Five savvy tips to slash the cost of travel on your next holiday – from apps to schemes

TELLY'S Race Across The World teams speed between checkpoints using the cheapest and fastest travel routes.
But you don't need to be haring around in the latest BBC series to want to save money.
Travel cheaply by doing your homework and, unlike the tech-free contestants, using websites and apps.
TOLL ORDERS: Motorway fees apply in Spain, Italy and France, while Belgium and Germany are largely toll-free.
France's toll roads can cost you up to £110 if you travel from Calais to the Spanish border. To cut costs, use Google maps and click the 'avoid tolls' button. If sticking to fast roads, search for the cheapest options at tollguru.com.
CITY SAVERS: Work out how to use public transport in a new city using the 'get me somewhere' function on the Citymapper app. To avoid extra charges, switch off mobile data and plan your route when you have access to wifi.
COMMUTE FOR LESS: Family travel expert Natalie Smith (@frugal_mum_uk) takes the train from the suburbs when visiting big cities.
She says: 'It's cheaper than parking, and less stressful. When we visited Rome, we got a 24-hour travel pass and travelled in from a town called Vitinia — seven Euros for adults, free for kids under 11.'
TICKET TO RIDE: Travelling by train is an adventure in a different country, but you need to know how to get the best value fares.
Research where you're going, looking for special explorer tickets and family passes.
In Italy and Spain, use local services instead of fast intercity routes.
You can compare routes at Rail Europe and Trainline, though watch for booking fees.
LOCAL SCHEMES: Natalie says she's been able to save more by getting free or discounted travel deals through tourist schemes in Austria, Germany and Switzerland.
Always ask at the tourist office or your accommodation for local travel tips.
All prices on page correct at time of going to press. Deals and offers subject to availability.

'I flew to Ibiza for a night out and it was cheaper than staying in the UK'
Savannah, 22, says she spent less on flights, clubs and drinks in Ibiza than she would have spent on a night out at home A woman flew to Ibiza and soent the night in a club for less than she would have spent on a night out at home. Savannah Southward, 22, booked some cheap flights to spend 17 hours dancing and soaking up the Spanish sun. Savannah and her pal Leighton Speak spent just £45 on their Ryanair tickets from Manchester Airport. The duo landed in Ibiza at around 10pm before heading to DJ duo CamelPhat's opening party at nightclub Pacha. The salon owner arrived around midnight and partied until 6am, before the pair headed to the beach. They sunbathed their hangovers away and topped up their tans before heading back to the UK. She spent £40 at the club and £15 on spending money so in total the trip costs her £100. 'Even though Ibiza is an expensive place I didn't spend more than I would on a night in the UK,' said Savannah, of Wigton, near Carlisle, Cumbria. 'I think a lot of people do day trips abroad because there's always cheap flights and sometimes you spend less than you would in the UK. I would absolutely pick Ibiza nightlife over the UK, it's always so busy with so many options of clubs and music. 'We landed about 10pm and had some pre-drinks before we went to CamelPhat's opening party at Pacha. It opened at 11pm but we got there for about 12:30am and stayed until 6am. 'We then waited on the beach until it was time to go back to the airport about 12pm. We didn't go to sleep but we were definitely ready for a nap when we got on the plane. The whole night went so fast we didn't even have time to think about being tired. 'We both agreed it was the best night out we've ever had and now we know how easy and affordable it is we have rebooked for July.' The duo took the trip last month flying out on 20 May and returning the next day.

