Warhammer Skulls Showcase Unveils Retro FPS Sequel 'Boltgun 2' And Free Typing Game Spin-Off
It's time to grab your chainswords and purge the heretics, as the Warhammer Skulls showcase last week has revealed a host of Warhammer 40K video games in store, including boomer-shooter sequel Boltgun 2 , tactical RPG Dark Heresy , a few classic game remasters and a free Boltgun typing spin-off. Kicking things off, Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 , the sequel to developer Auroch Digital's 2023 retro FPS shooter, is heading to the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC sometime in 2026, bringing more old-school shooting action in a single-player campaign that picks off right after the events of the original, promising new locations, weapons and enemies like Bloodletters and Juggernauts. News of a sequel might be enough to excite fans, but Auroch Digital has gone one step further with the release of a typing game spin-off, Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun – Words of Vengeance , a free-to-play 'first-person typing game' where instead of pointing and shooting, players need to type out words on the screen to defeat foes, with a range of randomised words and phrases from Warhammer 40K lore. Best of all, the game is available to download right now on Steam. The Boltgun series wasn't the only Warhammer 40K franchise spotlighted at the showcase, as developer Owlcat, known for its Pathfinder series and Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader , also announced its upcoming tactical RPG Warhammer 40000: Dark Heresy , a narrative-driven turn-based adventure set to feature 'intricate investigations' and 'choices that carry grave consequences'. The game will be heading to the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC at an undetermined date. That's not even it, as fans of classic Warhammer games are in for a treat, following the announcement of two titles getting the remaster treatment: Dawn of War and Space Marine . The former, developed by Relic Entertainment, will see a modern makeover in the form of a Definitive Edition, not only sprucing up the 2004 RTS with 4K resolution support and upscaled textures, but also bundling all three expansions – Winter Assault , Dark Crusade . Although the game doesn't have a release date yet, it will be heading to PC via Steam and GOG. Finally, Relic's 2011 third-person shooter Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine is also getting an enhanced Master Crafted Edition by developer SneakyBox. This updated version will feature '4K resolution, modernised controls, an interface overhaul, improved character models and remastered audio', and will land on the Xbox Series X|S, PC and Game Pass on 10 June 2025. You can get three Warhammer games for free right now
Several new Warhammer games have been revealed in a showcase, including a throwback shooter which is entirely free. A slew of new games were announced as part of the Warhammer Skulls Showcase this week, but the Warhammer celebrations continue beyond the presentation. In the showcase, Warhammer 40k: Boltgun 2 was revealed, a sequel to developer Auroch Digital's 2023 retro shooter. It's set to be released across Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC sometime in 2026. As an extra surprise, Boltgun fans were treated to another announcement in the form of spin-off Warhammer 40k: Boltgun – Words Of Vengeance, a 'first-person typing' shooter which is completely free on Steam. The shooter is basically an alternative take on Boltgun where you type out randomised words to kill the enemy hordes. You play as Malum Caedo, who is on a mission to 'cleanse Forge World Graia of cultists, traitors, and Chaos daemons that threaten to overun it'. This isn't the only Warhammer game which is currently free. Warhammer 40k: Gladius – Relics Of War is free to keep on Steam if you download it before Monday, May 26 at 6pm BST. This is a turn-based strategy game developed by Proxy Studios which originally came out in 2018. Meanwhile, 1999's Warhammer 40k: Rites Of War is free on GOG until Thursday, May 29. This is another turn-based strategy title, which was re-released in 2015. While you can download all these games for free and keep them, if you have some spare time over the weekend, you can play 2018's Warhammer 40k: Mechanicus for the next three days for free on Steam. A sequel is currently in development at Bulwark Studios. If you're not a PC player, there are heavy discounts on other Warhammer games across Xbox and PlayStation, although none of them are free unfortunately. Along with the aforementioned Warhammer 40k: Boltgun 2 and Words Of Vengeance, there were several other announcements at the showcase. Developer Owlcat revealed Warhammer 40k: Dark Heresy, a narrative-driven tactical role-playing game which features 'intricate investigations' and player choices that 'carry grave consequences'. It is set to be released on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC at an unspecified future date. Owlcat also announced its second expansion for Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader, titled Lex Imperialis, will launch on June 24. A second season pass is also in development with two additional 15-hour expansions. More Trending Elsewhere on the DLC front, Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2 will soon receive a new PvE Siege mode, where three players must survive and defend a fortress against waves of enemy hordes. It will be playable on Steam via Saber Interactive's public test server from June 4, and will roll out across all platforms as part of a free update on June 26. For fans of the original Space Marine, a Master Crafted Edition re-release is set to launch on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and Game Pass on June 10, 2025. This edition, described as a 'thoughtful restoration' of the 2011 original, includes 4K support, revamped controls, improved visuals, and all previously released DLC. Relic Entertainment's real-time strategy game, Warhammer 40k: Dawn Of War, is also getting a modern revamp via a new Definitive Edition, which includes the base game along with all previous expansions. Warhammer's free new game makes typing grimdark
Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun – Words of Vengeance is a new typing game based on Warhammer 40,000 and it's available now for free on PC via Steam. The dark sci-fi spin on a typing teacher was shadow-dropped during a series of announcements made during the latest Warhammer Skulls Showcase. Also shown was a trailer for Boltgun 2, a sequel to Auroch Digital's first-person shooter the new typing game is based on. Words of Vengeance follows in the footsteps of games like Typing of the Dead where you type on-screen prompts as quickly and as accurately as you can to defeat enemies and progress in on-rails levels. It's set in the world of Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun and uses the same pixelated 3D aesthetic with plenty of blood and violence, except the blood is spilled by typing. As a fan of mechanical keyboards, I personally love occasionally firing up typing tests to hear what the latest keyboard I'm obsessing over sounds and feels like. But as much as I love Monkeytype or Keybr, an actual typing game offers a different kind of fun. The thought of going full boomer-shooter with my proper grammar and punctuation exercises just has me more stoked than ever. Plus, it's free.
