Here's Why Aldi's Seafood Is So Cheap

Fish and other types of seafood are a great dinner option. Daily intake of certain types of fish is associated with some impressive benefits, including improved cognitive function and a decreased risk of heart disease. Additionally, many types of fish and seafood are just incredibly tasty. The only real drawback is the price, but Aldi is here to save dinner with its affordable selection of fresh and frozen seafood.
If you're not convinced, let's crunch some numbers. While prices and availability will vary, our local Aldi is currently offering farmed Norwegian Atlantic salmon for $10.99 per pound, while another local grocery store prices its Faroe Island salmon (a type of farm-raised fish from the Northeast Atlantic Ocean) at $16.99 per pound.
You can't beat a bargain like that, but there is the question of why Aldi's seafood is so much more affordable than other grocery chains. The answer has much to do with Aldi's unique way of doing things, as illustrated by factors like quarter deposits on shopping carts and the chain's preference for private label goods. These cost-saving factors reduce prices all over the store, but Aldi's direct sourcing of its private-brand seafood gives the chain greater control over pricing and quality. It also allows Aldi to work with fisheries that sustainably source their seafood, which helps prevent overfishing and other negative environmental effects.

Aldi has expressed an ongoing commitment to offer customers an expansive selection of low-cost seafood and other reasonably priced products. However, that doesn't mean you should expect subpar quality, as the store's seafood selection is quite delicious. We can attest to the quality of Aldi fish in particular; the fresh trout and salmon are in constant dinner rotation in this writer's household. But many others also hold a favorable opinion of the store's seafood.
On Reddit, a commenter states, "I've been buying the coho salmon for years. I think it's very good and the price is excellent. I also buy the trout and tilapia." Another person praises the affordability of the chain's fish, saying, "My Aldi has 50% off salmon nearly every time I go. It's awesome." In another Reddit thread, Aldi's frozen tempura shrimp is described as "crunchy, delicious, a pleasure to eat."
At one point, Aldi even offered a whole, pre-cooked 1-pound lobster, which was met with some trepidation but still received praise. According to one Redditor, "We had them and they were great! We are very picky, too, and we were skeptical." In the fast-evolving world of generative AI, a new kind of arms race is underway, one that has less to do with GPUs and more to do with data. And Reddit, once a renegade darling of the internet, is now learning just how vulnerable its own data can be. The company's lawsuit against AI startup Anthropic, filed on Wednesday in Superior Court in San Francisco, accuses the Claude chatbot maker of illegally scraping Reddit content to train its models. But this lawsuit invites a question Reddit may not want to ask too loudly: Is this really data theft, or just karmic symmetry? Reddit's business model: A content glass house? Reddit's value proposition has long been about community, what it calls "authentic conversation." Much of that authenticity is built on user-contributed content that, ironically, often originates elsewhere. Reddit users share news articles, images, and other copyrighted materials, sometimes without proper attribution and certainly without payment. Users post this content freely, Reddit monetizes it through ads, and little of that value flows back to the original creators. This practice was noted by my former Business Insider colleague Julie Bort before Reddit's IPO in 2024. "Journalists like myself have watched as Reddit users have posted copies of our work on the platform, in violation of copyright laws, with moderators looking the other way," she wrote. Investors must be pretty concerned about the value of Reddit's content being sucked away by giant AI models, Bort added at the time. "In the words of Taylor Swift, ' Karma 's gonna track you down.'" Pot, meet kettle Reddit's monetization strategy relies in part on hosting content from around the web without paying for it, calling into question the ethics of its data economy. Now, Reddit is suing Anthropic for doing what some might see as a more automated version of Reddit's own game: collecting free content from the web and monetizing it. In its complaint, Reddit alleges that Anthropic scraped its platform in violation of the site's user agreement and file, ignoring technical and legal boundaries designed to protect Reddit's commercial value. The lawsuit hinges on the idea that Reddit deserves to be compensated for use of its data, especially as it now sells access to that data through licensing deals such as those it signed with Google and OpenAI. In the current AI gold rush, platforms are racing to carve out paywalls around their data, whether or not they respected similar boundaries in the past. The truth is, we're in an era where copyright law is barely enforceable at internet scale, and data — once it hits the open web — tends to be treated as fair game until someone with enough lawyers says otherwise. (And even then, the copyright lawyers have yet to show real results). The irony of content "ownership" Reddit thinks it owns or at least controls the data created by its users. But unlike publishers or professional content creators, Reddit doesn't pay users, verify originality, or license incoming materials. It is essentially trying to exercise IP rights it may never have quite earned. I asked Reddit all about this. Cameron Njaa, a spokesperson for the company, said "there are a number of misunderstandings here," but didn't elaborate late on Wednesday. (One possibility: Reddit argued in the complaint that this is more about the privacy of its users' data). If I get more input from Reddit, I'll update this piece. An Anthropic spokesperson said, "We disagree with Reddit's claims and will defend ourselves vigorously." This suit more than a legal maneuver. It's a referendum on who gets to claim ownership in the data economy, especially when everyone's borrowing from everyone else. If Reddit wins, it may crack open a new revenue stream for creators and companies that produce or host content. But if it loses, it may find itself on the wrong side of the same data free-for-all it helped normalize. Either way, karma may have finally come for Reddit.

They don't care about you specifically, they want your money,' carped a complainer. 'I remember getting massive slices and not being able to finish them in one sitting and having to split it up over a day or two,' said another. 'Now, they're all gone in a matter of minutes! Kinda disappointed.' 'They have been getting smaller since COVID,' a bellyacher agreed. 'And the price goes up.'

X changes policy to restrict AI training on posts

X has updated its developer agreement to add a new restriction on using posts on the platform to train AI. The updated policy, spotted earlier by TechCrunch, says developers can't use content from X or its API to 'fine-tune or train a foundation or frontier model.' The policy change could set up X to make AI training deals with third-party companies, similar to the deal Reddit struck with Google. Reddit, which has a similar policy to block AI crawlers, sued Anthropic on Wednesday over claims the company's AI crawlers accessed the site more than 100,000 times since July 2024. Elon Musk's AI company, xAI, acquired X for $33 billion on paper in March. Though X's developer agreement now bars companies from training AI on its content, its privacy policy still states that third-party 'collaborators' can train AI models on the site's data unless users opt out. X also feeds user data into its AI model, Grok, for training.
