Who will win the Auburn Regional? D1Baseball weighs in
Auburn baseball's postseason journey gets underway on Friday evening when it faces Central Connecticut at 6 p.m. CT at Plainsman Park in Auburn. The Tigers are gearing up to host its third regional in four years, and will look to advance to the Super Regionals for the fourth time since 2018.
Will they get the job done? D1Baseball dropped its predictions for each regional on Friday, including their picks for the Auburn Regional. According to D1Baseball's picks, Auburn has an 81% chance to emerge victorious in its regional this weekend. Nine members of D1Baseball's staff including Kendall Rogers and Mark Etheridge forecasted Auburn to win, with two members, Aaron Fitt and Bradley Smart, picking NC State.
Central Connecticut, Stetson, and NC State will each provide its own set of challenges for Auburn this weekend, but NC State's greatest quality will be its pitching. In its preview of the Auburn Regional, D1Baseball named NC State's starting rotation the best in the regional, with Dom Fritton being the most dominant pitcher in the staff with 102 strikeouts through 83 1/3 innings. The Tigers would miss Fritton should Auburn and NC State win its Friday games, as he is scheduled to pitch against Stetson in game one on Friday. Auburn would most likely face Ryan Marohn on Saturday, who boasts a team-low 3.72 ERA with 81 punchouts.
How will Auburn combat the Wolfpack's elite pitching staff? In terms of offense and defense, the Tigers have the edge. D1Baseball gave Auburn the title of best offensive and defensive team in the regional. Offensively, five players are hitting above .300, three players have double-digit home run totals, and eight players have 30-or-more RBI. Defensively, D1Baseball highlights the sneaky good team Auburn has in the field.
Though it's not necessarily a team you think of when you think about electric defensive players, Auburn is the best defensive team in this regional, as it has a .982 fielding percentage and no player on the roster with more than eight errors on the season. They might not be the team that turns in the most acrobatic play during the weekend, but they're the team most likely to make every single routine play.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Josh Bell homered and drove in two runs, rookie reliever Cole Henry pitched out of a jam in the sixth inning and the Washington Nationals held on to beat the Mets 5-4 on Wednesday night, ending New York's three-game winning streak. Bell's 16th homer was a 420-foot line drive to the right-field stands in the fifth against the struggling Kodai Senga (7-5), who allowed five funs (four earned) in five-plus innings. Rookie Brad Lord (4-6) pitched five sharp innings for the Nationals before losing his command in the sixth. He walked the first two batters, then gave up back-to-back one-out doubles to Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil that got the Mets within 5-4. Henry came in and worked around a throwing error by third baseman Paul DeJong, retiring Cedric Mullins on a popup and Luis Torrens on a grounder to strand the bases loaded. Shinnosuke Ogasawara pitched a perfect seventh, Clayton Beeter did the same in the eighth and Jose A. Ferrer worked the ninth for his third save. The Nationals loaded the bases in the third on two walks and a catcher's interference. Their first hit of the night was an RBI infield single by CJ Abrams, and Bell followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. Key stat Senga has allowed 18 earned runs over 27 innings in his past six starts for a 6.00 ERA. Up next In a matchup of lefties, Sean Manaea (1-1, 4.78 ERA) starts for the Mets against the Nationals' MacKenzie Gore (5-12, 4.04) as the series concludes on Thursday. ___

Latest injury offers one of these Cowboys a roster spot to begin 2025 season
The battle at wide receiver was always supposed to be a tight one for the Dallas Cowboys. With Jalen Tolbert, Jonathan Mingo, Jalen Brooks, Ryan Flournoy, Traeshon Holden and Jalen Cropper all competing for two or three roster spots, multiple players were sure to be caught on the wrong side of the roster bubble. The Cowboys are tasked with weighing WR ability, special teams' ability, and potential down the road in order to make their final determination. 53-man roster predictions have been rampant around the Cowboys blogosphere with a multitude of possible options in play. When Jonathan Mingo fell to injury in Saturday's preseason loss to the Baltimore Ravens, it threw a wrench in those projections. Most prognosticators had Mingo firmly on the roster, not only for his draft status but also for his elevated play this summer. Mingo brings size, speed and blocking ability to the WR position and was in the conversation to take snaps at WR3 in 2025. One sprained PCL later, Mingo now finds himself on a collision course for IR (injured reserve). The severity of the injury isn't a season ender, but it should keep him out of commission upwards of four weeks. After being placed on IR, the Cowboys can return him from that IR list after four weeks. His temporary absence seemingly opens the door for a different WR hopeful who would have otherwise been cut. Tantalizing prospects such as Flournoy and Holden have been seen as bubble players who stand to gain the most by this opportunity. Flournoy is a raw developmental prospect with high upside but a ways to go before he can be a reliable contributor. Holden is a surprise UDFA rookie who's been turning heads all camp. How he stacks up as a special teams player might have been the determining factor for the former Oregon Duck. But with Mingo cracking the door of opportunity, the 6-foot-3, 205-pound Holden might have just secured his place on the final 53. How it all shakes out remains to be seen but Mingo's temporary placement on IR seemingly grants a four-week trial for one WR hopeful this season. Injuries are never ideal but in the big picture there certainly is an upside for some lucky prospect. Texas A&M starting QB named to the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award watch list
Texas A&M's quarterback room will now be led by redshirt sophomore Marcel Reed, who, outside of the secondary needing to improve, has been the primary question mark from those of us who cover the program, combined with national analysts. However, it's hard to judge Reed off of a relatively small body of work after trading for Conner Weigman last season, who has since transferred to Houston. Reed finished the season with 1,864 yards and 15 touchdowns, paired with 547 yards and seven scores on the ground. This summer, the Tennessee native geared his offseason training towards refining his passing, especially his release time and deep ball accuracy, which, if improved, will finally take Texas A&M's passing game to the next level. With the additions of KC Concepcion and Mario Craver from the transfer portal, the Aggies' separation issues should be solved based on both players' elite quickness and route-running prowess. Still, it's also on Reed to hit tight windows and play with confidence. Entering the final week of preseason play, Reed reportedly played well during the program's lone scrimmage and has already developed a rapport with his receiving corps. This week, Reed was named to the annual Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award watch list, which has yet again proven that the national media has much more belief in his skill set heading into the 2025 season. No. 19 Texas A&M will open the 2025 season against UTSA on Saturday, August 30. The game will air at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN.
