Six Flags Great America, Hurricane Harbor in Gurnee bringing back chaperone policy this week
The policy requires guests aged 15 and under to be escorted by a parent, guardian, or adult aged 21 or older.
The policy will be in effect all day from July 17 to 20, and then from 5 p.m. until close after that through the end of the season. The park said it could also implement the policy starting earlier in the day as they need to.
Chaperones must have a valid government-issued photo ID with their date of birth at ticket entry. One adult cannot accompany more than 10 guests 15 years old or under, and they must remain in the park and stick with their party.
Guests 16 and older must also show a government photo ID. If not, they will be denied entry.
Guests 15 and under without a chaperone will be removed from the park during chaperone hours.
In a notice to parents and guardians, the park said, "Parents or guardians are responsible for the behavior of their minor children. Appropriate behavior and supervision are the responsibility of the parent/guardian and is always expected."
The reinstatement of the policy comes a week after shots were fired in the parking lot of Six Flags Great America. Police said their preliminary investigation found there may have been a fight before someone opened fire. Police said they were not able to find anyone who had been struck by the gunfire.
In August 2022, two people, a 17-year-old boy and a 19-year-old woman, were wounded in a shooting in the front entrance parking lot of the amusement park.
The park said the chaperone requirement applies to all one-day ticket holders, season pass holders, and members.

Disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein faces sentencing and a possible retrial in his New York City sex crimes case. Manhattan Judge Curtis Farber said that he could sentence Weinstein on 30 September, but only if there's no retrial on a rape charge that the last jury failed to decide. Manhattan prosecutors reiterated on Wednesday that they and Mann are ready for another trial on the rape charge. In this case, any conviction is punishable by up to four years in prison. Prosecutors requested a January trial date, but Farber proposed the fall. 'The case needs to be tried this year,' Farber said. Weinstein lawyer Arthur Aidala agreed, urging the judge to set the earliest possible date. If a fall trial happens, it would likely put Weinstein's high-profile #MeToo case back in court as Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is in the final stage of his reelection bid. Bragg, a first-term Democrat who made prosecuting sex crimes cases a priority, has expressed satisfaction with Weinstein's conviction on a criminal sex act charge related to Haley. Bragg has said Mann deserves a verdict on her part of the case. 'This work, first and foremost, is about the survivors, and that's why we're prepared to go forward," Bragg said in June. Weinstein also stands convicted of sex crimes in California. He is appealing that verdict and continued to deny all of the allegations against him.

