Scott McTominay scores stunner to fire Napoli to Serie A title success

Rhyl Journal24-05-2025

The former Manchester United midfielder scored a stunning scissor kick three minutes before half-time as Napoli saw off Cagliari 2-0 to beat Inter Milan to the Scudetto by one point.
Napoli had drawn their last two games to allow Inter back into the title race and anything other than a win on Friday would have opened the door for Simone Inzaghi's side to retain the trophy.

Inter did their job by beating in-form Como 2-0 and led the table for 22 minutes after Stefan de Vrij's first-half header put them into the lead, while Napoli wasted a number of chances at a nervy Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
But McTominay acrobatically fired in his 12th goal of his debut Serie A campaign to start the celebrations across Naples.
Former United team-mate Romelu Lukaku added a superb second soon after half-time to settle any remaining nerves.
Antonio Conte, in a first season in charge which saw striker Victor Osimhen leave in September and star winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia join Paris St Germain in January, lifted his sixth major league title as a manager following successful spells with Juventus, Chelsea and Inter.
Conte was not on the touchline for Friday's decisive game as he served a touchline ban after being sent off during last weekend's 0-0 stalemate with Parma.
Inter boss Inzaghi was also in the stands for the finale after he saw red in Inter's dramatic 2-2 draw with Lazio.
His side had few problems in sweeping aside Cesc Fabregas' Como, whose eight-match unbeaten run came to an end.
De Vrij headed them ahead before ex-Napoli goalkeeper Pepe Reina saw red on the stroke of half-time in his final game as a professional.
Joaquin Correa added another for Inter, but almost simultaneously Lukaku's strike in Naples ended the Nerazzurri's challenge.
But they can still end the season with major silverware as they face PSG in the Champions League final a week on Saturday.
In Spain, Manchester United winger Antony scored for the ninth time during his loan spell at Real Betis in their season-ending 1-1 draw with Valencia.

Former Southampton boss Ivan Juric appointed Atalanta manager

Ivan Juric has been appointed as Atalanta's next first-team manager just a couple of months on from presiding over Southampton's relegation from the Premier League. The Croatian endured a dreadful tenure at St Mary's after taking the reins, four days before Christmas last year, winning just two of 16 matches and immediately resigning when their relegation was confirmed. Before that, Juric had an ill-fated two-month stint at Roma from September to November 2024 but he has now signed a deal until June 30, 2027, to replace Gian Piero Gasperini at the Gewiss Stadium. He has big shoes to fill in Bergamo as Gasperini guided Atalanta to a third-place finish in Serie A to secure a spot in next season's Champions League, while he won the Europa League with them in 2023-24. Juric – whose coaching CV includes three separate stints at Genoa in two-and-a-half years, followed by spells at Hellas Verona and Torino – will officially start his role from July 1. 'Atalanta BC is delighted to announce that Ivan Juric will be the club's new men's first-team manager, starting from 1 July 2025,' a statement on the club's website read.

Next Spurs manager odds: Premier League boss favourite to replace Postecoglou

Three Premier League managers are leading the race to become the next Tottenham Hotspur boss after Ange Postecoglou was sacked. After weeks, if not months of speculation, Postecoglou was axed on Friday evening, two years to the day after he joined the north London club from Celtic. That's despite the Australian masterminding the Europa League final victory against Manchester United in May, ending Spurs' 17-year trophy drought. While that also secured the club's return to the Champions League, Tottenham shockingly finished 17th in the Premier League table, losing 22 of 38 matches. Postecoglou was bullish after the Europa league triumph, telling fans at the trophy parade that: 'All the best TV series, season three is better than season two,' suggesting his job was safe. He did later remark however that: 'Sometimes they kill off the main character,' before season three and that is exactly what Tottenham owner Daniel Levy has done. In terms of who will succeed Postecoglou, the club said in their statement: 'News on the appointment of a new Head Coach will be announced in due course.' 'When I reflect on my time as Manager of Tottenham Hotspur my overriding emotion is one of pride,' the 59-year-old said after his departure. 'The opportunity to lead one of England's historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime. Sharing that experience with all those who truly love this club and seeing the impact it had on them is something I will never forget. 'That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication and unwavering belief in a dream. There were many challenges to overcome and plenty of noise that comes with trying to accomplish what many said was not possible. 'We have also laid foundations that mean this club should not have to wait 7 more years for their next success. I have enormous faith in this group of players and know there is much more potential and growth in them.' Brentford boss Thomas Frank is the overwhelming favourite to get the job according to the bookmakers after his impressive work at west London. The Dane got the Bees promoted to the Premier League for the first time in 2021 and has since established them as a solid mid-table club on a tight budget. Sky Sports report Frank is the 'leading contender' but no talks have taken place between the manager and clubs. More Trending Fulham boss Marco Silva and Crystal Palace's Oliver Glasner are frontrunners, the latter having recently guided the Eagles to FA Cup glory, their first ever major trophy. Thomas Frank – 3/10 Marco Silva – 4/1 Oliver Glasner – 9/1 Xavi Hernandez – 12/1 Kieran McKenna – 16/1 Andoni Iraola – 16/1 Michael Carrick – 16/1 Odds courtesy of Betfair Former Tottenham midfielder Michael Carrick is also among the candidates having just been sacked by Championship club Middlesbrough, as is Ipswich's Kieran McKenna, a former Spurs youth player and coach. Xavi Hernandez, out of work since leaving Barcelona last summer and Bournemouth's highly-rated head coach Andoni Iraola are also on the shortlist. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Viktor Gyokeres' private feelings on Arsenal transfer as Gunners make final call

Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres is one of the most sought after forwards in world football, with the lure of Champions League football giving Arsenal an edge in the race Viktor Gyokeres fancies a move to Arsenal if he gets the pick of his clubs this summer. Arsenal are one of a number of top clubs targeting the Sporting Lisbon forward with Manchester United among others looking at the 27-year-old. But Sporting believe that Gyokeres prefers Arsenal and the Premier League over interest from Spain and Italy. Arsenal can also offer Champions League football which is something that United cannot boast for any potential transfer targets this summer. ‌ Sporting are ready to sell the Sweden international who hit 95 goals in 100 appearances for the Portuguese club who will allow him to leave if a club comes in with just over £60m this summer. Gyokeres knows English football from his time at Brighton and Coventry but he really made his name in Portugal but is ready for a new challenge. ‌ Gyokeres himself has been tight-lipped on his plans. Asked about his future after Sporting's final game of the season, he said: 'Let's see. It's hard for me to say, because yeah it is football and you never know what's going to happen in the summer. So for me to say anything else than that is impossible.' Arsenal are looking for a new No9 this summer but are not decided on their top target with sporting director Andrea Berta having spoken to a number of agents, targets and clubs ahead of what will be a huge window for the club. Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is a long-time admirer of Newcastle 's Alexander Isak but the Toon Army will not allow him to leave. RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko is also on their wish list with reports in Spain also suggesting Berta may go back to Atletico for former Manchester City forward Julian Alvarez. Arsenal also have to balance the spending to make sure they can achieve all of their targets this summer so the cost will come into it. They remain confident on landing Real Zaragoza midfielder Martin Zubimendi who has a £51m release clause. The Gunners also want a left winger and have an extensive list which includes Leroy Sane whose contract at Bayern Munich has expired and Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams. Berta has held extensive talks with a variety of different clubs and agents and Real Madrid 's Rodrygo has been heavily linked but his price would impact heavily on any other business.
