You can get three Warhammer games for free right now
Several new Warhammer games have been revealed in a showcase, including a throwback shooter which is entirely free.
A slew of new games were announced as part of the Warhammer Skulls Showcase this week, but the Warhammer celebrations continue beyond the presentation.
In the showcase, Warhammer 40k: Boltgun 2 was revealed, a sequel to developer Auroch Digital's 2023 retro shooter. It's set to be released across Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC sometime in 2026.
As an extra surprise, Boltgun fans were treated to another announcement in the form of spin-off Warhammer 40k: Boltgun – Words Of Vengeance, a 'first-person typing' shooter which is completely free on Steam.
The shooter is basically an alternative take on Boltgun where you type out randomised words to kill the enemy hordes. You play as Malum Caedo, who is on a mission to 'cleanse Forge World Graia of cultists, traitors, and Chaos daemons that threaten to overun it'.
This isn't the only Warhammer game which is currently free. Warhammer 40k: Gladius – Relics Of War is free to keep on Steam if you download it before Monday, May 26 at 6pm BST. This is a turn-based strategy game developed by Proxy Studios which originally came out in 2018.
Meanwhile, 1999's Warhammer 40k: Rites Of War is free on GOG until Thursday, May 29. This is another turn-based strategy title, which was re-released in 2015.
While you can download all these games for free and keep them, if you have some spare time over the weekend, you can play 2018's Warhammer 40k: Mechanicus for the next three days for free on Steam. A sequel is currently in development at Bulwark Studios.
If you're not a PC player, there are heavy discounts on other Warhammer games across Xbox and PlayStation, although none of them are free unfortunately.
Along with the aforementioned Warhammer 40k: Boltgun 2 and Words Of Vengeance, there were several other announcements at the showcase.
Developer Owlcat revealed Warhammer 40k: Dark Heresy, a narrative-driven tactical role-playing game which features 'intricate investigations' and player choices that 'carry grave consequences'. It is set to be released on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC at an unspecified future date.
Owlcat also announced its second expansion for Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader, titled Lex Imperialis, will launch on June 24. A second season pass is also in development with two additional 15-hour expansions. More Trending
Elsewhere on the DLC front, Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2 will soon receive a new PvE Siege mode, where three players must survive and defend a fortress against waves of enemy hordes. It will be playable on Steam via Saber Interactive's public test server from June 4, and will roll out across all platforms as part of a free update on June 26.
For fans of the original Space Marine, a Master Crafted Edition re-release is set to launch on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and Game Pass on June 10, 2025. This edition, described as a 'thoughtful restoration' of the 2011 original, includes 4K support, revamped controls, improved visuals, and all previously released DLC.
Relic Entertainment's real-time strategy game, Warhammer 40k: Dawn Of War, is also getting a modern revamp via a new Definitive Edition, which includes the base game along with all previous expansions. However, a release date is yet to be announced.

