UPI powers half of world's real-time transactions, says PM Modi
Prime Minister Modi announced on Independence Day that India's UPI handles 50% of global real-time transactions, calling it a 'wonder'. With 1,947 crore transactions processed in July 2025 alone, UPI is now operational in seven countries, including France, marking its European debut.
Agencies Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) now accounts for 50 per cent of all real-time transactions globally. Speaking from the Red Fort on the 79th Independence Day, he said, 'Our UPI platform feels like a wonder to the world today… we have the capability (to become self-reliant).' Launched in 2016, UPI has grown rapidly in both transaction volume and value. In FY25, it recorded 18,587 crore transactions worth ₹261 lakh crore. In July 2025 alone, it processed 1,947 crore transactions. UPI is currently operational in seven countries — the UAE, Singapore, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, France, and Mauritius. Its entry into France marks its first presence in Europe, enabling Indians there to make payments without the usual challenges of foreign transactions.
UPI is operated by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), an initiative of the Reserve Bank of India and the Indian Banks' Association, which manages retail payments and settlement systems in the country.
In his address, Modi also spoke about the PM Mudra Yojana, saying crores of people have benefited by starting small businesses. 'Through their small enterprises, they have been able to create jobs,' he said. The scheme offers collateral-free loans of up to ₹20 lakh through Member Lending Institutions to micro and small business units across manufacturing, trading, services, and allied agricultural activities.

Nitish announces special packages for investors
Patna: CM Nitish Kumar on Saturday announced a four-point economic package aimed at encouraging entrepreneurs to set up industries in Bihar. Alongside this industrial push, he reiterated his govt's target of providing jobs and work opportunities to one crore young people through govt recruitment, private sector employment and self-employment initiatives over the next five years. The economic package, he said, would specifically benefit investors willing to establish industrial units in the state, supplemented by a range of existing incentives. The announcement was made on the CM's social media handle. Detailing the package, Nitish said, "The four-pronged economic package includes capital subsidy, interest subsidy and the doubling of the incentive money payable under the goods and services tax (GST). The arrangements would be made to provide land to the investors in every district, and the land would be given free of cost to them who will give more jobs." "If there is any dispute on the land allotted for establishing an industrial unit, it would be resolved. All these facilities would be given to those who establish industrial units in the next six months. Several other provisions besides these have also been made, which would be quite helpful for the investors and detailed notifications would be made separately," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? The govt has been incentivising those interested in establishing industrial units, or deciding to work on self-employment, by providing them various kinds of facilities. Now, the govt will give a special economic package to entrepreneurs to open and establish industries in the state," he added. Explaining the larger objective, the CM said, "The aim of the govt behind making these initiatives is to promote setting up of more industries in the state and to see that youths acquire skills to become self-dependent and also get jobs for their better future." The announcement came a day after his Independence Day address at Gandhi Maidan in Patna, where he had reaffirmed his government's decision — already approved by the cabinet — to provide jobs and work opportunities to one crore youths between 2025 and 2030. Passenger cars & two-wheelers could get cheaper under next-gen GST reform
Passenger cars and two-wheelers could get more affordable come this Diwali, as the government plans to lower rates and simplify the Goods and Services Tax (GST) by October. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the plan during his speech at India's 79th Independence Day celebrations. The move aims to boost domestic demand across multiple categories, and could lead to lower prices for mass-market vehicles. The government plans to simplify the GST slabs into two broader categories - Standard and Merit - 5 and 18 per cent - under the next-generation GST reforms, which could lead to lower prices for cars and two-wheelers. Government Looking To Simplify GST Brackets The government presently levies 5, 12, 18, and 28 per cent tax on most goods and services, and the government plans to simplify this into two broader categories - Standard and Merit - 5 and 18 per cent - under the next-generation GST reforms. Cars and two-wheelers are currently taxed at 28 per cent, which could be brought down to 18 per cent. This should translate to savings of up to 5-10 per cent for the customer, thanks to the reduction. The lower GST slab should make entry-level two-wheelers more accessible, providing a big boost to sales Mass-Market Cars & Two-Wheelers Could Get More Affordable The move should particularly help boost sales in the mass-market segments, particularly entry-level two-wheelers and subcompact cars under ₹10 lakh. Moreover, the move will also help reduce prices on automotive components, which in turn will help make manufacturing more reasonable for auto players. Auto spares should also benefit from the GST reduction, resulting in a lower vehicle running cost for customers. The GST reduction for entry-level two-wheelers has been a long-awaited demand from manufacturers. That said, electric vehicles are likely to continue to be placed in the 5 per cent tax slab. Meanwhile, the new GST regime could continue with the existing tax structure for luxury cars. Moreover, the government is likely to continue to apply the compensation cess on passenger vehicles. On the other hand, the recommendation suggests having a 40 per cent tax rate on luxury and sin goods, extending to seven items, including tobacco. The Indian auto component industry will benefit from the lower GST slab, in the wake of the new US tariff regime GST Revamp To Help Ease of Doing Business, Boost Demand The GST revamp also aims to help ease of doing business, and aims to boost trade for the MSME (Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises), in the wake of the higher tariffs levied by the US. The move should help boost the economy as a whole, as more and more goods will become more accessible for the masses. The reduction in taxes will also help reduce prices for home appliances and other electronic items. The Finance Ministry said the GST Council is expected to discuss the GoM recommendations in the upcoming meeting, aiming for a swift implementation. 'Every effort will be made to facilitate early implementation so that the intended benefits are substantially realised within the current financial year," the ministry added further. The new taxation norms could be rolled out by Diwali this year, hinting at a revision in prices around the end of October or November. Check out Upcoming Cars in India 2025, Best SUVs in India.