Man accused of faking death to avoid rape charges guilty of sexual assault
A Rhode Island man accused of faking his death and fleeing the United States to evade rape charges was found guilty of sexually assaulting a former girlfriend in his first of two Utah trials. A jury in Salt Lake County found Nicholas Rossi guilty of a 2008 rape after a three-day trial in which his accuser and her parents took the stand. The verdict came hours after Rossi, 38, declined to testify on his own behalf. He will be sentenced in the case on October 20 and is set to stand trial in September for another rape charge in Utah County. First-degree felony rape carries a punishment in Utah of five years to life in prison, said Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill. Mr Gill said: 'We are grateful to the survivor in this case for her willingness to come forward, years after this attack took place. 'We appreciate her patience as we worked to bring the defendant back to Salt Lake County so that this trial could take place and she could get justice. 'It took courage and bravery to take the stand and confront her attacker to hold him accountable.' Utah authorities began searching for Rossi, whose legal name is Nicholas Alahverdian, when he was identified through a decade-old DNA rape kit in 2018. He was among thousands of rape suspects identified and later charged when the state made a push to clear its rape kit backlog. Months after he was charged in Utah County, an online obituary claimed Rossi had died on February 29 2020, of late-stage non-Hodgkin lymphoma. But police in his home state of Rhode Island, along with his former lawyer and a former foster family, cast doubt on whether he was dead. He was arrested in Scotland the following year while receiving treatment for Covid-19 after hospital staff in Glasgow recognised his distinctive tattoos from an Interpol notice. Rossi said he was the victim of mistaken identity, claiming to be an Irish orphan named Arthur Knight who was being framed. Months of court proceedings in Edinburgh followed but in November 2022, Sheriff Norman McFadyen determined the man claiming to be Knight was indeed Rossi. A hearing took place in June 2023, with Sheriff McFadyen ruling there was no barrier to Rossi's extradition. An extradition warrant was signed in September 2023 and Rossi was finally sent to the US in January 2024. Investigators say they identified at least a dozen aliases Rossi used over the years to evade capture. He appeared in court this week in a wheelchair, wearing a suit and tie and using an oxygen tank. Throughout the trial, prosecutors painted a picture of an intelligent man who used his charm to take advantage of a vulnerable young woman. She was living with her parents and recovering from a traumatic brain injury when she responded to a personal ad Rossi posted on Craigslist. They began dating and were engaged within about two weeks. On Monday, the woman described being asked to pay for their dates, cover Rossi's car repairs, lend him 1,000 dollars so he wouldn't be evicted from his apartment and take on debt to buy their engagement rings. He grew hostile soon after their engagement and raped her in his bedroom one night after she drove him home, she testified. The woman said dismissive comments from her parents convinced her not to go to the police at the time. She came forward a decade later after she saw him in the news and learned he was accused of another rape from the same year. Rossi's lawyers sought to convince the jury that his accuser built up years of resentment after he made her foot the bill for everything in their month-long relationship. They argued she accused him of rape to get back at him years later, when he was getting media attention. Lawyers for Rossi did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment after the verdict. Rossi's accuser in the Utah County case did, however, go to the police at the time. She gave evidence on Tuesday about her own experiences with Rossi, though he will not stand trial for that rape charge until next month. Rossi is accused of attacking the second woman, another former girlfriend, at his apartment in Orem in September 2008 after she came to collect money she said he stole from her to buy a computer. When police initially interviewed Rossi, he claimed she had raped him and threatened to have him killed. Rossi grew up in foster homes in Rhode Island and had returned there before allegedly faking his death. He was previously wanted in the state for failing to register as a sex offender. The FBI has said he also faces fraud charges in Ohio, where he was convicted of sex-related charges in 2008.

Out-of-control driver plows into 4 vehicles in Southern California; 2 dead, 4 injured
Two people are dead and at least four others were injured in what authorities are describing as a high-speed multi-vehicle collision in Santa Ana Monday night. Officers with the Santa Ana Police Department responded to reports of the violent crash on Main Street just north of Warner Avenue at around 6:35 p.m., officials confirmed to KTLA. Santa Ana PD Public Information Officer Natalie Garcia told reporters that the department received multiple calls about a vehicle traveling down Warner Avenue at a high rate of speed. 'It's very preliminary at this point. We know that – based on video surveillance that's circulating – a vehicle was travelling at a really high rate of speed northbound on Main when it lost control, went into the southbound lanes of traffic, driving on the wrong side of the road,' Garcia said. Dashcam video posted to Instagram moments before the crash appears to show a driver behind the wheel of a BMW speeding northbound down Warner Avenue in southbound lanes, narrowly missing the Tesla that captured the video. Arriving police and crews with the Orange County Fire Authority found four vehicles involved in the collision, several of whom were trapped inside the wreckage of one vehicle and had to be extricated. All four were rushed to a nearby hospital in unknown conditions. Two other victims, each in separate vehicles, were declared dead at the scene. Santa Clarita park a problem spot for late night parties, underage drinking It is unknown if the person speeding on the wrong side of the road was killed during the crash. In footage of the aftermath obtained by KTLA, firefighters can be seen attempting to get inside one of the involved cars, which was completely destroyed, with its entire front end smashed beyond recognition. Two other vehicles, a Honda and a Toyota SUV also both sustained devastating damages. Authorities said the investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing and that it's too early to determine whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.
