Nevada court apparently clears way for former Raiders coach Jon Gruden to sue NFL over emails

Independent16 hours ago
A Nevada court apparently cleared the way Monday for a 2021 lawsuit filed by former Las Vegas Raiders coach Jon Gruden to proceed against the NFL and Commissioner Roger Goodell, alleging that a 'malicious and orchestrated campaign' was used to destroy Gruden's career by leaking old emails he had sent that included racist, misogynistic and homophobic comments.
In 2022, the NFL appealed to Nevada's high court after a judge in Las Vegas rejected league bids to dismiss Gruden's claim outright or to order out-of-court talks through an arbitration process that could be overseen by Goodell.
The Nevada Supreme Court, in a 5-2 ruling, said that 'the arbitration clause in the NFL Constitution is unconscionable and does not apply to Gruden as a former employee.'
Gruden's lawsuit alleged that Goodell and the league pressured the Raiders to fire Gruden by leaking emails containing racist, sexist and homophobic comments that Gruden sent, when he was an on-air analyst at ESPN from 2011 to 2018. Gruden resigned from the Raiders in October 2021 and sued the league a month later.
The NFL declined to comment on the ruling.
Gruden's attorney did not return a phone message seeking comment.
Gruden was Raiders head coach when the team moved in 2020 to Las Vegas from Oakland, California. He's seeking monetary damages, alleging that selective disclosure of the emails and their publication by the Wall Street Journal and New York Times ruined his career and endorsement contracts.
Gruden coached the Raiders in Oakland from 1998 to 2001, then led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for seven years, winning a Super Bowl title in 2003. He spent several years as a TV analyst for ESPN before being hired by the Raiders again in 2018.
He later consulted for the New Orleans Saints in 2023. He is now a part-owner and consultant for the Nashville Kats, a team in the Arena Football One league.

4 arrests after home reportedly owned by Brad Pitt was ransacked by burglars, police say

Four people have been arrested in connection with a burglary earlier this summer at a Los Angeles home reportedly owned by actor Brad Pitt, police said Tuesday. Officers responded June 25 to a break-in at the house in LA's Los Feliz neighborhood. Police said at the time that suspects broke in through the front window, ransacked the home and fled with miscellaneous property. Detectives have made four arrests, Officer Drake Madison said Tuesday. He said the suspects' names could be released later in the day. Officials could not identify who owned or lived in the home, and no information was available on what was stolen. Pitt reportedly bought the property for $5.5 million in April 2023, according to Traded, a commercial real estate website. A representative for Pitt declined to comment Tuesday. Pitt had been out of the country in June on a globe-spanning promotional tour for his new movie, 'F1.'

Texans place TE Brevin Jordan (knee) on injured reserve

August 12 - The Houston Texans placed tight end Brevin Jordan on injured reserve Tuesday, one day after he hurt his knee in practice. Multiple media reports noted that Jordan's injury is season ending. Jordan was injured after landing awkwardly in an unsuccessful attempt to reel in a seam pass from C.J. Stroud during an 11-on-11 drill during Monday's practice. Jordan initially was able to stand before falling back to the ground and grabbing his lower leg. He was then carted off the field. Jordan saw his season come to an end in Week 2 last year after tearing his ACL in a game against the Chicago Bears. "It's tough for everybody to see Brevin going down, knowing how much work he's put in to get back to this point of playing football and how excited he was to get back to playing football," Houston head coach DeMeco Ryans told reporters on Monday. Jordan, 25, has totaled 53 catches for 532 receiving yards and five touchdowns in 36 career games (12 starts) since being selected by the Texans in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Houston has Dalton Schultz and Cade Stover atop its tight end depth chart. The Texans signed offensive tackle Conor McDermott to fill the roster spot on Tuesday. McDermott, 32, last played in 2023 with the New England Patriots. He has started 17 of the 55 games in which he has played with the Buffalo Bills, New York Jets and Patriots since being selected by New England in the sixth round of the 2017 NFL Draft. --Field Level Media
