

How To Adopt Korean Wellness Routines Daily For Long-Term Health And Balance
Last Updated: The Korean lifestyle emphasizes on intentional and slow living. Adopting simple practices from their wellness routines can help you lead a balanced life. Rooted in centuries-old traditions and modern self-care philosophies, Korean wellness routines offer a holistic approach to living a balanced and healthy life. From mindful eating to skincare rituals and mental well-being, here's how you can incorporate Korean wellness practices into your daily lifestyle. How To Adopt Korean Wellness Routines Daily For A Balanced Life 1. Start Your Day with Warm Barley Tea (Boricha) A staple in Korean households, boricha (roasted barley tea) is often consumed first thing in the morning. Caffeine-free and rich in antioxidants, this tea supports digestion, improves circulation, and helps detoxify the body. Swap your morning coffee with a cup of boricha for a gentle, gut-friendly start to your day. 2. Embrace Daily Skincare as a Mindful Ritual The famous Korean skincare routine isn't just about flawless skin; it's also a form of self-care. A consistent regimen of cleansing, toning, moisturising, and protecting your skin doubles as a meditative ritual. The focus on layering and hydration helps you slow down and tune in to your body's needs. 3. Eat Balanced, Plant-Forward Meals Korean meals are typically packed with fermented foods, vegetables, and balanced proportions of carbs and protein. Incorporate kimchi, seaweed, tofu, and rice into your meals for improved gut health and sustained energy. Don't forget banchan – small side dishes that encourage variety and moderation. In the Korean lifestyle, walking is a big part of daily life. Whether it's a stroll through the neighbourhood or a brisk walk in nature, staying active without strenuous workouts is key. Combine this with regular jjimjilbang (Korean spa) visits or home-based warm baths to relax your muscles and mind. 5. Practice 'Slow Living' with Intention Korean wellness emphasises slowness: doing less, but doing it better. From taking your time with meals to practising han, a quiet reflection of emotions, slowing down helps manage stress and improve emotional balance. Adopting Korean wellness routines isn't about overhauling your lifestyle overnight. Start small – swap in barley tea, tweak your meals, or take a mindful walk daily. Over time, these habits create a rhythm of care and balance that supports both physical health and mental clarity. view comments First Published: August 02, 2025, 09:53 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Drones can transform healthcare in remote areas: Arunachal minister
Itanagar, Aug 1 (PTI) Arunachal Pradesh Health and Family Welfare Minister Biyuram Wahge on Friday said that drone technology holds immense potential to revolutionise healthcare delivery in the state's remote and hilly regions, where timely access to medical aid remains a major challenge. After attending the sixth International Drone Expo at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi during the day, Wahge said he was 'truly inspired by how technology is opening new paths for better healthcare". 'Drones can play a major role in delivering medicines, vaccines, and blood samples quickly — especially in remote and hilly areas. They can also be very helpful during emergencies when every second counts," the minister said in a social media post. He highlighted that Arunachal Pradesh is already taking steps in this direction, with Tech Eagle and Redwing, two drone service providers, currently supporting the government's health outreach in difficult-to-reach locations. 'The future looks promising with tech-driven solutions," Wahge added, stressing the state's commitment to leveraging innovation to bridge healthcare gaps and improve service delivery in underserved areas. The expo showcased a wide array of drone innovations. PTI UPL UPL ACD view comments First Published: August 01, 2025, 19:00 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Out of 125 students, 104 have failed, causing a stir within the institute. This exam aims to test students' preparations before the final exam, but this time, the results were very disappointing, leaving the administration in shock.
