$40 million lottery ticket sold in B.C., same month as record prize win
BURNABY — British Columbia has another multimillion-dollar lottery winner about a week after handing out a record-breaking $80 million win.
The B.C. Lottery Corporation says a Lotto Max ticket purchased in Burnaby for Friday's draw matched all seven winning numbers to win the $40 million jackpot.
The corporation says in a statement that lottery prize winners have 52 weeks from the draw date printed on their ticket to come forward to claim their prize.
The corporation says the seven winning numbers were: 13, 19, 23, 26, 36, 39, and 47.
The latest jackpot comes after a Surrey man was given his cheque for $80 million earlier this month after winning what the corporation said was the biggest jackpot ever awarded to a single person in Canada.
The corporation says the odds of winning a Lotto Max jackpot are one in 33,294,800 per $5 play.
B.C. lottery players redeemed more than $102 million in winnings from Lotto Max so far this year.

Should You Lock in Your Mortgage Rate This Summer? Edmonton Buyers Urged to Act Amid Market Volatility
Dominion Lending Centres Lender Direct's Owner/Broker Vaughn Leroux Offers Timely Guidance as Interest Rates Shift EDMONTON, AB / / June 15, 2025 / With the Bank of Canada's recent decision to hold its overnight rate at 2.75% , Edmonton's housing market remains in flux. Homebuyers are now grappling with the critical question: Is this the right time to lock in a mortgage rate? Vaughn Leroux, Owner/Broker of Dominion Lending Centres Lender Direct, brings over 21 years of mortgage expertise to help clients navigate this pivotal decision. Understanding the Current Mortgage Landscape The Bank of Canada's rate hold reflects ongoing global economic uncertainties, including trade tensions and inflation concerns . While this move aims to stabilize the economy, it also influences mortgage rates, which have seen fluctuations in recent months. For instance, the current 5-year fixed mortgage rate stands at 4.56%, while the 5-year variable rate is at 4.30%. "In today's market, timing is everything," says Leroux. "Locking in a mortgage rate can provide peace of mind, especially when rates are unpredictable. However, it's essential to assess individual financial situations and long-term goals before making this decision." The Case for Locking in Now Locking in a mortgage rate secures the current interest rate for a specified period, typically ranging from 30 to 120 days . This strategy can shield borrowers from potential rate increases during the loan approval process. Given the Bank of Canada's cautious stance and the possibility of future rate hikes, locking in now could be advantageous for many buyers. Moreover, Edmonton's housing market has experienced significant activity, with average sale prices increasing by 7.7% from 2023 to 2024 . This upward trend underscores the importance of securing favorable mortgage terms promptly. Expert Guidance from a Seasoned Professional With over two decades of experience, Leroux emphasizes the value of personalized advice in mortgage decisions. "Every client's situation is unique," he notes. "By understanding individual needs and market dynamics, we can tailor mortgage solutions that align with both current conditions and future aspirations." Dominion Lending Centres Lender Direct offers a comprehensive range of mortgage services, including pre-approvals, renewals, and refinancing options. Their commitment to client-centric service ensures that Edmontonians receive informed guidance throughout their homeownership journey. Starmer, Carney Reboot UK-Canada Trade Talks Ahead of G-7
(Bloomberg) -- The UK will seek to restart trade negotiations with Canada, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said, as he strives to strengthen commercial ties around the world to better insulate Britain's economy from the fallout of US President Donald Trump's tariff war. Shuttered NY College Has Alumni Fighting Over Its Future NYC Renters Brace for Price Hikes After Broker-Fee Ban Do World's Fairs Still Matter? As Part of a $45 Billion Push, ICE Prepares for a Vast Expansion of Detention Space As American Architects Gather in Boston, Retrofits Are All the Rage 'The world is changing on trade and the economy,' Starmer told reporters on Saturday on his way to meet Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. 'That means we need to do more securing our base at home and turbo-charging what we are doing on the cost of living and at the same time reducing trade barriers with other countries.' Starmer and Carney agreed to establish a new working group to 'deepen our existing trading relationship,' with a deadline to report back in six months, according to a joint statement by the leaders Sunday. The group will be asked to deal with market access questions, and explore ways to cooperate on critical minerals and artificial intelligence. While the two nations reached a trade continuity deal in the wake of the UK's departure from the European Union, talks for a bespoke deal to cover bilateral trade worth an annual £27.5 billion ($37 billion) stalled last year after a dispute over beef, when neither Starmer nor Carney was yet in office. Both nations are also members of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, known as CPTPP. Carney agreed his government will aim to introduce legislation this year to ratify the