PS5 State Of Play: Everything announced from Nioh 3 to Pragmata
Sony's State Of Play may have lacked first-party games but there were plenty of surprises, between a new Lumines and a remaster of Final Fantasy Tactics. While State Of Play presentations are usually headlined by a first-party title from Sony, the company's latest showcase took a different approach. Some titles from PlayStation Studios got a mention, between a brief look at Ghost of Yōtei and new levels in Astro Bot, but the big closing moment belonged to Sony's collaboration with Guilty Gear creators Arc System Works on a new Marvel fighting game. While it is technically a PlayStation Studios production, it's not exactly the new God Of War spin-off some expected. Elsewhere, the other big reveal was perhaps the new James Bond game from Hitman developer IO Interactive, with a youthful, fresh-faced 007. It may have lacked a surprise from one of Sony's big names, but the rest of the presentation was filled with some pretty great announcements. You can check out a rundown of the highlights below. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. The creators behind Tetris Effect and Rez Infinite opened the show with another entry in the Lumines puzzle game series, titled Lumines Arise. The game is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 and PC in autumn 2025, with optional PSVR2 and PC VR support. A free single-player and multiplayer demo is planned for the summer. This is the first entry in the series since 2018's Lumines Remastered, which was also developed by Enhance Games. Capcom's sci-fi action title was originally unveiled back in 2020, but it was delayed indefinitely in 2023. Two years later, however, and it's reappeared in pretty promising shape. The gameplay looks somewhere between Vanquish and Astral Chain, with a promised 'two-in-one twist of action and strategy' as a young girl named Dianna sits on your back and throws out assist attacks during battles. It's set to be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC in 2026. Japanese developer Goichi Suda, aka Suda51, revealed his new 'ultra-violent science-fiction' game, Romeo Is A Dead Man. The opening of the trailer sports a cel-shaded comic book style, but the gameplay appears to be more visually grounded, albeit with the bloody spectacle you'd expect from the creator of No More Heroes. You play as Romeo Stargazer, an FBI investigator who hunts wanted criminals across space. The game is set to launch in 2026 on PlayStation 5. Konami's next mainline instalment in the Silent Hill franchise, Silent Hill f, received a creepy new trailer, which showed off some of the spectacularly messed up monster designs. The trailer also confirmed a September 25, 2025 release date across PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S. It might be just before the Halloween season, but this looks set to haunt you for weeks. This long-rumoured remaster was finally revealed, with the name of Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles. This is a remaster of the original PlayStation game from 1997, which wasn't released in Europe until the 2007 PSP port, The War Of The Lions. This includes the original game with the War Of The Lions translation, along with a new enhanced version with fully voiced dialogue, a renewed interface, and other improvements. It's set to be released on September 30, 2025 on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Switch, Switch 2, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The Bloodstained saga continues with this new 2.5D side-scrolling action role-player, which is set in the same world as Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night. The new Ethereal Castle map is described as being the largest yet, and the gameplay hinges around swapping between the two protagonists, Alex and Leo. While you directly control one, the other assists in combat, and you can switch between the two at the press of a button. Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement is set to launch in 2026 on PlayStation 5. Digital Eclipse, the studio known for retro gaming compilations like Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration, are back with a new Mortal Kombat retrospective. The collection boasts over 20 different playable versions of the classic games, across arcade, console, and handheld entries. A bunch of these titles come with modern enhancements too, including online play with rollback netcode. It's set to be released on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, Switch, and PC in 2025. One of the only VR games at the showcase was Thief VR: Legacy Of Shadow, which is set to launch across PSVR2, PC VR, and Meta Quest next year. This is the first Thief game in over a decade, and it comes with a new protagonist called Magpie, who is described a 'cunning thief orphaned by Northcrest's brutality and shaped by the streets'. It's being developed by Vertigo Games and Maze Theory, in collaboration with Eidos-Montreal. Five years after the last instalment, Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja officially announced Nioh 3 and there's a limited time demo available right now until June 18 on PlayStation 5. More Trending This sequel, which is slated for next year, features two combat styles between Samurai and Ninja. The former is similar to the Nioh combat seen in past games, while the Ninja style serves up quick movements, aerial actions, Ninjitsu techniques, and other abilities. While these were the main highlights, there were several other smaller announcements, with new trailers for Sea Of Thieves-like Sea Remnants, Tides Of Tomorrow from the creators of Road 96, and Sword Of The Sea from the team behind The Pathless. There were release dates for several indie titles too, with Baby Steps slated for September 8, Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound arriving on July 31, and survival climber Cairn planned for November 5, with a demo available now. As for Ghost of Yōtei, Sony announced it will offer a gameplay deep dive on the sequel in July, ahead of its launch on October 2, 2025. Email gamecentral@ leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter. PS5 exclusive Marvel fighting game coming from Guilty Gear creators