British gran complains that there are too many 'Spaniards' on Benidorm holiday
A British grandmother has said her 'dream' holiday to Benidorm was ruined by 'rude' Spanish hotel guests. Freda Jackson, from Blackburn, Lancashire, was unimpressed by her stay at the Hotel Poseidon Playa, which she said had laid on no entertainment for foreign guests. The grandmother-of-six said her trip was a 'disaster from start to finish' after the Spaniards 'really got on our nerves'. She added she was nearly sent flying after being knocked over by one holidaymaker without even an apology. Freda, who is in her eighties and has mobility issues, was suggested the hotel on the outskirts of the Spanish resort by Thomas Cook. The pair booked the trip through a package operator in 2017 and funded the break over 12 months from their pensions. Benidorm, located in the Valencian Community on the Costa Blanca, typically welcomes more than 2.7 million visitors a year to its picturesque beaches. However, Freda found her hotel primarily catered for domestic tourists rather than overseas travellers, while denying she was making derogatory comments about Spaniards. The hotel also originally allocated the pair a room on the 14th floor. After explaining their accessibility issues, they were given a room on the second floor, which was still 42 steps from the swimming pool. She told the Daily Record: 'The entertainment in the hotel was all focused and catered for the Spanish – why can't the Spanish go somewhere else for their holidays?' The retired care assistant is demanding either a refund for her 'mis-sold' getaway or a free trip after shelling out £1,133 for the two-week holiday. More Trending Thomas Cook offered Freda and her friend a £75 voucher to cover their grievances. A spokesperson for the firm also clarified that, due to a system error, the duo were not made aware of a change to their flights until six days before they were due to leave. They said: 'We are very sorry for the inconvenience this caused and are investigating to make sure it doesn't happen again. 'We have offered Ms Jackson and her travel companion a gesture of goodwill to try and put things right, which we hope she will accept.' Michelle Keegan stuns in three summer dresses just 12 weeks after giving birth
Michelle Keegan made sure all eyes were on her when she modelled a stunning selection of summer dresses on holiday in Marbella with her husband, Mark Wright Michelle Keegan looks sensational on her latest sun-kissed holiday, modelling a selection of dresses from her own Very collection. The Coronation Street star, 38, showed off her enviable wardrobe while posed to perfection in Marbella, where she's taken her baby daughter, Palma, three months, for her first holiday. The actress, who was joined on the jaunt by her husband, Mark Wright and his sister Jess, told fans she was "obsessed" with her new summer dresses, particularly a floor-length brown frock with gold shell detail. Captioning a snap of herself in the dress while posing under the Spanish sun at the swanky £300-a-night SO/ Sotogrande Spa & Golf Resort Hotel, she mused: "One of my fave dresses from this collection, so simple but yet so effective. I'm obsessed with the gold shell detail." Also making its debut for the collection was a buttery yellow crocheted strapless dress, which set Michelle's tan off a treat. Then, there was a stunning off-white, tasselled off-the-shoulder number, which looked like a dress, but was actually a top and a skirt, as Michelle explained: "This colour is a WOW! And the asymmetrical hemline is really flattering. (It's a skirt and top so you have to buy separate ladies) Oh, and it's currently in the SALE!" Fans couldn't get enough of Michelle - and her wardrobe- as many flocked to Instagram, praising the actress for how good she looked. One gushed: 'How does anyone look that amazing after just having a baby?', while another joked: 'You look absolutely stunning…I am still trying to get my post-baby figure back, and my baby is 17 this year!' Michelle and Mark have jetted off to Spain for Palma's first trip abroad as they told fans it was "Princess P's first holiday". Sharing some sweet snaps of the family's first holiday, Michelle can be seen cradling her bundle of joy while another showed the mum and daughter shaded from the sun. Michelle and Mark announced their daughter's arrival three months ago, taking to Instagram with a snap of the tot's tiny hand, revealing they had a 'new love to share'. In a sweet post, holding her precious Palma, Michelle wrote: 'Together we have a new love to share… Our little girl. Palma Elizabeth Wright. 06.03.25'. Mark also spoke about his little girl on his Heart Breakfast show while chatting to his friend and fellow dad, Olly Murs. Recalling the moment he first held his daughter, he also praised his wife for being a 'superhero'. He said: 'It's the biggest achievement of my life it's all I think about but obviously, hats go off to my wife she is an absolute superhuman, a superhero for bringing this baby into the world '. He continued: 'That moment when I held her in my arms, it gets me emotional now thinking about it... I suppose everything else goes out the window, and it's made me realise what life is all about, and my little baby Palma, I love you so much and I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you."
