
Warren Buffett's quiet moves send shockwaves through Wall Street

Yet despite these short-term gains, Buffett is building a historically large cash position — now exceeding $350 billion — and repositioning Berkshire's portfolio toward energy and consumer staples, including fresh investments in Occidental Petroleum and Constellation Brands. Buffett famously warned about derivatives as 'financial weapons of mass destruction' years before the 2008 collapse. He quietly accumulated cash before the COVID crash in 2020. Markets may be known for their irrational behavior, but Buffett's moves are usually based on numbers, patterns, and a gut instinct honed over seven decades. His legacy is built not just on the billions he made, but the crashes he avoided.
His cooling on banks is the classic contrarian signal the Oracle of Omaha is famous for. The rapid repositioning has not gone unnoticed by investors already rattled by political volatility, surging inflation, and uncertainty surrounding US monetary policy. 'Part of this could be driven by expectations that these current equity valuations are not sustainable,' said Gennadiy Goldberg, head of US rates strategy at TD Securities. Buffett's moves align with a broader pullback among major industry leaders.
Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase, sold $31.5 million in company stock in April, following a $125 million sale in 2024. It was his first personal sell-off since becoming CEO in 2005. Such exits come as Wall Street deals with rising inflation and uncertainty over Trump's economic policy. The Trump administration's revived trade wars have injected volatility into the markets and uncertainty into long-term growth projections. US inflation hit 2.7% in June, and the Federal Reserve has twice slashed its 2025 GDP forecast, from 2.1% to 1.4%.
The central bank's projections signal weakening consumer demand and a potential slowdown in growth during the second half of the year. Higher inflation could force long-term Treasury yields up — triggering a domino effect of rising loan defaults, declining merger activity, and stress on bond portfolios. 'The big, big red flag is going to be consumption,' said Kambiz Kazemi, chief investment officer at Validus Risk Management. 'If unemployment goes up and consumer spending drops, it triggers a feedback loop through the entire borrowing ecosystem.'
Concerns are also rising over the Trump administration's confrontational stance toward the Federal Reserve. Meanwhile, Trump's escalating threats to remove Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell have rattled investors and bank CEOs alike. JPMorgan's Dimon, Goldman Sachs' David Solomon, Citigroup's Jane Fraser, and Bank of America's Brian Moynihan have all warned the White House against destabilizing monetary policy. 'Uncertainty around tariffs, and more generally, uncertainty about most subjects — the way the administration is running things — is going to be slowly eroding the trust in the system,' Kazemi added. 'The reality has to catch up.'
A shake-up at the Fed could lead to artificially lowered short-term interest rates, further distorting inflation expectations. While trading revenues have remained strong amid tariff-driven market volatility, other banking segments, particularly corporate lending and dealmaking, are already showing signs of strain. The bond market has begun to reflect broader investor skepticism. Bill Gross, co-founder of Pimco and widely regarded as the 'Bond King,' issued a warning on X earlier this week: 'Investors wake up! I for one am moving defensively — more cash, buying value with 4–5% dividend yields. And an emphasis on non-US.' Gross's comments underscore growing unease in global markets, with inflation, rate uncertainty, and trade policy reshaping the investment landscape faster than Wall Street earnings can keep up. Although Berkshire Hathaway maintains significant exposure to the financial sector — 16.4% in American Express and 10.1% in Bank of America — its trajectory seems clear. The firm is reallocating toward sectors traditionally seen as more resilient in downturns. 'It's always hard to know how much of Berkshire's selling reflects macroeconomic pessimism versus firm-specific or internal considerations,' Cunningham said. 'But the concentration in energy and staples suggests a shift toward stability and defensiveness.'

Mexican restaurant in California shuts down after 90 years
Las Cuatro Milpas in San Diego, California, will be closing for good after 92 years of business. The Mexican restaurant famous for its handmade tortillas is shuttering following a string of financial struggles. Loyal customers were heartbroken to hear the news about the Barrio Logan neighborhood eatery. 'It's been a part of our family, a weekly or monthly ritual. My grandkids in Tucson are very sad that this place is going to close,' a customer told FOX 5 San Diego . Andy Meza, another longtime fan, revealed Las Cuatro Milpas is the kind of restaurant that 'takes you back to when you were growing up.' The Estudillo family is currently facing over $190,000 in combined tax debt and has put the property on the market for nearly $2 million. Despite the financial struggles, their realtor Voltaire Lepe explained the family is mainly selling the business in order to retire. 'They've been working here all their lives. Just like any business owner, everyone owes money to different government agencies,' he said. Social media users have shared stories on Instagram of their memories of the restaurant that served generations of their families. 'I've been a regular for over 50 years. I was 18 years old when I was first introduced to the marvelous place,' a customer wrote. 'I will be there on their last day and order everything on the menu for one last taste.' 'This has been my Breakfast Spot for the last 20 years it's a sad day to know they will be closing but hopefully one or a few of the younger generation brings it back and gives the City another 100 years,' another person wrote. A few others admitted they would cry on the last day of operations, and suggested the owners set up a GoFundMe to pay off their debt. The family has not revealed if money from the property sale would go toward their unpaid taxes, but they will be accepting offers until August 6. The listing only features the two residential units of the property, but the Estudillos are open to allow a buyer to relaunch Las Cuatro Milpas. 'If the right offer came along where they want to buy the piece of real estate along with the business, the family will consider it,' Lepe revealed. Las Cuatro Milpas is not the only Mexican restaurant to throw in the towel this year. Oscar's Taco House in San Antonio, Texas, shuttered in June to make way for a new bridge after 63 years of serving Mexican cuisine . Former owner Alex Pruneda claimed the city had actually wanted them to shut down in May. However, Pruneda extended operations after telling them in a letter that it was 'too soon.' The small Z'Tejas restaurant chain closed its final location after 36 years earlier this month, blaming it on the end of its lease and 'the challenges of today's market.' Mexican restaurant empires also shuttered restaurants this year, including Taco Bell, which made headlines for closing its oldest restaurant in April . On the Border Mexican Grill & Cantina also frightened customers by filing for bankruptcy in March and closing 76 restaurants.

