Adults 25-55 Now Eligible for free industry-specific degrees, at JCC via SUNY program

WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWTI) – Adults ages 25 through 55 are now eligible for no-cost, industry-specific degrees at Jefferson Community College via the SUNY Reconnect Program. Governor Kathy Hochul announced the 'New York State Opportunity Promise' initiative recognizes that higher education is a pathway to economic opportunity and upward mobility. The state launched SUNY Reconnect, a program designed to remove barriers for adult learners ages 25–55. JCC offers free tuition to boost education in key fields Via the program, eligible state residents who have not yet earned a college degree can, after filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), receive extra funding to cover any additional costs for tuition, fees and books. Students will not have to take out loans. Jefferson Community College is proud to support Governor Hochul's bold vision to expand access to higher education for adult learners through the SUNY Reconnect initiative. We remain committed to providing the guidance, flexibility, and academic excellence necessary to help students achieve their educational and career goals. WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWTI) – Are you between the ages of 25 to 55? Good news then, Jefferson Community College is among the colleges that are offering free tuition. To qualify for free tuition at a SUNY community college in a field with high demand, you must meet the following criteria: New York State resident; 25-55 years old at time of enrollment; No college degree; and Planning to study full-time or part-time in a degree program. Out of 164 programs, JCC is offering eight Associate programs for free tuition: Addiction Studies; Computer Information Systems (AS); Computer Information Technology; Computer Science; Early Childhood; Engineering Science; Liberal Arts & Sciences: Childhood Education (Teacher Education Transfer); or Nursing. NY budget proposal to allow adults ages 25-55 to attend community college for free While all participating degree programs across SUNY colleges are for 2-year degree programs. These programs are designed to connect you with jobs in high-demand industries near you. Addiction Studies: The two-year Addiction Studies A.A.S. degree at JCC equips students to tackle the rising prevalence of substance abuse and addiction in the modern world. 18 hours of the program's 63 hours of academic credit are dedicated to addiction studies. Students will gain practical experience working with patients in nearby medical facilities, says JCC. After completing this program with 350 hours of coursework and training mandated by the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS), graduates will be prepared to start a career as a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor trainee. Jefferson Community College gets $4 million grant for training center Computer Information Systems (AS): Since technology is always evolving, JCC says their Computer Information Systems A.S. was established to give students a strong foundation in the skills that employers value in computer professionals as well as a smooth transition to the bachelor's degree program of their choosing. Students will learn how to design the systems and the proper structure while gaining practical experience with business and computer information systems. Computer Information Technology: According to JCC, they have conducted consultations with local businesses and organizations to identify the knowledge and skills that businesses require to develop the Computer Information Technology A.A.S. curriculum. Programming, database design and implementation, web page development, networking technology and software application use and customization are just a few of the information technology (IT) fields in which students will gain practical expertise. JCC announces unique summer opportunity for educators Computer Science: The Computer Science A.S. program at Jefferson will get students ready for college and a job in technology and computers. Students who plan to transfer and finish their bachelor's degree are the target audience, says JCC. Students with a knack for math and science who are interested in computers and their applications are the target audience for this program. Early Childhood: Students who complete JCC's Early Childhood A.S. program are prepared to pursue further education in early childhood or related subjects at a four-year university or college, says the college. The curriculum includes 15 hours of early childhood care and education and 62 hours of academic credit, which includes the majority of the general education coursework. Engineering Science: Before moving to a four-year university, students who wish to pursue careers as engineers can start their education at Jefferson. Students with a knack for math and science are the target audience for Jefferson's Engineering Science A.S. program. Four years of high school mathematics, including precalculus, as well as four years of physics, chemistry and English are highly recommended for applicants. Canstruction winning teams donate canned goods to North Country food banks Liberal Arts & Sciences: Childhood Education (Teacher Education Transfer): By offering a comprehensive curriculum in math, science and fundamental education concepts, Jefferson helps to mold future early childhood educators (grades 1-6). According to JCC, The job market for teachers in this area is growing because there is a predicted shortage. This curriculum offers lower division coursework to satisfy New York State certification requirements and satisfies all SUNY Childhood Teacher Transfer Template requirements. Nursing: The Nursing A.A.S. program at Jefferson educates Students to become registered nurses with the knowledge and expertise necessary to provide adult or pediatric patient care in clinics, hospitals and other practice settings, according to JCC. WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWTI) – Jefferson Community College's Athlete of the Week for the Week Ending May 4, 2025, is Freshman Catcher Nicholas A. Spivey, of the baseball team. Spivey, a 2024 graduate of Patterson High School, Patterson, Calif., is majoring in Natural Sciences. Nicholas A. Spivey Named JCC Athlete of the Week for the Week Ending May 4, 2025 (WWTI/ Pamela Dixon) Spivey amassed 12 hits, including four doubles and a crucial home run, while batting an outstanding .500 over eight games this past week. He helped the Cannoneers score six runs. Overall, Spivey went 3-for-5 with runners in scoring position and recorded an impressive OPS of 1.312. WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWTI) – Jefferson Community College's featured Honors Program student for the month of May 2025 is Marra Young from Philadelphia. Young is majoring in early childhood education. She wrote a creative composition based on a class reading as one of her Honors Program options. Raven Streebel: JCC's featured Honors Program student for April 2025 The Jefferson Community College Honors Program offers students with exceptional academic skills the opportunity to receive enriched instruction. Honors students select three courses within their curriculum and enhance them as Honors Options, which are based on a project agreed on by the student and a faculty member working closely with the student. Students also take the Honors Seminar, an interdisciplinary course open only to program participants that examines a single theme every semester, featuring guest speakers from various disciplines and can include field experience. Successful program students earn an Honors Graduate designation on their academic transcript for each Honors Option course. Students who demonstrate excellent academic achievement in high school or who have completed 12 credit hours of college coursework can apply for admission to the Honors Program. North country voices worry over economy and policy impacts in JCC survey

WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWTI) – Jefferson Community College has released its most recent survey that delved into what north country residents thought about current issues. The survey from the Center for Community Studies takes a look what residents of Jefferson, Lewis, St. Lawrence and Oswego counties think about local, state and national issues. Jefferson Community College gets $4 million grant for training center One of the main issues for area residents are 82-percent feel that something needs to be done about vacant and/or blighted properties. A total of 53-percent of residents survey feel that Canadian tourism is important to the area's economy. Overwhelmingly, a total of 69-percent feel that tariffs will increase the cost of items purchased in Northern New York. Other economic issues that were a concern was economy and jobs (77 percent) and inflation (76 percent). New York Governor Kathy Hochul only showed a 16-percent favorability rating while 71-percent view her in a negative light. North country residents said a 69-percent rate that New York State is headed in the wrong direction. A total of 45-percent think the country is going in the wrong direction. A couple of things area residents weren't happy with was the recent handling of the prison guard strike with 67-percent saying the state didn't go a good job. A total of 70-percent don't approve of New York State paying for the health care of undocumented immigrants through Medicaid. President Donald Trump still holds a high favorability rating in the north country with a 49-percent rating.
