CPI lauds Centre's stand on crude oil purchase from Russia

The Hindu7 hours ago
Communist Party of India (CPI) national Secretary K. Narayana on Friday appreciated the Indian government's firm stand on purchase of crude oil from Russia at cheaper rates despite the mounting pressure from the United States.
However, he said that while the government refines and exports this oil to foreign nations, it has failed to provide petroleum products like diesel and petrol at reduced prices to its own citizens. 'This reflects a profit-driven motive, with no regard for the hardships of the common people', he said in a release issued here, while demanding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi redirect the profits gained from refining and exporting Russian crude oil to the people by reducing fuel prices.
Thanking the Ministry of External Affairs for maintaining country's long-standing friendship with Russia, which, he said 'dated back to the Soviet era', Mr. Narayana recalled Russia's support to India during critical moments, including the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, when Soviet submarines came in support of the Indian forces.
India must defend its sovereign rights and reject the hypocritical approach of the United States, he concluded.

NSA Doval meets Russia's First Deputy Prime Minister in Moscow

Delhi/Moscow, Aug 8 (UNI) Russia's First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov held a meeting with India's National Security Advisor Ajit Kumar Doval, who is now in Moscow. The parties discussed topical issues of bilateral military-technical cooperation, as well as the implementation of joint projects in other strategic sectors, including civil aircraft manufacturing, metallurgy, and the chemical industry, the Russian embassy in India tweeted. Doval, who arrived in Russia on Wednesday, has already called on Russian president Vladimir Putin and other leaders. According to sources, Doval is visiting Russia in the run up to Putin's official trip to India later this year. His trip also coincides with US president Donald Trump imposing a further 25 percent tariff on Indian goods entering his country's market as penalty for New Delhi continuing to buy Russian oil. With the latest tariff hike, the total tariff on Indian goods reaching the US has gone up to a stiff 50 percent. BJP starts mega youth enrolment drive in UP

Lucknow: The BP has set a target of enrolling more than 16 lakh youth as party cadres in UP as it initiates the poll spadework in the run-up to the panchayat polls due next year and subsequently the high stakes 2027 UP Assembly elections. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now BJP sources said that the party assigned the task to the UP wing of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth arm of the party, which would reach out to young voters aged between 18 and 30. The morcha workers were asked to convince the youth about the policies and agenda of the party and convert them into potential cadres. The plan is proposed to be executed under the formula of 'one-booth-ten-youth'—meaning 10 young workers per booth. With UP comprising around 1.65 lakh polling booths, the strength of new workers could potentially rise by at least 16 lakhs. "A formal blueprint of the plan is scheduled to be laid out in the next few days," asserted a senior functionary in UP BJYM. During a recent organisational meeting attended by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the party leadership pressed on the need of enrolling at least 100 youth in every booth and around 15,000 youth in each assembly seat. This, experts said, was part of a booth-level micromanagement—a strategy the BJP mastered since its galactic rise under Prime Minister Narendra Modi since 2014. The focus on the 18–30 age group means tapping into first-time voters and those who may not yet have a strong political allegiance. A senior BJYM leader said that the frontal wing was asked to tap college students and young professionals showing a pro-BJP leaning. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The objective of the campaign will essentially be twofold: updating voter lists, primarily by getting the names of first-time voters added and convincing the electorate for the ambitious One Nation One Election, synchronising all elections in the country either on a single day or within a specific time frame. Experts said that the development signals the BJP's attempt at entering an early mobilisation phase in Uttar Pradesh, treating even the 2025 panchayat polls as a stepping stone while working toward the much bigger 2027 assembly elections. By turning voters into party workers, BJP aims to ensure deeper ground-level penetration and a self-sustaining grassroots machinery.

Tariff trauma: Sensex is back below 80k mark after 3 months

MUMBAI: A day after Dalal Street investors ignored the significantly higher US tariffs, the sensex slumped nearly 1% or 765 points on Friday to a three-month closing low of 79,858. It closed below the 80,000 mark for the first time since May 9 on fears of the tariffs hitting Indian companies and the economy, and due to consistent foreign fund selling. Nifty lost 233 points or 1% to close at 24,363 points on Friday. Selling in the domestic market intensified further on Friday as analysts and investors believe that once the stiff tariff penalty on Indian goods by the US comes into effect, India's growth could be hit, Prashanth Tapse of Mehta Equities said. "While inflation is likely to go up next year, the likely impact on growth due to increased tariff penalty by US govt would hit investors' sentiment badly and fuel fund outflows further. " Among the sensex stocks, Bharti Airtel was the top laggard with a 3.4% loss. Market players said a block deal had an impact on the stock price. Other top index losers were Tata Motors (-2.2%) and Kotak Bank (-2.1%). The day's selling left investors poorer by Rs 4.7 lakh crore with BSE's market cap at Rs 440.6 lakh crore. Gold Hits New High Gold futures in the US hit a record high on Friday amid uncertainty over whether country-specific US import tariffs would apply to the most commonly traded sizes of gold bars, Reuters reported. Dec US gold futures rose over 1% on Friday to hit a record $3,534 per ounce, when the Financial Times first reported the news.
