UGD - Coimbatore city's pipeline of woes
The Underground Drainage (UGD) project began 40 years ago - in 1983 - in the city's then 60 wards, covering a network of 52.3 km. In 2009, under a new phase of the scheme, wards 13, 18, 19, 24, 25, 27, 28, 29, 48, 55, 56, 57, and 58 were identified for expansion at ₹69.65 crore. However, work slowed after the AIADMK came to power in 2011, according to the East Zone chairman Ilakkumi Izhamselvi Karthik.
In several locations, pipelines were laid, but house service connections were not provided; in others, the work was left incomplete. Sewage treatment plants (STPs) planned at Ondipudur and Nanjundapuram also ran into legal hurdles.
The project saw a cost revision in 2024 and is now under execution by two major agencies for the Corporation.
In addition to reviving the scheme, Coimbatore Corporation is currently executing a new phase to extend UGD coverage by 1,295 km, mainly in the added areas and install four new STPs. The contracted completion date for these projects is September 2027.
Yet, the project is not on a smooth run. The prolonged execution timeline and apparent lack of coordinated planning have led to repeated digging of roads, poor-quality of re-lays, damage to utility lines, sewage backflow, and other civic issues.
In Ward 13 (near Maniakarampalayam), J.M. Basha, president of the Srinivasa Nagar Residents' Welfare Association, said that for over a year, roads had remained damaged, trenches left open, and house service connections pending. Drinking water pipelines were damaged during excavation, resulting in leaks that often took more than 10 days to locate and repair.
In Ward 92 (near Kovaipudur), a resident said that in the absence of proper sewer connections, wastewater from a few houses was discharged directly into storm water drains, creating a foul odour.
DMK councillor A. Radhakrishnan said that in localities such as Sanganoor and Ondipudur, UGD pipelines were laid more than a decade ago, but house service connections were provided only now. 'Corporation officials have no records of the old pipeline network. We face multiple issues when connections should be given to houses - there are places with no pipeline, no chamber, or clogged main lines. When connections are given, some households face sewage reversal,' he said.
For the officials, multiple field-level challenges seem to hamper re-laying works.

More kidneys needed for Rolls Royce: DMK MLA's remark sparks BJP, AIADMK outrage
Tamil Nadu BJP leader Annamalai and AIADMK General Secretary Edapadi K Palanisamy have strongly condemned DMK Manachanallur MLA Kathiravan for his controversial remarks regarding a kidney-stealing shared a video on X where Kathiravan, whose hospitals are under investigation for alleged kidney smuggling, said, 'After doctor fee and medical expenses, I may get Rs 2 to 3 lakh. Do you know the cost of my father's Rolls Royce car? It is 14.5 crore. The total operation I've done is 252. With Rs 2 lakh as profit, when will I buy Rolls Royce? I could have only bought it if I had removed all the kidneys from Thirupathur people. My only worry is that no one spoke about me saving 252 lives. No one is speaking about it.'Here is Manachanallur DMK MLA Thiru Kathiravan, boasting without a video, he compares the profit from illegal kidney operations at his Trichy hospital to the 14.5 crore price of his father's Rolls-Royce, admitting he'd need to remove all the kidneys in Thirupattur to (@annamalai_k) August 13, 2025advertisementReacting to the video, Annamalai said, 'This is not a joke. Poor weavers from Namakkal were lured, their kidneys stolen, and the MLA himself admits his hospital made at least Rs 7.5 crore from this trade. Yet, the DMK government has taken no concrete action. Has their functionary Dravida Anandan, the middleman in this kidney theft racket, even been arrested?' Edapadi K Palanisamy advised the public against visiting clinics run by DMK members. 'Don't even visit clinics run by DMK men even by mistake. You may lose your kidney. A group is prevailing which shows money to poor and is stealing organs. DMK government itself constituted a committee which investigated and discovered kidney stealing in a hospital belonging to DMK MLA. Was there action taken? NO,' he said, adding that only the license for organ transplant in the hospital was cancelled, with no arrests made.'The MLA says that for buying a Rolls Royce car, he might have to remove people's kidneys. His car is worth Rs 12 crore. He has admitted how many kidneys he needs to steal to buy the car, which is evident from the speech,' Edapadi claimed.- EndsTune InMust Watch IN THIS STORY#Tamil Nadu

AIADMK ex-MP joins rival DMK
