In the Faroe Islands, Nature Rewards Patience

As the Faroes become increasingly popular with international travelers—a trickle of visitors has turned into more of a cascade in recent years, particularly since 2023—there is a greater need for creatively expanding infrastructure, while prioritizing the needs and lifestyle of locals. The Faroese are essentially asking themselves: How can we invite visitors into the home we love, without losing what we love about it?
I hoped to find out. In April, my husband and I flew into the airport on Vágar, the third-largest island, with a plan to drive to the Northern Isles before slowly making our way back through Eysturoy and Streymoy. It was a route that would allow us to also travel through those undersea tunnels, while also being conscious of the number of pricey tolls we'd rack up from using them. We hoped to also tap into the Faroese rhythm of daily life. What would it mean to take cues from the people who know these wild landscapes best?
On our first day, we beelined for the Visit North tourism office in Klaksvík, a small city of brightly colored houses on a spit of land between the open ocean and a sheltered bay of fishing boats. Reni Heimustovu, who staffs the front desk, smiled when we asked about hiking that day. 'Last time someone wanted to go hiking in weather like this, we told them, 'Choose life!'' she laughed knowingly. Outside, the long grass was blown flat on the surrounding mountains.
And so we learned our first lessons of traveling in the Faroes: One must always be adaptable.
We climbed back into the car, and ditched the hike, instead driving along a muddy road toward Klakkur Viewpoint, below which the sea yawned expansively. In scenic, rural parts of the islands, which describes just about everywhere in the Faroes, a source of tension with rising tourist numbers has come from the fact that visitors aren't always prepared for sheep on the road. There are so many of the animals here, that in 2016, locals used their ovine population to map areas not yet canvassed by Google Maps' cars; famously, the Faroes have more sheep than people, and their wavy wool provides a living for many locals. New signage on roads like these gently reminds visitors which grazing lands are off limits to hiking and sightseeing: the sheep have the right of way.

As a tourism boom brings traffic and trash, Rockaway looks to ease the summer strain

Rockaway Beach is seeing a surge in visitors, but some locals are questioning how much their infrastructure can handle. According to the New York City Economic Development Corporation, Rockaway Beach saw 1.7 million visitors last year, up 8% from 2023, adding 300 seasonal jobs in leisure-related sectors and generating tens of millions of dollars for the local economy. "People coming from the city, we welcome them to come to enjoy our beaches, enjoy our vendors. We have small businesses, and a lot of us really wait for this summer season for our livelihood. We depend on it," Community Board 14 district manager Felicia Johnson said. For boardwalk vendor Tyrone Frison, the appeal of the Rockaways is undeniable. "Best beach in New York City," he said. "It's 'cause it's an energy, and we got love for each other." He loves seeing new faces, and these days, he says, there are many. He's not the only one who has noticed a surge in tourism. "We're excited that Rockaway is getting all of this increased attention," Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy director of education Delilah McBride said. But the boom also comes at a cost — more visitors bring more cars and more trash. "The term I learned once I started this job is 'DFD': 'down for the day,'" Johnson said. While the DFD crowds may mean no harm, she says, their presence adds pressure to the peninsula's already limited resources. "Traffic is just crazy. You never move your car on the weekend," Community Board 14 chair Dolores Orr said. "People want to park legally, but when they pack the whole family, and they're riding around for a half hour trying to find a spot, they're going to park where they can." And due to new construction, Johnson says, the strain has become a year-round issue stretching well beyond the boardwalk. "People just want to develop, develop, develop," she said. "What are you giving us with the development? Infrastructure is a big issue." The community board wants to see more visitors make use of public transit. Meanwhile, they're seeking parking solutions for the local community, including converting existing lots for public use. "We have a lot of empty vacant lots here that belong to the city," Johnson said. "The city would still be making money by making it a municipal lot that people would have to pay." As for the added garbage that comes with crowds, Council Member Selvena Brooks-Powers says keeping Rockaway clean will take a multi-pronged approach. "When you walk the streets in your community, if you feel it's dirty, you don't feel safe," she said. She says she is putting discretionary funds toward sanitation and procuring cameras to catch illegal dumping while pushing City Hall for more long-term investment. The NYC Parks Department told CBS News New York that clean-up crews are working extra hours this summer to maintain restrooms, beach areas, boardwalks and playgrounds. The department says the addition of 14 new second-shift staff members working 12-8:30 p.m. has been crucial for keeping the beach trash-free throughout the busy season. Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy is lending an extra hand. The conservancy welcomes volunteers at Rockaway Refresh clean-ups on Mondays to tackle weekend garbage overflow. "Have I seen trash, more debris this year than last year? Personally, I don't think so," McBride said. She says the conservancy and other groups have picked up their efforts to meet demand. "Every year, with this increased visitation, I think there's also an increase in awareness that we need to maintain these spaces, keep them beautiful and pristine," she said. "It's a good thing." These Are The Best Travel Toiletry Bags To Keep Essentials Organized