UK's accession into that trade deal — a move that would lower tariffs between the countries. Starmer will use the G-7 summit to argue that in a shifting global economy, the UK must retain its proud status as a free and open trading nation by strengthening existing alliances while reducing barriers to trade with other countries, his office said. A trade deal with Canada was not listed as a priority for the UK government last year, when Trade Minister Douglas Alexander named agreements with the Gulf Cooperation Council, India, Israel, the Republic of Korea, Switzerland, and Turkey as the areas his department was focusing on. But Trump's return to the White House and his ratcheting up of tariffs against countries around the world has forced UK negotiators to recalibrate — seeking exemptions from the US levies while also casting a wider net in their search for new deals. Canada was the 13th biggest destination for UK exports in 2024, taking in £16.9 billion of British goods and services, according to UK statistics. It was the 17th biggest source of imports into Britain, with goods and services worth £10.6 billion crossing the Atlantic. Since Starmer took office last July, his Labour government has struck a free trade deal with India and also smaller deals with the US and EU on trade and defense. Under the US deal, which has yet to be implemented, the Americans would scrap tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from the UK and cut levies on cars to 10% from 27.5%. Starmer said in an interview with Bloomberg News on Friday that he's 'hoping that we will complete it pretty soon,' and that there are no 'hiccups or obstacles.' The premier is trying to strike a delicate balance between his friendly relationship with Trump — the UK is the only country so far to agree to a slimmed-down trade agreement amid his threats of tariffs — while also standing up for British allies with whom Trump has been more confrontational. When asked for a response on Trump's continued threats to make Canada a 51st state of the US, Starmer said he was 'absolutely clear' that Canada is 'an independent, sovereign country and a much-valued member of the Commonwealth' — his strongest public defense of the country yet. Canada's head of state is King Charles III, who recently visited Ottawa to help open a new session of Parliament following a national election that returned Carney's Liberal Party to power for another term. EQX's AISC Spike Signals Pressure, But H2 Offers Path to Cost Relief
Equinox Gold Corp.'s EQX first-quarter results reveal a sharp increase in a critical metric — all-in-sustaining costs (AISC) — a key indicator of cost efficiency in mining. AISC climbed to $2,065 per ounce, up roughly 6% from $1,950 per ounce in the year-ago quarter. While revenues soared 76%, driven by a 38% increase in realized gold prices and a 27% surge in ounces sold, higher unit costs, especially in Brazil, partly offset the benefits. Excluding the results from the Los Filos mine in Mexico, which has been indefinitely suspended after the expiry of its land access agreement, AISC still climbed 9% to $1,979 per ounce, underscoring operational cost inflation that threatens margins. This upside reflects higher unit costs in Brazil, and higher costs and unplanned maintenance due to winter challenges at the Greenstone mine in Canada. Higher operational costs, partly due to the suspension of Los Filos mine operations, may continue to act as headwinds in the second quarter. Equinox Gold expects roughly $35 million in mine suspension and care and maintenance charges at Los Filos in the second quarter. Nevertheless, there is a silver lining as the company envisions costs whittling down with rising production in the second half of 2025. With continued production ramp-up at Greenstone, reduced costs related to Los Filos and merger synergies with Calibre Mining Corp., Equinox has a clear path to attain cost efficiency. Among its peers, B2Gold Corp. BTG also saw higher costs in the first quarter. B2Gold's consolidated all-in sustaining costs of $1,533 per ounce were roughly 14% higher than the prior-year quarter. B2Gold is seeing cost inflation pressure across all sites, which is impacting input costs, including reagents, fuel and Eagle Mines Limited's AEM AISC declined 0.6% in the first quarter due to the deferral of certain sustaining capital expenditures. However, Agnico Eagle projects the same to increase in the remainder of 2025. Agnico Eagle forecasts total cash costs per ounce in the range of $915 to $965 and AISC per ounce between $1,250 and $1,300 for 2025, suggesting a year-over-year increase at the midpoint of the respective ranges. Equinox Gold has gained 37.6% year to date against the Zacks Mining – Gold industry's rise of 50.5%. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research From a valuation standpoint, EQX is currently trading at a forward 12-month earnings multiple of 6.51, a roughly 52.2% discount to the industry average of 13.62X. It carries a Value Score of A. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research The Zacks Consensus Estimate for EQX's 2025 and 2026 earnings implies a year-over-year rise of 230% and 106%, respectively. The EPS estimates for 2025 and 2026 have been trending lower over the past 30 days. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research EQX stock currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