Sony's big State Of Play surprise was Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, a new superhero fighting game from Arc System Works. While rumours were rampant about a new God Of War spin-off and a reveal for Resident Evil 9, Sony closed its State Of Play presentation with something completely unexpected. Developed by Guilty Gear and Dragon Ball FighterZ creators Arc System Works, in collaboration with Marvel Games and PlayStation Studios, Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a 4v4 tag team fighter which puts a distinctly Japanese spin on its famed superheroes. As seen in the trailer, confirmed characters so far include Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Doctor Doom, Storm, Ms. Marvel, Star-Lord, and Ghost Rider (Robbie Reyes), all with pretty incredible anime-inspired designs. While past Marvel fighting games like Marvel Vs. Capcom have sported 3v3 match-ups, the unique hook here is the jump to 4v4. However, as noted in a Marvel blog post about the game, this apparently doesn't mean you'll have to master four characters to have a fighting chance, with the system promising to be flexible to your playstyle. Michael Francisco, senior product development manager at Marvel Games, said: 'Learning four characters is extremely daunting, but the team at Arc System Works has found a way to design a system that adapts to your playstyle. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. 'So you could either duke it out as just the leader and three assists, or you can tag in your assist to swap the leader and change the match-up on the fly.' How this works in practice remains to be seen, but it certainly looks impressive, with all the flashy animation and anime stylings developer Arc System Works is known for. More Trending It was stated that more characters will be added later (c'mon Squirrel Girl!) and revealed in the 'coming months' but whether they'd be part of the starting line-up or something available only as DLC remains to be seen. Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls ('tōkon' translates to 'fighting spirit' or basically someone that's good at fighting) is set to be released on PlayStation 5 and PC in 2026. Normally Sony doesn't release console exclusives on PC straight away, but whether this is the start of a new policy, or just a reflection that it's not made by an internal studio, is unclear. Elsewhere in the State Of Play, Sony announced its very first fight stick for PlayStation 5 and PC called Project Defiant, which is set to launch sometime in 2026. Nintendo Switch 2 will outsell all PC handhelds in 2025 claims report
An analyst firm has predicted the Nintendo Switch 2 will sell 13 million consoles this year, double the sales of the entire PC handheld market. The Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to be a big success based on pre-order numbers, but many analysts are even more optimistic about its chances than Nintendo themselves. According to analyst group Ampere, the Switch 2 will surpass 13 million consoles sold in 2025. For comparison, the original Switch sold just over 15 million consoles within its first fiscal year, but this 13 million number covers just the next six months. The original Switch launched in March 2017, so based on these projections, it's possible the Switch 2 could surpass the original console's numbers by the end of the current fiscal year (end of March 2026), despite having three months less time on the market. While companies like Microsoft are making moves to enter the PC gaming handheld space, it's noted that these projected 13 million sales for the Switch 2 are double that market's overall sales. A report earlier this year found the Steam Deck, Asus ROG Ally, Lenovo Legion Go, and the MSI Claw have collectively shipped just under six million units – the Steam Deck is the lion's share of that with around 4 million sales. According to Ampere (via The Game Business), 56% of Steam Deck owners use a Switch, while only 1.3% of Switch owners 'consider Steam Deck to be their primary console'. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. While this isn't exactly surprising, considering the Steam Deck has always been a niche device you can't actually buy in stores, it's a reminder of how the Switch and the Switch 2 really have no equal competitors in the handheld arena. Elsewhere, Ampire predicts the combined active install base of Switch and Switch 2 will reach 130 million by 2027. More Trending As for Switch 2 sales, the console is expected to sell over 100 million units by the end of 2030. At the time of writing, after eight years on the market, the original Switch has surpassed 152.12 million sales. Last month, Nintendo said it was aiming to sell 15 million Switch 2 consoles by the end of the 2026 fiscal year. This lower than expected estimate was likely adjusted due to the US tariffs, and it's still unclear whether these will have a significant impact in the months to come. The Switch 2 is set to launch on June 5, with Mario Kart World, Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour, and Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition leading the launch line-up.
