National Institute of Virology develops portable 'point-of-care' test kit for detecting Nipah virus
India will now be able to detect the
Nipah
virus within minutes as the
National Institute of Virology
(NIV) in Pune, under the Indian Council of Medical Research (
ICMR
), has developed a portable 'point-of-care' test kit for detecting the virus.
This kit can provide instant results even outside laboratory settings and will be deployed soon in high-risk areas like Kerala and West Bengal, Dr Naveen Kumar, the director of NIV, said.
"We have developed a LAMP-based portable kit for quick and reliable detection of the Nipah virus. It provides results in just a few minutes without the need for a laboratory. The kit has also been patented," Dr Kumar said.

The Nipah virus primarily spreads through fruit bats and has caused several outbreaks in India.
With a mortality rate exceeding 50 per cent, it is one of the most lethal viral diseases.
Live Events
In India, the capability to culture the Nipah virus exists only at NIV Pune, where genomic analysis, vaccine development, and drug testing are also carried out, said Dr Pragya Yadav, senior scientist at NIV.
The NIV is working with a pharma company and research partners to develop monoclonal antibodies to treat Nipah. Additionally, the institute is also working on an indigenous vaccine for the Nipah virus, which is expected to enter trial phases in the coming years.
According to data, the Nipah virus samples found in India so far belong to the 'Genotype B' category, seen in both Bangladesh and India, Dr Kumar said.
This variant spreads rapidly and causes severe symptoms, whereas the Malaysian variant (Genotype M) is comparatively less infectious.
Over the past decade, most Nipah virus cases in India have been reported from Kerala and West Bengal, he said. The NIV has set up specialised labs and monitoring systems in these states to enable early detection and containment, Dr Kumar added.
From 1998 to 2018, more than 700 cases were reported across India, Malaysia, and Bangladesh.
The first case in India was recorded in West Bengal in 2001, with a 74 per cent fatality rate. The 2007 outbreak in the same region saw a 100 per cent fatality rate.
Data shows that the first Nipah case in India emerged in 2001 in West Bengal. The state saw the second outbreak in 2007. The third major outbreak occurred in Kerala in 2018, resulting in 16 deaths. Since then, Kerala has seen many outbreaks, with 19 fatalities in total.
Dr Yadav, who has led six to seven studies on Nipah infection in India, revealed that antibody surveys found
Nipah virus antibodies
in 20 per cent of bats across nine states and one Union Territory, indicating prior exposure to the virus.

There were 50,028 suspect cases, and 244 cases were examined at POUs, with 19 cases detected in the malignant stage. "People living in rural areas are turning up in good numbers for cancer screening, given they are familiar with the healthcare personnel working in their localities. However, people residing in urban areas are reluctant to provide their details as they are mistaking that these cancer screening tests are being conducted by private hospitals and suspect misuse of data," an NCD consultant overseeing the cancer screening tests told TOI. Meanwhile, health minister Y Satya Kumar Yadav reviewed the cancer screening survey result analysis with government advisor for cancer diseases and world-renowned Oncologist Dr Nori Dattatreyudu and special chief secretary (medical and health) MT Krishna Babu on Tuesday. Dr Dattatreyudu suggested the govt to immediately issue a notification notifying cancer as a notifiable disease to maintain a reporting system to keep track of the disease trends in the state. He also suggested the govt to set up a dashboard with details on the range of cancer testing and treatment services available at both govt and private hospitals in the state. Meanwhile, Krishna Babu mentioned that the state govt is developing King George Hospital (KGH) in Visakhapatnam, TATA Trust Hospital, and govt general hospitals (GGHs) in Guntur, Kurnool, and Tirupati as main hubs for providing cancer care in the state.