Three-time Rajya Sabha member MP V Maitreyan on Wednesday quit AIADMK and joined the ruling DMK on Wednesday becoming the second leader who was once in the good books of J Jayalalithaa, to join her arch rival. Recently, AIADMK's Muslim face Anwar Raajhaa joined the DMK saying that the Edappadi Palaniswami-led Dravidian major, the chief opposition of Tamil Nadu, is trapped in ally BJP's hands. V Maitreyan (PTI) Maitreyan had previously left the AIADMK and joined BJP in 2023 – where he began his political career – after Jayalalithaa's death and went back to the EPS-led party in 2024. EPS appointed him as organising secretary but Maitreyan, an oncologist, had remained sidelined. Maitreyan is associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He quit the BJP and joined the AIADMK in 1999 after the national party formed an alliance with the DMK. 'The path that the AIADMK is taking isn't right. The alliance with BJP was announced by Union home minister Amit Shah, not Palaniswami,' Maitreyan said. 'They talk about a common minimum programme (CMP) which cannot work on issues such as the language policy. Delhi has the switchboard. The AIADMK leadership just does what Delhi wants them to do….The contest in the 2026 assembly is only about who will be in the second position since it is clear that the DMK will emerge victorious.' Maitreyan said his decision to join the ruling DMK was to 'guard the Tamil land, language and the state's dignity (Mann, mozhi, maanam kappom, a DMK slogan).' Maitreyan's exit comes at a time when the AIADMK and BJP are contradicting each other on forming a coalition government in Tamil Nadu. Shah has pitched for a government formed by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) if they win the 2026 elections while the AIADMK has rejected the idea since the state has never seen power sharing. Jayalalithaa had made Maitreyan her point person in Delhi for the party. He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha thrice and was the party's floor leader in the Upper House for a long time before he was sacked from the post in 2014. After Jayalalithaa's death in 2016, Maitreyan sided with expelled AIADMK leader O Panneerselvam who had officiated as chief minister thrice when Jayalalithaa had to leave the post due to legal cases or her health. After he joined the DMK in the presence of chief minister MK Stalin in the party headquarters on Wednesday, EPS released a statement expelling him from the AIADMK. Though Maitreyan's exit is unlikely to cause any significant dent to the AIADMK, ahead of the 2026 assembly elections, it is significant for the incumbent DMK that leaders of its arch rival are joining them. AIADMK govt. never hiked power tariff despite joining UDAY scheme: EPS
Leader of Opposition and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Wednesday said despite Tamil Nadu joining the Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojana (UDAY) scheme during his regime, AIADMK did not increase electricity tariff in the State till he was in power between 2017 - 2021. Mr. Palaniswami's reaction comes in the wake of charges made by Tamil Nadu's Industries Minister T.R.B. Rajaa that the existing electricity tariff hike was due to the then AIADMK government joining the Central scheme way back in 2017. As a result, the State has to witness steady increase in power tariff under the scheme. 'We joined the scheme (UDAY) after the Centre fulfilled our two conditions, such as dropping the condition to increase the electricity tariff once in three months, and farmers should not be forced to fix electricity meters to assess total power consumption by pump sets used by them,' he said. The AIADMK leader, who was here as part of his State-wide tour, said that despite joining the UDAY scheme, the AIADMK-led government never increased the electricity tariff till the party was in power in early 2021. On the other hand, the DMK government has consistently increased power tariffs for the past four years, confusing voters into thinking that the power tariff increase was due to the AIADMK, he said. Highlighting lawlessness in the State with rising crime against women, children and senior citizens, Mr. Palaniswami blamed the DMK government for not allowing Tamil Nadu police to function in a free and fair manner. As a result, criminals have lost fear of police personnel and have dared to murder them, he alleged. The former Chief Minister said that the arrest of Madurai Mayor Indrani's husband Pon Vasanth by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that is investigating the multi-crore property tax scam of the Madurai Corporation reflects the level of corruption by DMK partymen in the State.
