WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWTI) – Jefferson Community College's featured Honors Program student for the month of May 2025 is Marra Young from Philadelphia.
Young is majoring in early childhood education. She wrote a creative composition based on a class reading as one of her Honors Program options.

The Jefferson Community College Honors Program offers students with exceptional academic skills the opportunity to receive enriched instruction. Honors students select three courses within their curriculum and enhance them as Honors Options, which are based on a project agreed on by the student and a faculty member working closely with the student.
Students also take the Honors Seminar, an interdisciplinary course open only to program participants that examines a single theme every semester, featuring guest speakers from various disciplines and can include field experience.
Successful program students earn an Honors Graduate designation on their academic transcript for each Honors Option course. Students who demonstrate excellent academic achievement in high school or who have completed 12 credit hours of college coursework can apply for admission to the Honors Program.

Trump, Vance to attend ‘Les Misérables' opening at Kennedy Center
President Trump and Melania Trump, along with Vice President Vance and Usha Vance, are all poised to attend the opening night performance of 'Les Misérables' at the Kennedy Center next week. Trump vowed to 'fix' the Kennedy Center after touring it in March. The president didn't step foot in the Kennedy Center during his first term in office, bucking tradition and declining to attend its annual Honors event after several of the award's recipients criticized him. Vance attended a National Symphony Orchestra performance in March and was met with a chorus of boos from the audience, according to a video posted on social media. On Tuesday, the Kennedy Center denied reports that it allegedly saw a 36-percent decline in sales subscriptions following Trump's takeover of the arts hub. Colorado State Treasurer Dave Young announces run for 8th Congressional District
DENVER (KDVR) — The 2026 race for one of the country's most competitive congressional districts is already looking to be a heated one, and a state official just announced a bid for the seat. Colorado State Treasurer Dave Young on Wednesday morning announced his candidacy for Colorado's 8th Congressional District. As a Democrat, Young joins the growing list of state representatives and the former 8th Congressional District Rep. Yadira Caraveo herself, running to regain her seat after narrowly losing it in 2024 to current Rep. Gabe Evans. Evans, Boebert tout 'Big, Beautiful, Bill' amid boos from Coloradans Young, in a press release, called himself 'the Democratic candidate best positioned to win this seat back from Republican control in November.' The residents of Colorado's 8th District are worried about their economic future – and rightfully so. I've heard from thousands of people in our home district who are concerned that the federal government does not produce results that improve their lives and the lives of their families. They want the government to either work for them – or get out of the way. I'm running for Congress to stand up for working families, protect the programs they count on, and ensure our economy works for everyone, not just the wealthy few. I am running to stand up for Colorado's working families and deliver results that matter in a time of uncertainty. Young, as well as being current state treasurer, is also a former state representative and longtime public educator. Young in the press release called out incumbent Evans, saying the Republican representative's backing of President Trump's agenda is 'unacceptable.' Evans and Rep. Lauren Boebert, also a Republican, recently visited the Colorado State Capitol touting Trump's 'big, beautiful bill' after it passed the U.S. House, where they were met with boos and anger from some Coloradans worried about cuts to programs like Medicaid. 'My sister has severe developmental disabilities, and has been reliant on life sustaining support provided by Medicaid for much of her life. Congressman Gabe Evans and his GOP allies just voted to slash Medicaid benefits, which will impact tens of thousands of people in this district, as well as millions of others including people like my sister.' Young said if elected to Congress, he would work to protect and strengthen Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. So far, Evans is the only Republican set to appear on the 2026 ballot, but the Democratic list is already lengthy. As well as Caraveo and now Young, state Reps. Shannon Bird and Manny Rutinel also announced their candidacies for the seat, as has a former Republican, John Szemler, who says on his campaign website he hopes to capitalize on 'activating the Moderate Majority.' NNY Racing Recap: Can-Am returns from Memorial Day break
LAFARGEVILLE, N.Y. (WWTI) – Racing roared back over the weekend after the Memorial Day holiday across the north country. Theresa native Lance Willix picked up the victory over Watertown native Billy Dunn in the 25-lap 358-modified feature. Tyler Meeks, Derek Webb and Remington Hamm rounded out the top five. Mike Fowler collected the win in the 20-lap Sportsman division feature. Frank Sibley, Ryan Shanahan, Tyler Stevenson and Josh Reome finished out the top five. Jon Liberty (602 crate sprints), Michael Greenfield (thundercar) and Eymarah Bowman (limited sportsman) were also winners on Friday, May 31. Can-Am will be back in action on Friday, June 6 with the Pit Crew Showdown. Pits open at 4 p.m. with gates opening at 5 p.m. and racing beginning at 7 p.m. Evans Mills Raceway Park Rain continued to be a problem as Saturday's May 31 program was postponed. The Zeigler 67 race was pushed back until this weekend. June 6: Relay For Life at Evans Mills This weekend's scheduled card will be legends night with the pits opening at 3 p.m. Saturday.
