Sarawak showcases clean energy potential at Asean energy meet
KUCHING (June 18): The 43rd Asean Senior Officials Meeting on Energy (SOME) provided an excellent platform for Sarawak to highlight its potential leadership in the regional clean energy agenda, said Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Petra) secretary-general Datuk Mad Zaidi Mohd Karli.
He said the meeting, which concluded today here, has allowed Sarawak to demonstrate its strengths to energy officials from across Asean.
'This meeting was a great opportunity to introduce Sarawak to Asean delegates as a state rich in natural resources and committed to renewable energy.
'It showed Sarawak is ready to play an important role in the regional energy agenda,' he told reporters after the meeting.
Held over three days from June 16, the meeting aimed to align regional energy policies and review the progress of the Asean Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC).
Hosted by Malaysia through Petra, the event also served as a preparatory platform for the upcoming Asean Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) in October.
It brought together senior energy officials from all 10 Asean member states – Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam – alongside Timor-Leste as an observer.
Dialogue partners included China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and the European Union.
Nearly 250 delegates participated, including representatives from the Asean Secretariat, Asean Centre for Energy (ACE), and international organisations such as the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), International Energy Agency (IEA), Economic Research Institute for Asean and East Asia (ERIA), Asian Development Bank (ADB), and World Bank.
According to a statement from Petra, six high-level meetings were successfully convened during the 43rd SOME.
Key outcomes included significant progress on the Asean Power Grid initiative, with the ADB presenting its 2025–2026 work plan focused on clean energy transitions and sustainable infrastructure via innovative financing frameworks.
The 16th SOME-Russia Energy Consultation explored cooperation in oil, gas, and nuclear energy, while initiating discussions on a new energy cooperation plan for 2026–2028.
Meanwhile, the 16th SOME–United States Energy Consultation emphasised decarbonisation and the expansion of renewable energy across the region.

PUTRAJAYA: The government is conducting a structured assessment to explore the role of nuclear energy as a potential source of clean, stable and competitive electricity in the country's future energy mix. This initiative considers the need to diversify energy sources, strengthen long-term energy security, support carbon emission reduction targets, and reduce dependence on fossil fuels, in line with Malaysia's climate change commitments and rising energy demand. The Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (PETRA) said the Nuclear Energy Programme Implementing Organisation (NEPIO), under MyPOWER Corporation, has been tasked with coordinating preparatory efforts based on guidelines recommended by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). 'This preparatory phase is being carried out through the coordination of an organised framework via a technical committee mechanism involving ministries, departments and agencies to ensure a comprehensive and integrated national approach. 'Its implementation will be guided by the IAEA Milestone Approach, which includes national positioning, the development of legal and regulatory frameworks, stakeholder engagement and human capital development,' PETRA said in a statement today. However, PETRA said that no decision has been made at this stage regarding the implementation, type of technology or capacity of any nuclear reactor to be developed. The ministry said the government's priority is to ensure that any future decision is based on comprehensive technical analysis and aligned with national development priorities, while also complying with international obligations. 'This is in line with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI, which emphasises long-term national planning that is grounded in knowledge, sustainable resource use and the well-being of the people and future generations,' PETRA added. On Thursday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, during the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), said the government is considering nuclear energy as one of the safe, competitive and clean energy sources for the future. - Bernama

SEREMBAN, Aug 1 — The water tariff hike in Negeri Sembilan will not burden the public but instead lead to improved services in the future, says Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun. He said the revision was not decided arbitrarily but was thoroughly studied and discussed with the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), noting that most states have also agreed to the increase. 'This adjustment will bring long-term benefits, particularly in restructuring Negeri Sembilan's RM700 million debt to Pengurusan Aset Air Berhad incurred during the construction of the Ngoi-Ngoi 2 Water Treatment Plant, as well as funding the construction of new dams. 'Revenue from the new tariff will also enable better management of non-revenue water and a comprehensive pipe replacement programme, which in turn will help improve the quality of service,' he told reporters after launching the Negeri Sembilan-level Fly the Jalur Gemilang 2025 campaign here today. Aminuddin, who is also the Port Dickson member of parliament, added that operating costs have risen sharply, particularly due to higher electricity tariffs, which have increased the state's monthly water pumping expenses, especially for commercial and industrial sectors, by RM700,000 since last July. He said domestic consumers will continue to enjoy subsidies for up to 40 cubic metres of water consumption, with the first 20 cubic metres fully subsidised and the next 20 cubic metres charged at the minimum rate. 'We only make a margin of about 10 sen from the cost of water treatment and management. Even with the tariff adjustment, domestic consumers still pay below the actual cost. 'The real cost of water treatment in the state is between RM1.10 and RM1.15 per cubic metre, but consumers are only charged around 70 sen, meaning the government continues to bear a subsidy of more than 40 sen,' he said. He urged the public to understand the rationale behind the tariff increase and to support the state government's efforts to ensure long-term water supply sustainability. Yesterday, it was reported that domestic water tariffs in almost all states in Peninsular Malaysia and the Federal Territory of Labuan will be increased from Aug 1, following the gazettement of the new water tariff structure announced by the National Water Services Commission (SPAN). The adjustment involves an average increase of 20 sen per cubic metre, raising the new rate to RM2.75 from RM2.55 previously. The revision, however, does not affect domestic users in Perak. — Bernama