If you've ever been the victim of a leaky lotion in your carry-on, it's officially time for an upgrade. As a travel editor who flies multiple times per month, I scoured the market for the best travel toiletry bags to keep essentials like shampoo, moisturizers and more in place. My top picks include the spacious Away The Large Toiletry Bag, which is great for longer trips, the clear Calpak Small Cosmetics Case, and the stylish and expandable MZ Wallace Metro Accordian Cosmetic. I scoured the market for the best travel toiletry bags to keep essentials like shampoo, moisturizers ... More and more in place. Illustration: Forbes / Images: Retailer To finalize my list of the best travel toiletry bags, I spoke with Jessica Morrobel of Traveling With Jessica, who has journeyed with many of the toiletry bags on this list. 'Toiletry bags don't get nearly enough credit,' she says. 'Having everything accessible and contained while on the go is essential.' I also researched top sellers from well-known travel and accessory brands, focusing on storage capacity, durability, ease of use and unique design features. Below, my selections for the best travel toiletry bags of 2025. Our Top Recommendations Best Large Travel Toiletry Bag: Away The Large Toiletry Bag Best Hanging Travel Toiletry Bag : Aer Travel Kit 2 Best Clear Travel Toiletry Bag: Calpak Small Clear Cosmetics Case Best Travel Toiletry Bag For Organization: Peak Design Wash Pouch Most Stylish Travel Toiletry Bag: MZ Wallace Metro Accordian Cosmetic Dimensions: 9.75 x 11.5 x 3.5 inches | Capacity: 6 liters | Materials: Nylon packcloth | Colors: 9 total Best for: Affordable Durable and water-resistant Skip if: You're looking for something more stylish If you're seeking a durable, utility-focused bag, this classic from is a great option. It checks a lot of boxes at once: It's water-resistant, has ample storage and smart organization compartments, features hinged design for easy access, and is affordable. The built-in hook is handy, especially if you're staying in small spaces with limited bathroom space, plus its shower caddy safely stows your bottles as you bathe. It comes in a wide variety of colors and in three sizes; I like the medium for a long trip, while the large size—which has an impressive 9-liter capacity—is great for family travel. Dimensions: 10.2 x 3.7 x 5.9 inches | Weight: 8.8 ounces | Capacity: 3.6L | Materials: Nylon| Colors: 3 total Best for: Longer trips Water-repellent exterior Many compartments, including a zipped central pocket Skip if: Away's Large Toiletry Bag is a personal favorite of mine that I've brought with me on longer trips. It's made from a water-repellent nylon that's easy to wipe down, and its interior is also coated in a wipeable material should any spills happen. For organization, it has multiple interior compartments, including a central zipped compartment that can hold larger items. Morrobel has traveled with this toiletry bag multiple times and is also a fan: 'It's sturdy, easy to clean and the internal pockets help me separate skincare from haircare," she says. "I also love that it sits flat when open, which makes things feel less chaotic when I'm getting ready in unfamiliar spaces.' Take note: This is a larger toiletry bag than others on this list, so expect it to take up more room in your suitcase. Dimensions: 9 x 6.5 x 3 inches | Capacity: 2.5 liters | Materials: 700D Cordura | Colors: 3 total Best for: Hanging option Slim profile Anti-microbial lining Skip if: You don't need that many pockets If you're sharing a hotel room with a friend or spouse, the Aer Travel Kit 2 will ensure that no one will be fighting over counter space. It has an ultra-slim profile, but there's room to store a lot more than you'd expect at first glance. While our top overall L.L. Bean pick also has the ability to hang, this toiletry bag has more features: Its top half is wider and can hold more items, and there are more compartments to keep your essentials organized, like an exterior toothbrush holder, zippered pockets and elastic bands designed to secure travel-sized bottles. Another bonus: Its interior is treated with an anti-microbial lining the keep mildew at bay, and the durable Cordura exterior is easy to rinse off and air dry if needed. Dimensions: 8.25 x 6 x 4 inches | Capacity: 2.5 liters | Materials: Cordura | Colors: 3 total Best for: Clear exterior Handle for easy carrying Compact Skip if: You need interior pockets 'I love a