Arizona Cardinals DL Calais Campbell one of 10 outstanding late-career veterans in NFL
Few players have played as well for as long as Calais Campbell.
It is said that the NFL is a young man's game. It is a league where players in their 20s thrive and few last long into their 30s. The Arizona Cardinals spent the last two seasons actively getting younger.
But there are exceptions. PFF featured 10 aging veterans who are still playing at a high level. The Cardinals have one of those players — defensive line Calais Campbell.
Aside from quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Joe Flacco, Calais Campbell (who turns 39 years old in September) is the oldest active player in the NFL. The Dolphins were one of the league's biggest disappointments last year, starting the season 2-6, but Campbell still played in all 17 games, ranking first among interior defenders with an 85.9 PFF run-defense grade.
Campbell signed with the Arizona Cardinals in free agency and will finish out his Hall-of-Fame career back where it started in 2008. His leadership will be valuable for an improving defensive line, most notably 16th-overall pick Walter Nolen.
When Campbell left the Cardinals in 2017, he was a solid player. No one had the Hall of Fame connected to him. He had a couple of great years in Jacksonville and has steadily produced for almost two decades.
At no point in his career has he been considered one of the top four or five defensive linemen in the NFL. But with 14 seasons with at least five sacks, he now has 110.5 for his career.
He has talked a lot about leadership and mentoring this offseason, but there is no mistaking the fact that he can still play.

PFT's Mike Florio Starts Rumor Of Cowboys Coach Firing
PFT's Mike Florio Starts Rumor Of Cowboys Coach Firing originally appeared on Athlon Sports. FRISCO — The Dallas Cowboys are going to fire new head coach Brian Schottenheimer after this season, insists Fox Sports 1's Colin Cowherd, predicting that "America's Team'' will get "humiliated'' on a weekly basis, leading to owner Jerry Jones making for what would be for him an unprecedented move. Advertisement "Brian Schottenheimer is a one and done," Cowherd proclaimed, adding that he thinks this is his "least surprising prediction.'' "Jerry will know by Thanksgiving he made a huge mistake. Forget the fact that Philadelphia and Washington will probably blow them out in the division twice. 'One and done' happens all the time now. "I think Dallas is going to be humiliated on a lot of Sundays." As we have pointed out before ... Jones, for a variety of reasons and over 36 seasons, has never fired a head coach after one year. Chan Gailey was not an organizational favorite, but he got two years. Dave Campo was an organizational favorite — with two Super Bowl rings — but he lasted three years here while going 5-11 in each of those campaigns. Advertisement There is simply no precedent in Dallas upon which to base this prediction. But now Colin has company. Using reasoning we simply cannot grasp, Mike Florio has placed Schottenheimer on his five-man Coaches Hot Seat for 2025. ... and more, he oddly suggests that Schottenheimer might get dumped by Jerry after one year. Florio writes, "The key to knowing Schottenheimer's job security is to know whether and to what extent he has guaranteed money beyond 2025. ... Schottenheimer came cheaper. How cheap? So cheap that there would be no buyout if he's fired after one year? "If so, Schottenheimer could need to do enough in 2025 to earn his employment for 2026.'' Advertisement We don't get it. Why does Florio think Schottenheimer's contract (however affordable it might be) features no standard buyout guarantees after 2025? Why does Florio think that if Jones judged Schottenheimer's work in 2025 to be so abysmal that is merited dismissal that money would have anything to do with it? And most of all, why does Florio (along with Cowherd) think any of this "Schottenheimer will be fired'' reporting is based on any sort of logic? Buccaneers' Bucky Irving Can Make History in 2025
Buccaneers' Bucky Irving Can Make History in 2025 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and general manager Jason Licht added a huge piece of their re-tooled running game in 2024 in the fourth round of that year's draft. Advertisement Former Minnesota and Oregon running back Mar'Keise "Bucky" Irving was selected by Licht with the No. 125 overall pick and immediately made an impact on the Tampa Bay rushing attack. The Bucs were coming off a league-worst 3.4 yards per carry in 2023, and the addition of then-new offensive coordinator Liam Coen and Irving, Tampa Bay flipped the script in 2024 with a yards-per-carry average of 5.3. The Buccaneers averaged 149.2 yards per game, good enough for fourth in the league. What's more, Irving, who started his rookie season playing behind the veteran Rachaad White, took over the RB1 job about midway through the season, and totaled 1,122 yards on the season. That means with a similar performance in 2025, Irving could become just the third Tampa Bay running back ever to post back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. James Wilder posted 1,544 yards for the Bucs in 1984 while also leading the league with 407 rushing attempts and a Pro Bowl nod, then registered 1,300 the following season. Advertisement Rhett ran for 1,011 yards his rookie season of 1994 while finishing second in Offensive Rookie of the Year voting, then followed that up with 1,207 yards in 1995. Irving became the first Tampa Bay ball carrier to run for 1,000 yards since Doug Martin posted 1,402 in 2015. Now, with another stellar performance in 2025, he can make history. Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes Winds Back Clock In 'All Goes Right' Take
Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes Winds Back Clock In 'All Goes Right' Take originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Kansas City Chiefs' offense over the past couple of seasons hasn't been the swashbuckling unit we came to know in Patrick Mahomes' first few years in the league. Advertisement Playing to the defense, the Chiefs rarely blow teams out, and last season, they averaged just 22.6 points per game (ranked 15th). Now, many are skeptical if the high-octane offense will ever return. But what if it does? For Fox Sports' Henry McKenna, if everything goes right, the Chiefs and Mahomes revert to their 2020 dominance. "Back in 2020, the Kansas City offense revolved around Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill," McKenna writes. "Now, Hill is gone. And that 2020 version of Kelce is gone, too. Entering his age-36 season, the 10-time Pro Bowl tight end is slowing down. This year, the Chiefs are going to build their offense around young receivers Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy." Advertisement "And you'll see some similarities between Kelce and Rice — and Worthy and Hill. That'll give Kelce a more opportunistic role. Rookie WR Jalen Royals can take over the spot Mecole Hardman once occupied. And this offense can attack teams at all three levels with consistency." Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (15) throws as guard Joe Thuney (62) provides coverage against Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Da'Shawn Hand (93).Jay Biggerstaff-Imagn Images That 2020 season was something. Mahomes was 14-1, threw for 4,740 yards, 38 touchdowns, and just six interceptions, Travis Kelce (1,416 yards, 11 touchdowns) and Tyreek Hill (1,276 yards, 15 touchdowns) were borderline unstoppable as the Chiefs made it to the Super Bowl. Of course, they got curb-stomped by Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but the offense averaged 29.6 points per game (ranked sixth). Advertisement Could this unit in 2025 with Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, Marquise Brown and an aging Kelce help push the offense to those sorts of heights? It doesn't seem feasible based on the past two seasons, but on the other hand, we wouldn't put it past them, either.