Revolut has kicked off a recruitment drive for 400+ roles in Western Europe after announcing plans to invest more than $1 billion to establish a new HQ in France over the next three years. 0 Following the recent appointment of Béatrice Cossa-Dumurgier as CEO Western Europe, Revolut is launching a major recruitment drive across the region. Over 400 roles are set to be opened in France, Spain, Italy, Ireland, Germany, and Portugal over the next few years, spanning compliance, risk management, and other key functions — with at least 200 of those roles based in France. In parallel, approximately 600 existing Revolut employees will progressively transition to the French entity once it has been established, particularly in customer support, credit, and product functions to support the development of new features, including mortgages and business loans in the region. The ramp-up intends to begin with around 80 new hires in the first year and scale to over 400 direct roles by 2029. Combined with continued operational support from the wider group, more than 1,500 employees will be dedicated to Revolut's French banking entity by the end of the decade. Further leadership team executive appointments will be announced later this summer. These recruitment efforts are taking place in parallel with Revolut's ongoing application for a banking licence in France. Cossa-Dumurgier says: 'We're already hard at work building our new Western Europe headquarters in Paris - and that comes with a major hiring push across the region. Revolut reported bumper growth for the full year 2024, driving pre-tax profits to $1.4 billion and net profit at $1 billion. Tariff of 15% ‘challenging' but avoids a trade war
Peter Burke said that the EU-US deal avoids both a trade war and EU counter-measures, which would have had an effect on the north-south economy. He said 'the devil is in the detail' of the trade agreement finalised on Sunday by Donald Trump and European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen in Scotland. 'We had a lot of modelling carried out on the various different options, and some were very perverse, that would have closed the market if you had over a 30% tariff with a stacking mechanism,' Mr Burke told RTE Radio. 'The key thing is that there will be a number of carve outs. Obviously, aviation has been cited as zero-for-zero, but also in relation to agrifoods and potentially spirits.' The bloc is set to face 15% tariffs on most of its goods including cars, semiconductors and pharmaceuticals entering the US and 'zero for zero' tariffs on a number of products including aircraft, some agricultural goods and certain chemicals – as well as EU purchases of US energy worth 750 billion dollars over three years. Mr Burke said it was his understanding that the 15% tariff on the pharmaceutical sector would be a maximum rate. He added: 'I think the president of the Commission has been very clear that 15% will be a ceiling.' It is still unclear from the deal, agreed five days before Mr Trump's threat of a 30% tariff would have come into effect, will mean Ireland will need to invest in US energy, he added. 'This all has to be worked out yet, as you can appreciate, I'm only hearing this for the first time last night, and we have nothing on paper.' Ireland's premier Micheal Martin and deputy premier Simon Harris welcomed the agreement struck on Sunday, saying that while Ireland 'regrets' the baseline tariff of 15%, it welcomed the certainty for businesses. Mr Harris said further detail was needed around how tariffs would affect sectors including pharmaceuticals. Ireland remains vulnerable to a slow down in trade with the US economy, due to exports of products such as alcohol, dairy and beef. The Irish government has also expressed concern at how tariffs could affect pharma multinationals based in Ireland, which employs about 45,000 people in Ireland, as Mr Trump had signalled he intended to target that industry. In addition, 65% of all aircraft are leased through Ireland globally. Last week, Finance Minister Paschal Dohonoe said the Irish government would spend 9.4 billion euro on its budget in October, based on a zero-tariff scenario for next year. He and Public Expenditure Minister Jack Chambers said these estimates would need to be revised if there was a shock to the Irish economy. Mr Burke said it was not naive to base the government's economic scenario on a zero-for-zero trade agreement with the US. 'No it wasn't because we didn't know what we were to be faced with,' he said on Monday. 'We do need to find out what happens in other areas, because this is very complex. 'It depends what happens with China, that's a very significant market that a deal hasn't happened yet. 'It really impacts what happens with our exporters here in Ireland as well, because so much product is in danger of being redirected into EU market. 'We also don't know what separate carve outs are going to emerge for the different sectors that are so vulnerable from an Irish perspective. 'Until we get flesh on the bones and all those areas over the coming weeks, we'll be in a better position then to really put forward what budgetary parameters (we) will end up with.'