clear toiletry bag that allows me to see everything at a glance,' says Morrobel, who names the Calpak Clear Cosmetics Case as the pick she travels with most. Made from a transparent Cordura fabric, this bag's exterior can be deceiving: It may seem flimsy and plastic-like at first glance, but its material is surprisingly durable. While it doesn't have as many pockets as other options on this list, it does feature two zippered compartments and a smaller, zippered mesh pocket for organization. Its most winning feature, of course, is its transparency that allows you to reach for exactly what you need without having to dig around or remember where you stashed it. I like the small version, as it's the easiest to fit into a small carry-on bag, but it's also available in medium or large sizes. Dimensions: 10.2 x 6 x 4.4 inches | Capacity: 2.5 liters | Materials: 100% recycled weatherproof 200D nylon | Colors: 3 total Best for: Compact silhouette Magnetic toothbrush pocket Removable and washable liner Skip if: For those who are traveling with different types of toiletries, this pick from Peak Design is a great solution. The Wash Pouch has a compact silhouette, although once you zip it open, you'll discover an array of organization options to stow your toiletries including a magnetic toothbrush pocket—plus, a removable liner that's washable. The silicone-coated mesh pockets are handy, as are the large main sections with slots to keep bottles in place and the smaller exterior pockets for easy accessibility. It has an aluminum hook that lets you hang your pouch just about anywhere, but several reviewers say the hook is a little shallow, causing the bag to slip off pretty easily. If a hanging toiletry bag is your primary need, go with the Aer Travel Kit 2 instead. Dimensions: 7.48 x 4.33 x 4.33 inches | Capacity: Not listed | Materials: Bluesign-approved REC Oxford | Colors: 2 total Best for: Stylish design Many compartments and zippered pockets Water-resistant fabric Skip if: You're on a budget—this is one of the more expensive options on our list A travel toiletry bag needs to be durable, but that's doesn't mean it can't be stylish. I'm a fan of MZ Wallace's Metro Accordian Cosmetic, which hits both marks. It's made of the brand's proprietary fabric blend, REC Oxford, which is a recycled, chemical-free textile that is water-resistant and easy to clean. Its quilted exterior and box-like silhouette has an elevated look and can easily double as a handbag for a night out, especially since it's built with a comfortable handle that makes it easy to move around your hotel room. For organization, it unzips to reveal five accordian-style compartments for toiletries, makeup and more. The black Italian leather trim and matte black zippers amp up the style points, so you can look good and store a lot simultaneously. Philadelphia International Airport preps for busy 2026 travel year: "Get ourselves ready to welcome the world"

Philadelphia International Airport is gearing up for a busy year ahead. While the airport is no stranger to stepping up during big events in the city, Director of Guest Relations Leah Douglas adds, "2026 is definitely something else that we're all really excited about and trying to get ourselves ready to welcome the world." Preparation has certainly kicked into high gear. "We serve about 30,000 passengers every single day, so we're ready, but we are readying ourselves even more for the increase in the passengers," Douglas said. One of those ways is through facility improvements. Teams are working to repaint the terminals while also replacing floors and ceilings. New restrooms and spaces, including lactation suites, are also opening. "It's like having friends over to your house. You want everything to be spick and span, and that's what we're doing here," Douglas said. Ahead of 2026, flights to Milan and Edinburgh have already been added, and in December, the airport said Santo Domingo will be too. Aeromexico is the airport's newest airline. "We're trying to improve all the time, and we have fantastic people; it's really all about the people that work here," Douglas said. Austin Brito-Quinones is a part of the airport's newly minted customer care team. It's celebrating a year since it started this month. He helps both English and Spanish-speaking passengers. The airport said the team of over 20 people will be an instrumental resource for the influx of travelers expected from around the world in 2026.
