Uttar Pradesh to observe ‘Partition Horror Memorial Day' across all districts on August 14
Organised by the department of culture in collaboration with various social and voluntary organisations, the programmes aim to honour the memory of those displaced during India-Pakistan partition, according to a press statement issued by the state government on Saturday.
Families affected by the Partition will be invited to participate, and tributes will be paid to those who lost their lives during the upheaval. The state government has directed the department of culture to collaborate with social and non-governmental organisations, including the Sindhi Council of India, Uttar Pradesh Sindhi Sabha, Uttar Pradesh Sindhi Academy and the Sanatani Punjabi Mahasabha.
Across designated venues in each district, historical exhibitions will be set up, showcasing photographs, newspaper clippings, literary works, government archives and preserved personal belongings of displaced families. These exhibits are intended to serve as a powerful reminder of the human cost of Partition.
Publishers and booksellers will also take part in the exhibitions, contributing relevant literature on the subject. Additionally, under the supervision of the department of culture, films and documentaries related to the India–Pakistan Partition will be screened at exhibition venues, as well as in schools, colleges, and universities throughout the state.

Referring to August 15, the chief minister added that the Sangh Parivar, or the group of Hindutva organisations led by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, 'which had no role in the freedom movement and served the British Raj, now seeks to undermine Independence Day by promoting divisive agendas'. The RSS is the parent organisation of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Leader of the Opposition VD Satheesan also criticised the governor's decision, saying that it was unconstitutional, Mathrubhumi reported. 'By doing this, [Arlekar], holding a constitutional post, is openly telling Kerala that he still represents the divisive politics of the RSS,' Satheesan was quoted as saying. The governor's circular issued to the vice chancellor said that August 14, a day before Independence Day, has been declared as the Partition Horrors Remembrance Day and that the educational institutes 'can organise seminars to commemorate the occasion', The Indian Express reported. The governor is the ex-officio chancellor of all universities in Kerala. 'They can prepare dramas on this which can be done by going to the people and showing how terrible the Partition was,' read the circular. The institutes were asked to hold the exhibition at public places to ensure maximum participation from the public. The displays were to highlight the suffering people faced during the Partition. In 1947, when British-ruled India was divided into two independent countries – India and Pakistan – lakhs of people were forced to leave their homes. In June, both the government and the ruling Left Democratic Front, along with the opposition United Democratic Front, had taken to the streets to protest against the Governor, accusing him of turning Raj Bhavan into RSS headquarters after a 'Bharat Mata' portrait holding a saffron flag became a constant fixture at several official events. An official email from Kerala Raj Bhavan, which surfaced Monday, was s ent by the additional secretary to the Governor, saying that universities should observe 14 August as 'Partition Horror Day'. It directed that the universities could organise seminars and plays that 'show how terrible the Partition was' to the impacted people. Kerala will never allow its campuses to be turned into stages for the Sangh Parivar divisive agenda.'' Governor is the ex-officio Chancellor of all the universities in the state. The circular issued to the V-Cs from the Raj Bhavan, said August 14 has been declared as 'Partition horror day'. 'The universities can organise seminars to commemorate the occasion. They can prepare dramas on this which can be done by going to the people and showing how terrible the Partition was,' said the circular. The UGC in 2022 had issued to all colleges and universities to hold an exhibition on August 14 following an announcement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2021. Institutions were asked to display the exhibition at public places on the day in such a manner to ensure maximum participation from the public. It was meant to reminisce the suffering people had faced during the Partition. Many other states in the country have been observing August 14 as the Partition day. However, Left-ruled Kerala had not so far complied with the directive in the state. Reacting to the directive, Vijayan, on his X handle said, 'August 15 is a reminder of India's anti-imperialist struggle and brutalities unleashed by the British to suppress it. The Sangh Parivar, which had no role in the freedom movement and served the British raj, now seeks to undermine Independence Day by promoting a divisive agenda. The Governor's directive to universities to observe August 14 as partition horror day is unconstitutional and unacceptable,'' he said.