Closure of Kanpur zoo extended after emu dies
Kanpur: Kanpur Zoo's closure was extended beyond the initial 42-day duration following an Emu's death after a fight with another Emu in their enclosure, on Monday. Forest ranger Naved Ikram stated that the deceased bird's samples were dispatched to IVRI Bareilly for analysis as a safety protocol. The zoo has witnessed multiple fatalities in recent past. Following the initial bird flu outbreak that claimed the life of a lion named Pataudi around six weeks ago, the zoo lost a peacock, a Brahmini duck, an owl, a hyena, and a blue bull. The reports for lion Pataudi, peacock, and Brahmini duck tested positive for bird flu; however, the reports of other animals, including a blue bull, a hyena, and Chital are yet to come. The zoo veterinarian Dr Anurag Singh explained that certain deaths are associated with breeding periods when territorial conflicts occur. The official indicated that zoo would resume operations only after receiving negative test results. "Samples of Emu are being sent to IVRI Bareilly," he said, adding "The zoo is still waiting for test results from samples of some animals sent to the IVRI Bareilly and the National Institute of High Security and Animal Diseases Centre in Bhopal. LG Approves ACB Probe Against Bharadwaj, Jain
New Delhi: Lieutenant governor VK Saxena on Tuesday gave his approval to the anti-corruption branch of Delhi govt to conduct an inquiry against former health ministers in AAP govt — Satyendar Jain and Saurabh Bharadwaj — in a case related to the construction and upgrade of hospitals. The inquiry was ordered on a complaint by BJP's Vijender Gupta in Aug 2024, alleging "inexplicable delays and astronomical cost overruns indicating a large scale of fund siphoning" in 24 hospital projects, including 11 greenfield and 13 brownfield, approved for a total cost of Rs 5,590 crore. The complainant alleged that seven ICU hospitals with a total bed capacity of 6,800 were sanctioned at a cost of Rs 1,125 crore for construction using pre-engineered structures within six months from Sept 2021, but only 50% of the work was completed in three years and Rs 800 crore was spent. You Can Also Check: Delhi AQI | Weather in Delhi | Bank Holidays in Delhi | Public Holidays in Delhi It was further alleged that a new block in Lok Nayak Hospital was sanctioned for Rs 465 crore, but the cost increased to Rs 1,125 crore in just four years. Of 94 polyclinics sanctioned by the previous govt at a cost of Rs 168 crore, only 52 were built at an escalated cost of Rs 220 crore, the complaint added. The BJP functionary also alleged deliberate stalling of the Health Information Management System and claimed that the ministers rejected "cost-effective solutions like NIC's e-hospital system." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending Local Enterprise Accounting Software [Click Here] Accounting ERP Click Here Undo The LG office, in a statement, said the prima facie perusal of the complaint by the ACB found "consistent inflating" of project costs, deliberate delays by the department, rejection of cost-effective solutions, misallocation of funds and creation of idle assets. It termed these as "tactics and patterns of misconduct and corrupt activities," which resulted in a huge loss to the govt exchequer. The ACB moved to the directorate of vigilance for prior approval under section 17A of the Prevention of Corruption Act to probe against Bharadwaj and Jain, which was forwarded to the health and family welfare department and Public Works Department for comments. While the health and family welfare department said it had no objection to the inquiry, PWD also recommended the investigation of ICU hospitals, polyclinics and other projects; identification of instances of corruption, irregularities, and violation of laws and rules; and fixing of responsibility for wrongdoing, if any. Forwarding the ACB's proposal along with the comments of the two departments to LG for the grant of sanction for investigation, the directorate of vigilance observed that the construction of hospitals was not completed in the stipulated time due to upgradation in specifications and facilities beyond the original provision after the award of work. It added that due diligence in estimate preparation and planning was not done accurately, resulting in an increase in cost beyond the original sanctioned amount, and escalation of arbitration costs resulted in an unnecessary burden on the govt exchequer. "The administrative department has failed to acknowledge some aspects and there can be some hidden facts and evidence in the matter that attracts an inquiry... to unearth the lapses… an in-depth inquiry is required," the directorate of vigilance observed on the file.
