Outstanding tahfiz students to receive full scholarships

The Sun17-05-2025

MELAKA: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has assured that outstanding tahfiz students who excel in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination will be awarded full scholarships should they pursue higher education at Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) and Universiti Poly-Tech MARA (UPTM).
Ahmad Zahid said he would soon hold discussions with Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki to realise this initiative.
'This 100 per cent scholarship is already a practice under MARA's Education Institutions (IPMA) for top-performing students, and this year, we will prioritise tahfiz school students for admission to UniKL and UPTM.
'These students are not only 'huffaz' (memorisers of the Quran) but will also go on to become professionals in their respective fields after graduation,' he said when met by reporters at the 2025 Huffaz Graduation and Ulul Albab excellence appreciation ceremony at Sekolah Menengah Imtiaz Ulul Albab Melaka here today.
Also present was chairman of the school's board of governors, Prof Datuk Dr Mizan Hitam, who is also a member of the Melaka Islamic Religious Council (MAIM).
A total of 82 students completed the memorisation of all 30 juzuk (chapters) of the Quran throughout 2024, while 46 students received SPM 2024 excellence awards during the ceremony.
On the upcoming National Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Day 2025, to be held at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) from June 11 to 13, Ahmad Zahid said the event would feature new and exciting elements this year.
He said these elements would include electric vehicles (EV), information technology (IT) and eSports.
'We're opening the doors wide for prospective students and participants to explore what TVET institutions across the country have to offer through exhibitions that showcase opportunities available to them once they enrol.
'More than that, they'll get a glimpse of the career prospects and salary scales that await them upon graduating from these institutions,' he added.

M'sia is first in Asean to offer TVET accreditation

Future readiness: Ahmad Zahid speaking during a press conference at the Asean TVET Council 4th Regional Policy Dialogue. — Bernama MELAKA: Malaysia has become the first Asean country to offer accreditation recognition for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), marking a major step forward in harmonising skills certification across member nations, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The Deputy Prime Minister said the initiative was agreed upon during a meeting with ministers and senior officials from the region, aimed at aligning and coordinating accreditation standards. 'We have held meetings with ministers and senior officials from all Asean member states to ensure that accreditation for the TVET industry can be standardised and we have reached a consensus. 'Malaysia will take the lead as the first nation to offer this form of accreditation for acceptance throughout Asean,' he told a press conference at the Asean TVET Council 4th Regional Policy Dialogue yesterday. Ahmad Zahid said the government is currently aligning TVET courses with the evolving needs of industry players to ensure their continued relevance and to make them a preferred option for students pursuing higher education. 'We hope this will continue to shift the mindset of parents, who previously regarded TVET courses as a last resort for their children,' he said. Earlier in his speech, Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Rural and Regional Development Minister touched on the need for Asean to bridge the skills gap by promoting industry-driven, demand-based training programmes. He emphasised the importance of shaping a regional talent pipeline aligned with the needs of factories, plantations and emerging green industries. To achieve this, he said, industries must co-develop training modules, share apprenticeship opportunities and open up cross-border job prospects. 'We must also develop TVET as a comprehensive ecosystem by aligning education, industry, infrastructure, certification and digital access, all guided by data,' he said. As Asean Chair this year, Ahmad Zahid reiterated Malaysia's readiness to coordinate and lead the way. 'We propose the formalisation of Malaysia as the Asean TVET certification and excellence hub. We look forward to the full support of all member states in making this a shared regional legacy,' he said. He added that TVET is no longer peripheral but is central to national economic strategies. 'In this global race for relevance, skills are the new currency. Malaysia is not only championing skills development but also laying the foundation for Asean to emerge as a TVET powerhouse. 'Let us work together to ensure TVET remains accessible, relevant and future-proof for all. Let us commit to building an Asean where no talent is left untapped and no community left behind,' he said. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will officiate the National TVET Day 2025 celebration today.

MARA allocates RM10m for MotoExpert Pprogramme

KUALA LUMPUR: Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) has allocated RM10 million to empower Bumiputera entrepreneurs in the motorcycle maintenance and repair sector through the MARA-Petronas Automotive Entrepreneur Development (PUMP) MotoExpert Programme. Its chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the allocation would enable 30 motorcycle workshop owners targeted this year to receive business financing facilities of up to RM300,000 each. According to him, MARA was also offering RM1 million for structured technical training, in addition to rebranding support and financing facilities for selected entrepreneurs. 'Entrepreneurs will also receive support in terms of spare parts supply, improving the image of their premises and developing a more efficient and competitive workshop operating system. 'MARA will continuously monitor the programme, as it is not merely about providing financing but also involves structured training and ensuring integration with the supply chain network,' he told reporters after launching the programme here today. Meanwhile, MARA, in a statement, said PETRONAS Lubricants Marketing Malaysia Sdn Bhd (PLMM) would supply PETRONAS Sprinta brand lubricant products directly to MotoExpert workshops without involving middlemen, thereby enabling entrepreneurs to enjoy higher profit margins. 'PLMM will also assist entrepreneurs in marketing, technical training and fostering collaboration with external industry players,' it said. The programme is open to graduates of MARA's Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions or other recognised institutions who have operated a motorcycle workshop for at least six months, with annual sales exceeding RM360,000, subject to an interview-based selection.
