Hannah Thomas hits out at ‘cowardly' cops after injury during protest arrest
Hannah Thomas, formerly a Greens candidate in Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's seat of Grayndler, participated at a protest outside SEC Plating in Belmore on June 27.
Protesters alleged the company participated in the production of weapons components used by the Israel Defence Forces.
The company has strongly denied the claims.
Ms Thomas was arrested by NSW Police at the protest last month, and suffered an eye injury so severe she fears she may lose her vision.
The former Greens candidate has issued a strong message to police at a protest in Sydney's Hyde Park on Sunday afternoon.
'You can send your cowardly police … and we still will not be afraid of you,' Ms Thomas said.
'I'd rather look in the mirror every day and see someone with one eye and a disfigured face than someone with no soul.'
She addressed the crowd for about 10 minutes, wearing dark sunglasses and standing in front of both a Palestinian and a Lebanese flag.
'So to Albanse and to (Chris) Minns, we don't owe you respect, we do not owe you decorum, we owe the people of Gaza our resistance.
'...We won't stop.
'You should be afraid of our movement, because we are not afraid of you.'
Ms Thomas has already had surgery to recover from the injury to her eye, however she last week told 10 News+ she will have at least one more surgery.
'Even if I don't lose the eye, I don't know how much vision I'm getting back,' Ms Thomas told the program.
'I won't know for some months because I'll have at least one more surgery.'
She was subsequently charged with hindering or resisting arrest and two counts of refusing to comply with all directions to disperse.
NSW Police have since withdrawn a charge related to the rarely used emergency anti-protest powers introduced after the 2005 Cronulla riots.
Ms Thomas entered pleas of not guilty to all three charges.
NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Brett McFadden earlier said he had viewed the video of Ms Thomas' arrest, and saw no evidence of misconduct by the officers.
However, a critical incident was declared and the matter will be investigated by an independent police watchdog.
At the federal election Ms Thomas received 25.1 per cent of the first preference votes, but was roundly defeated by the Prime Minister who took 53.5 per cent of first preferences.
Since the defeat Ms Thomas has been employed as a media officer for the Greens.
She recently told 10 News that the injury had affected her vision, and she could no long look at a screen for 'too long'.
'I don't know what happens with my career because of this injury.'

The man responsible for a brutal stabbing murder at Canberra's zoo in December 2023 has pleaded guilty in the ACT Supreme Court today. Warning: This story contains graphic details. Jude Widjesinghe, 31, was to have faced trial later this year on a single charge of murder, after Tshewang Choden was stabbed to death in a storeroom in the kitchen area where they both worked. Court documents have revealed the dramatic moment when staff found Widjesinghe covered in blood, sitting in the storeroom. They'd come running when they heard screams but at first were unable to get into the storeroom. Widjesinghe then came out holding the knife, as the other staff fled. By the time more people arrived Widjesinghe was on the ground having injured himself. He was disarmed when a co-worker stood on his wrist to make him drop the knife. Ms Choden was found in the storeroom. She had been stabbed 14 times, with the fatal blows to the neck and chest. Court materials reveal Widjesinghe had worked in the kitchen for a year-and-a-half where he met Ms Choden. In June 2023, Widjesinghe sent Ms Choden a message saying she had the "prettiest name in the world". But when he asked her out for dinner when they were both free she declined. When Ms Choden began dating someone else, she told others that Widjesinghe began to be moody towards her and if other males spoke to her he would get mad and stop talking to her. The pair had worked together on the same shift, but by the time of the murder Ms Choden was doing morning shifts, with Widjesinghe working later. On the day of the murder Widjesinghe and Ms Choden were in the kitchen with another colleague who left soon afterwards. It was shortly after this that workers nearby heard the first screams, and went running to see what was happening. The court documents show in the lead up to the murder Widjesinghe began telling people he was moving back to Sri Lanka, even selling his car. He also wrote letters to friends and relations and sent text messages to say goodbye. Widjesinghe was rushed to hospital after the incident, where he was later charged with murder. He was to have faced trial later this year, but today that was set aside as he pleaded guilty. Widjesinghe will face a sentencing hearing in October.

Woman charged with alleged bomb hoaxes at Brisbane school, childcare centre
A woman has been charged after allegedly making bomb threats at a childcare centre and a high school in Brisbane's south. Police allege the woman sent threatening messages to a childcare centre in Redland Bay and a high school at Runcorn between July 24 and July 25. A 50-year-old Cleveland woman was last week arrested and charged with two counts of making a bomb hoax - falsely inform a bomb present. 'Police investigations have concluded that the alleged threats were unsubstantiated, and that there was no risk to any children or the community,' a statement from the Queensland Police Service read. It is alleged the woman was not known to or connected with the school or the childcare. The woman has been remanded in custody and expected to appear before Cleveland Magistrates Court on Monday.
