Russian air defences destroy dozens of Ukrainian drones, officials say
(Reuters) -Russian air defence units destroyed dozens of Ukrainian drones over widely separated regions of Russia on Tuesday, including more than 40 over Voronezh region on the Ukrainian border, officials said.
Voronezh regional Governor Alexander Gusev, writing on Telegram, said there were no injuries and more than 40 drones were destroyed over urban areas and near the border.
The governor of Ulyanovsk region on the Volga River said eight drones had been repelled without any casualties.
Russia's Defence Ministry said 22 drones had been destroyed over nearly four hours.
It noted 13 drones downed over Voronezh and others over Saratov and Samara regions and Tatarstan, all along the Volga, as well as in Belgorod Region on the Ukrainian border.
Reuters could not independently verify the attacks.
Ukraine has beefed up its capacity of drone construction and strikes since the start of the 40-month-old war against Russia. In an attack earlier this month, dubbed "Operation Spider's Web", it targeted Russian long-range bombers at air bases.
Russia has intensified its drone and missile strikes on Ukrainian cities in recent months. A missile attack on Tuesday in southeastern Ukraine killed at least 17 people.

The incident involved a Perodua Axia driven by a 55-year-old local man who collided with two girls, aged 12 and 7, as they were crossing the road. City Police Chief ACP Kasim Muda said the impact of the crash caused the death of one child at the scene, while the other suffered head injuries and is receiving medical attention at Likas Hospital. 'Her condition is reported to be stable. The driver was uninjured. Preliminary investigations suggest that he was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the incident. 'However, a toxicology sample has been taken for further analysis,' he said in a statement, adding that a case has been opened under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. The police are urging witnesses to come forward with any information that could aid in the investigation. Nine men rounded up after Kinarut brawl

PAPAR: Nine men aged between 19 and 50 were rounded up following a brawl in a restaurant at Palm Square, Kinarut, on Sunday. District Police Chief Supt Kamaruddin Ambo Sakka said police received a call at 6pm regarding a fight involving a Pakistani national and a local Indian. He said initial investigations revealed that the local called the name of the foreigner, a restaurant operator, in a rude tone which led to an argument. 'A fight then broke out between them, prompting their friends to intervene, which led to the situation getting out of control. 'The fight was said to have turned ugly when both parties used restaurant chairs and sticks as weapons and hit each other. The fight was broken up by the public,' he added. Kamaruddin said the misunderstanding between both parties started a week before the incident when the restaurant owner sold scrap metal to the local, a scrap metal business owner. Advertisement He said the restaurant owner was dissatisfied after allegedly being given a cheap price for the scrap metal. The case is being investigated under Section 148 and Section 60 of the Penal Code. Kenyans brace for protests one year after storming parliament

Although the protests eventually faded after President William Ruto withdrew proposed tax hikes that had initially sparked the rallies, public anger over the use of force by security agencies has not abated, with fresh demonstrations erupting this month over the death of a blogger in police custody. Six people, including three police officers, were charged with murder on Tuesday over the killing of 31-year-old blogger and teacher, Albert Ojwang. All have pleaded not guilty. The death of Ojwang has become a lightning rod for Kenyans still mourning the deaths of more than 60 people killed during last year's demonstrations and blaming security forces for the fatalities and dozens of unexplained abductions. Police sources told Reuters that a heavy security presence would be deployed around downtown Nairobi, particularly near the presidency, parliament and the central business district. The interior ministry in a post on X on Tuesday warned protesters not to "provoke police" or "attempt to breach protected areas". The unprecedented scenes on June 25, 2024, showing police firing at demonstrators as they broke through barriers to enter parliament, created the biggest crisis of Ruto's presidency and sparked alarm among Kenya's international allies. On Tuesday, the embassies of the United States, Britain, Canada, and other Western nations released a joint statement on X urging all involved to "facilitate peaceful demonstrations and to refrain from violence." Two police officers were arrested last week over the shooting of an unarmed civilian during a protest in Nairobi over the death of Ojwang, the blogger. Kenya's police chief initially implied that Ojwang had died by suicide but later apologised after an autopsy found that his wounds pointed to assault as the cause of death. President Ruto said that Ojwang had died "at the hands of the police", which he said was "heartbreaking and unacceptable".
