Raichur: The women police apprehended an individual on Aug 3, concerning the sexual assault of a minor girl whom he married.
According to SP G Puttamadaiah, the police took Tatappa, 22, son of Narasayya from Shaktinagar, into custody.
The women police filed a case against 10 individuals, including Tatappa, on July 21, following a complaint from Ravikumar, the panchayat development officer of Devasugur, who verified the documents related to the girl's age.
Taking the matter seriously, the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights directed the Yadgir police to urgently detain the father-in-law who married the minor.
The FIR indicates that accused No.2 to 10 — Gaddemma, Sumangala, Geetha, Anjaneyya, Gaddeppa, Renuka, Sadanand, Mahadevi, and Ramanagouda — conducted the marriage of Tatappa with the minor girl on April 18, at Shaktinagar, fully aware that she was underage.
Additionally, the FIR noted, citing the victim's testimony, that Tatappa sexually assaulted her twice at his residence, despite being aware of her minor status.
The police initiated a case under sections 9 and 10 of the Prevention of Child Marriages Act, Sections 64 r/w 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita 2023, and Sections 6 and 17 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (Pocso) 2012.
In his comments on the arrest, Commission member Shashidhar Kosambe stated: "To promote the education of the minor, prompt action should be taken under the applicable schemes, and a report should be sent to the commission concerning this matter."

Man attempts suicide as Mumbai police reach his home to arrest him in Pocso case

A 55-year-old man allegedly attempted suicide when a Mumbai police team went to his home at Badlapur in Thane on Tuesday night to arrest him for allegedly sexually assaulting the minor daughter of a bedridden man he had been hired to take care of. A police officer investigating the sexual assault case said on Thursday, 'The man was immediately rushed to the nearby private hospital, where he lay unconscious for almost 36 hours, and currently his condition is stable.' The minor girl's father suffered a paralytic attack last year. The accused, who was hired in May to look after the minor girl's father from 8 am to 8 pm, would sexually assault her and also make obscene remarks after her mother left for work, according to the police complaint in the case. He allegedly kept harassing the girl despite being warned by her mother. The minor girl and her mother decided to complain to the police after the man allegedly harassed the girl in her bedroom on July 28. The police booked him under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act on July 29. On learning about the FIR registered against him, the accused fled from Mumbai and went to Uttar Pradesh first and Karnataka later, according to the police. On Tuesday, the police could trace the man's location to Badlapur, and a team comprising two assistant police inspectors and three to four constables reached there. At around 10 pm, the man closed the door of his house from inside, threatening to kill himself. Although the police tried to console him, he allegedly attempted suicide. The police then broke open the door and rushed him to the hospital, said an officer who was part of the investigation.

Charity Chaos: Harry Breaks Silence After Sentebale Investigation Ends Prince Harry has broken his silence following the UK Charity Commission's investigation into Sentebale, the African charity he co-founded. While the Commission cleared him of any wrongdoing, finding no evidence of racism, bullying, or misogyny, Harry says the reputational damage is already done, and it's the vulnerable children who will suffer. Tensions within the organisation reportedly began after internal clashes with current chair Dr Sophie Chandauka. By March 2025, Harry and the entire board resigned, claiming they could no longer work with her. His team alleges she refused to step down and instead sued to retain her position. Though the final report blamed no one, it sharply criticised Sentebale's leadership for mishandling internal disputes. 266 views | 1 day ago
